People are asking for one game better than Halo.
Many have listed mutliples, and often times we see the same list.

But there's one game that simply stands alone in the crowd out there as purely one of the most creative and fun FPS's made.

Perfect Dark.

Whilst still twitchy, it's more cerebral than (say) Quake deathmatch.

I very much disagree. Quake is all about controlling the level. I'm a mediocre shot, but I'm a fairly good Quake player because unless my opponent is quite good, I will regularly have all the armor and extra health on the level. The strategic and tactical possibilities of Quake are often woefully overlooked.

Kage that is not styrategy and tactics that is memorizing where the goodies are. In CStrike I have seen teams of mediocre players wipe the floor with teams of quake kings because they used S4 teamwork. It was very fun to watch
Kagetenshi
No, that is strategy and tactics. Knowing where the goodies are, yes, but then actually getting them out from under other players who also know where the goodies are?

Well for actual strategy and tactics I think America's Army is the best game ever. (www.americasarmy.com)

I like it precisely because the pace is slow and it's relatively realistic. There are basically no pickups or powerups (although you can get a medic to stop your bleeding, or you can pick up the SAW if the automatic rifleman dies or drops it), you can use iron sights with breathing, and you can actually bleed to death.

IMHO, that completely pwns every other FPS for that reason, and in fact I wish that there was a set of America's Army singleplayer levels just so I could revel in the engine.
Austere Emancipator
I agree, America's Army is absolutely marvellous for playing out modern infantry warfare from the view-point of a single infantry squad. I absolutely would not want a game like that for SR, though -- SR is not about ultra-realistic modern infantry warfare.

And, as much as I've thought about single-player America's Army, I'm kinda glad it doesn't exist. AI would completely fuck it up and the scenarios would have to be extremely short so that the fact that your character can die instantly without warning at any time does not make it too frustrating.

I completely agree, and it would have made my list if it wasn't for the game's technical issues. That game was too ambitios for the console it was released on...

The basis was phenominal. I loved the weapons, multiplayer kicked ass, but the chop and slowdown ruined it for me =(

Add to my list

NOLF
NOLF2
SHOGO

...
Ultimately I'd like to see a Shadowrun game take the Syndicate/Syndicte Wars/Xcom approach to a game.

What I want to see is the combat played out turn based, then when the combat is over the combat can be instant replayed in real time with a movable camera cinematically. That way you have the strategy of the fight ala xcom and Fallout, but the coolness of seeing the super fast fight play out as a cinematic.
Crusher Bob
If you are interested in turn based combat, you can take a look at Silent Storm, though availability in the US is apparently spotty.
Wounded Ronin
I have both NOLF 1 and 2. While I respect NOLF 1 for greater cultural purity, the game play is horrible compared to NOLF 2. It's like they tried to screw you over by putting all the near-duplicate pistols on your quickdraw list while putting the actual useful and different items like the exploding lipstick deep down in your toggle menu.

I actually have Shogo, but I can't run it. Probably because my DirectX is too recent. Shame.

Kagetenshi
Ew, DirectX…

~J
BitBasher
Really?I can still run shogo on my Directx9b.

I amy be romanticising those last 3, the 2 NOLF's nad SHOGO. I really remember liking SHOGO though.
Wounded Ronin
Well when I try to run Shogo the graphics are messed up, and the starting menu is invisible. However, I have no problems with any other games, including Nolf 1 and 2 and many much more recent games. So if it's not DirectX I have no idea what the issue could be.

I know that I asked for advise on what to play instead of Halo, and thanks for the tips. But I did that mostly to try and be reasonable. I´d like to say that I play a lot of computer/video games and my deciding to like Halo is an informed decision. And its not because I´m stupid or have bad taste. It´s that I have a different perspective. I was never much into FPS before Halo. I liked some for the story and atmosphere, like Marathon and Halflife. But I was always sucked at them. I´m a console player by heart, eccept for RPG´s. Halo handles like a console game. It´s the first console FPS that really works. And it gives me a sense of complete control. I rock at Halo, like with other console games. That´s a lot more fun than sucking.
Kagetenshi
So in other words, one of the big reasons I dislike it (I completely agree, even on the computer it handles like a console game) is one of the big reasons you like it. Fair enough.

