Well it allows adepts to purchase 2 additional power points but not magic points, 2 power points costs 20 magic points, I'd hazard a guess 1 magic points costs 1 bp. Now if my bad memory serves me the only way to increase power points for an adept is increasing his magic skill and the only way to do that is initation. (I could of course be totaly wrong ) |
It's the core rule for adepts found in the SRC sourcebook, whereas initiation is an extended rule. Basically if you're not using the rules for initation which normally supercede these rules
(edit: and apparently we are, so this is pretty moot), you're allowed to blow 20 Karma in order to gain 1 Power Point worth of powers. You're still limited to the maximum rank in any one power based upon your Magic Rating, but you can have more than your Magic Rating in powers.
But at 20 Karma, which means 20 Spell Points, and with each Spell Point costing 25,000 nuyen... well, I don't know what the designers were smoking here. Everyone else gets a bunch of freebies while adepts seem to get screwed. Go figure.

Oct 21 2004, 06:32 PM
Okay so does that mean that they can initiate twice and thereby gain metaphysical abilities ie Centering etc. Gain up to 2 points in magic skill
IE have 8 magic, and then the relevant points (this would apply for normal mages shamans as well but then would mages/shamans then have to buy additional points ontop of that to purchase additional spells, or would they recieve free points based on them having 8 magic?
Or would you simply have 8 magic, but not be initiated
Or would you have 6 magic but 2 additional power points as a adept. Mages would simply purchase additional points to spend on more spells.
Nikoli
Oct 21 2004, 06:33 PM
That's because while most sammies are limited to the safe level of 6 essence (delta ware and cyberzombiedom not withsatnding)
a phys ad is only limited by karma
To explain the phys ad initiation and power points thing:
Char-gen power points= magic attribute
raise magic attribute through initiation grants addition power point
purchase addition power points through 20 karma per
Max power rating = magic rating (or related skill rating if IA)
Max power points = no limit

If you bought two points using those rules and assuming no Magic loss, you would have Magic 6 and a total of 8 points of adept powers, none of which could have a rating higher than 6.

Nikoli: I just PMed you with a quick background summary of the character I'm considering. When you get the chance, can you give it a once-over and lemme know if he sounds promising or not? Thanks.

Just rememberd another House Rule:
Eye Camera and Opticam as normal except as follows:
Reduce essence and cost by 50%
IMO when SR1 was written, cameras were huge by today's standards, I see no reason why they would not continue to micronize.

High power works for me, and I prefer point buy. Hmm...still not sure what sort of char to make. Thinking either a shaman or a decker. Can we get a list of what everyone is planning in one post?

Okay, as far as the current character declarations go, here's what I have jotted down for the players Nikoli has officially accepted thus far as best as I can tell:
Dr. Funkenstein: Adept Muscle, Satyr Male, Underworld/Entertainment Background
Johnson: B&E Specialist, Unknown Race, Unknown Background
Kremlin KOA: Rigger, Unknown Race, Unknown Background
Nine-9: Face-Sorcerer with a touch of Sniper, Unknown Race, Unknown Background
Tashio: Tactical/Combat Specialist, Humnum who Carries the Family Jewels, Corp/Military Background
Whizbang: UndeclaredFeel free to correct me.
EDIT: Corrected Tashio's entry.
Tashio
Oct 21 2004, 10:18 PM
Humnum, not adept. Gender of the type known to carry the family jewels.
Well technicaly it was Hum-num or Hum-nam, been to long. Don't feel like digging around and seeing if it will work under 2k. And the version they busy redoing is a leetle big to download in 2 min.

Computer, initiate universal translation. <pause> What do you mean there's only a 82.6% chance he meant "human?" <kicks the computer before wandering off to edit the last post>
Looks like a decker or a full-blown magician would be the most complimentary type of character.

Now that the specifics are decided by democratic process:
Location: Seattle Metroplex
Date at game start: March 5th, 2064
Team was originally a "Deniable Asset" for an executive who got caught up in her own machinations. In order to maintain the image of the company, she was "terminated" from service. As a result of this, her files came under scrutiny and the team was released under good faith, though access to other company assets has been revoked. Not wishing to lose the synergy built up over the last 2 years, you approached a Fixer as a pre-assembled team for hire and have been working with them for the last 2 months.
You have a good reputation as a team and as professionals.

Any other house rules we need to be aware of?
Nikoli
Oct 22 2004, 12:01 AM

Astral Perception: check
Sniping: check
Cyber cameras: check
can't think of anything, though please limit initiation to 2nd grade.

Hum-nams is what the Spathi called Humans in StarControl 2.

Oct 22 2004, 11:30 AM
ok, started building the character (for clarification he's human, totem of the lover (!) , still working on background)
Just for total clarification Nikoli, can I spend 250k nuyen to buy enough spell points to initiate, in the pocess gaining a metamagic technique and a point of magic? (likely to use that point to offset some minor cyberware)
Interesting looking team, nice concepts all round

Oct 22 2004, 12:34 PM

You can initiate up to grade 2. However I need to know all the details of the initiation, is it self, group, strictures, ordeals, etc.