Er... Goldeneye, Perfect Dark...

And to be fair I did like HALO, It's not a bad game, in fact it's a pretty good game, it's just not a great game in the grand scheme of things IMHO. Then again, I think that consoles are a horrible place for a FPS because the control scheme is so horribly limited by the controller. A mouse and keyboard is FAR more responsive.

But hey, to each his own!

I found out the cause of my problem:

Many users with Geforce cards have been experiencing issues with the menu system and/or movies in Shogo through Version 2.2. As Monolith has dropped support on Shogo, it is up to us, the gamers, to find a solution. The following are fixes for Graphics cards that we have found and hopefully you'll be lucky enough for one of these solutions to work.

GeForce Cards

Solution Number 1 - First off we have found that most users can fix the Geforce era cards by disabling VSYNC in the cards properties and this can be accomplished by doing the following:
First get into the registry (type regedit in the Run window).
Find the extension HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/NVIDIA_Corporation/NVTweak (most have found this key already there, but if not, you'll have to create the NVTweak key)
Once the Key is created (or verified) download the VSync.reg and save it to your system somewhere.
Right click the file and choose Merge (select yes to the warning).
Now right click on the desktop and Choose Properties, Click on the Settings tab. Click the Advanced button at the bottom of the window and click the tab that says Geforce 3 or Geforce (should be the upper left most tab). At the bottom of this window select Additional Properties and then select Direct3D Settings.
Under the Direct3D Setting select the More Direct3D at the bottom, we have reached the window we want! (finally huh?)
Now there will be a drop down menu that is labeled Vertical Sync Mode (VSync), change the drop down menu to Always off
Hit OK at the very bottom and ok out of every other menu.
Load up Shogo and hopefully everything should work fine.

So last night I played through it. It's funny, because I remembered the graphics being less ugly all those years ago....

The other thing is that the gameplay isn't very good. The enemies seem designed to hesistate for a second or two before they shoot you, after which they open up on you and cause a lot of damage. The problem is that sometimes they detect you before you come around the corner and so you, like, almost automatically take damage when you see them, as there is no leaning around the corners, hand grenades, or things like that. I've probably died in this game more times than I've died in NOLF 1, NOLF 2, and Contract Jack put together. wink.gif

Also, apparently you can't reload before your magazine is empty. Grr.

I found myself at one point repeatedly getting stuck on a ladder. And the walk animations seem to be out of sync with the smooth gliding around movements of the objects.

Don't get me wrong...I'm enjoying the game. It just seems really broken by today's standards, or the standards of Doom and Marathon.

Or maybe it's just a product of graphic card incompatibility. I don't know.

Also, the dialogue sounds really funny. Too bad it keeps getting cut off for me. Oh well. That's not the game's fault, but rather the fault of the current year and hardware/software not being compatible.

But yeah, I'm still enjoying it. I plan to play it some more this evening or maybe tomorrow evening instead.

Exactly what I´ve been trying to get across all the time. End of discussion. smile.gif

They were a step in the right direction, yes. They didn´t make me feel like I never wanted to play a shooter on PC again, though.

I know this is thread digging but here it goes.

Alright here folks I heard from an unofficial source that Microsoft and Bungie Games are working on a Shadowrun game rpg/adventure. There is no verified completion date or actual pictures this is just merely a rumor. At the moment if Bungie and Microsoft are working then it can mean:

It will will be similar to Knights of the Old Republic. And have many characters and choices in terms of dialogue, storyline and character development.

It will be a Realtime combat game similar to diablo, baldurs gate or some other crappy rpg that doesn't allow for much character development other than leveling and picking the most powerful gear.

It will suck.