All right, here's what I have as of now. Feel free to correct/update me.
Dr. Funkenstein: Adept Muscle, Satyr Male, Underworld/Entertainment Background
Johnson: B&E Specialist, Unknown Race, Unknown Background
Kremlin KOA: Rigger, Dwarf Male, Corporate Background
Nine-9: Face-Lover Sorcerer with a touch of Sniper, Human Male, Unknown Background
Tashio: Tactical/Combat Specialist, Human Male, Corp/Military Background
Whizbang: Racoon Shaman-Decker, Unknown Race, Unknown Background
One question that's been asked (by Tashio) but hasn't been answered: Are characters allowed to have cyberware above alpha-grade?
Nikoli
Oct 22 2004, 02:18 PM
Yes, beta grade, is available, but only within the availability limits.
as is cultured bioware
Also, the Corp Sponsor was Wuxing (Seattle), your now deceased sponsor was Roxanne Jergen.
Okay, I see the problem.
Soycaf tossed ni a hat After the casting call was closed.
I was (*gasp*) confused for a sec because Soykaf and I are also trying to get into another game and have been chatting.
So, as I don't like to disappoint folks, but I also want to be fair to those that were not chosen but submitted interest in the alloted time.
I have to ask Soy to please back out.
I do apologize for dashing your hopes, but it is the fair thing to do.

Awesome -- I love dwarves.
I can be found on AIM under the auspicious name of

Also, as I've already said this to one person, I'll make it 'official':
I personally don't care for the Martial Arts Techniques in the CC.
However, if you want spiffy RP stuff and properly ham it up, good things are known to come your way.

Oct 22 2004, 03:21 PM
Unfortunately I wont be ableto send the character until monday... very busy weekend unfortunately, but will be good to go tuesday.
Nikoli, I need to know the cost for self initiation, no ordeal, only the one level thanks
EDIT: oh, I tried messing with dat files in NSRCG to allow me to use it to create the character, but you cant seem to alter things such as max starting attribute levels, the amount of resources you get for your points and the skill cap of 6 for starting characters, what am I missing here, anyone know?
Nikoli
Oct 22 2004, 03:35 PM
Might want to hit McMackie on his thread for the proggy to get that answered. I was under the assumption that all things were editable in that program
Nikoli
Oct 22 2004, 03:44 PM
Also, I don't need a huge background.
All i need as the Gm is an idea of your character's moral fibre. I need something to let me know when you are roleplaying well and when things are against your character's grain.
I need to know how your character feels about the loss of the team sponsor, etc.
I don't need to know that you were the second tomato in your day-care recital of "Farms: the lost and forgotten"

9-9...you have AIM, or other messengers? We probably should compare notes on spells to avoid too much overlap. If you don't like giving it out on forums, my contact info is in my profile.

What you might do Nine-9, is finalize your character and give yourself the Karma you need to raise your stats. And you can grant an existing character whatever amount of money you want.
The only thing you would then need to alter would be your Karma pool stat which you can change in the html/xml sheet that you send to Nikoli.
I tend to edit the HTML to reorganize the gear section of the NSRCG sheets because I like to sort things in a different manner anyway. Should work with Karma too.
Just a thought.
EDIT: There's a check-box in the options to allow existing characters to raise their attributes over racial max. That's why spending Karma could make this workable...

I don't want to make you drive all the way over here to help me with my character, Nikoli. I appreciate it, but even if it is 20 minutes away I'll pass on this game, maybe another one. (Besides, my weekend as it stands now is.... Party Friday[today], spend the night until Saturday. Then on Saturday I go over to my other friend's house and role-play "Werewolf: the Apocalypse" until 12 AM. Sunday I'm writing a paper on "A Clockwork Orange," It is totally booked.)
Tashio
Oct 22 2004, 09:54 PM
Or do what I did and simply turned rules off right in the begining, track your spending manualy and make sure you don't overun anything. I basicaly want it for the char sheet at the end of the day for ease of sending to GM. I usualy do a paper char sheet if I want copy for myself.
Ol' Scratch
Oct 22 2004, 09:59 PM
Or do what real men do, learn the rules and craft your character with love and affection. Okay, maybe real men wouldn't do that. Hmm, err, yeah. Don't mind me.

Oct 23 2004, 11:47 AM
good ideas everyone, thanks.
Whizbang, unfortunately im on dial up connection, so no messenger type progs at the moment. To give you an idea though, I'm probably going for a "buffer" type mage with the ability to assist other team members, rather than direct damage...
Some ideas for spells Im goig to take
imp invisibility
levitate
physical mask
combat sense
various detection spells
probably stunbolt and spiritbolt
some kind of increased initiative to be bound to a focus
healthy glow
the totem gives bonuses to detection and illusion, so thats where the majority of the spell points are going.
If you get the time, put up your own list once you have an idea?
Ol' Scratch
Oct 23 2004, 12:12 PM
With the way Nikoli is going with Invisibility, one of you might want to consider taking that in addition to/instead of Improved Invisibility. Might come in handy on occasion.
Nine-9
Oct 23 2004, 01:42 PM
point well taken, I'll add it to the list...
actually, I really like that houserule, makes vanilla invisibility actually useful again. Be prepared to have this idea stolen if I ever run a game.