It will be good and they will work on an appropiate engine that can support a system that is Turn Based and has all the Shadowrun features (Full race and character choices along with actually going throught the long process of designing a character) that we have came to know and love over the years of running.

Be it as it may we do not know what they have planned for a Shadowrun rpg. Hell it might even be like the Sega version.

A rumor is a rumor in the PC gaming industry, but Bungie being the developer would be a bit of a surprise - I would have thought that FASA Interactive would be leading up dev work if it were still a existant body under the Microsoft banner. (I'm a little out of touch with the PC field these days - has FASA Inter. been dissolved recently?)

In any regards, if the rumor is true, it may very well be either a RTS/RPG (like Baldur's Gate) or a shooter of some sort. This is considering what Bungie has been putting out as of late.

I could see it fitting in rather nicely as a RTS/RPG, probably with the combat and magic system intergrated, maybe rigging (I can't see decking/the Matrix really being fitted in an initial release, though).

Now if it's a shooter, then it could go down the Halo route or the Deus Ex route (the DX route probably being the better one, but it may not be the one they pick out for the title). In either case, it'll probably have some real-time conversion of the standard rules, and may include decking; an FPS would work better than the RTS/RPG method for Matrix operations. You could have a random system generator for Matrix runs - they already have done random mission generators in FPS's before (Soldier of Fortune 2).

It'll be interesting to see if this rumor is true or not.

Considering how much work Bungie his historically put into the originality of their previous games, I'd be shocked to see them working in someone else's universe.

Yeah well FASA is still around mind you, although they are not developing games like Shadowrun, Earthdawn or MechWarrior. They are making a killing off of them by licensing to other developers and companies such as Wizkids, Fanpro, etc. They did the smart thing and kept their licenses so that could rake in the big bucks so far I Imagine it is working nicely for them. FASA Inter. is still around but it carries the MS name.

As for RTS it will kill it because the way the Shadowrun combat system goes because I doubt it would be fair to your cyber-cracked-reflex-with-5d6-initiative-elf-of-death if you got turned into chunky salsa by some fool with a 2d6 initiative and a panther assault cannon. If it were an RTS it would be to unbalanced but if it were turnbased it would at least some semblance of fair.

As for Matrix/Rigging it could be possible but they would need to simplify or do what they did in SEGA version. Actually Matrix/Rigging could be done Neocron style also but then again it is up to the developers in their infinite wisdom.

As far as shooter is concerned it would be nice but I think it would fail to effectively capture all aspects of the shadowrun universe.

You might want to recheck your facts on that.

WizKids owns the intellectual property rights to Shadowrun, which they license to FanPro. WizKids is owned by Topps (the trading card dudes).

Though it's correct that FASA is still around. I'm not aware of anything that they're actually doing, however.

This would be cooler than the MMO IMO. Here's my two cents on some of the other games mentioned (and not) that it might be modeled after:

HALO - Personally, I wouldn't want to see a SR game in FPS mode. By its very name, the game should be about running the shadows, not nuking armies of enemies. If that's the case, then I would hope the game is called "Shadowrun: Desert Wars". However, I'm one of the people who actually likes pretty much everything about the HALO games (both 1 & 2). The first was a bit repetitive in the latter levels, but solid on the fun factor all the way through. 2 was just all kinds of fun and had some really innovative level design. The AI can be bad at times, however its nowhere near the worst out there. In fact, there are quite a few enemies that are unpredictable in both 1 & 2 (not including grunts). True, neither is doing anything new, but when a game stays in rotation in my box for months on end (without any swapping... 'cept for a kill fix on Manhunt), it's a good game.

Morrowind - This is the style of game that I would hope it appears in. The open-ended feeling is great. Being able to explore a richly detailed world is great. The whole "main storyline vs. do what thou wilt" element is great. Character focus and development is great. Plus, the game relies on the player being good at the physical element of combat... not just a bunch of hidden rolls for fighting, as in Final Fantasy.

Dungeon Siege/Neverwinter Nights - Either of these styles of game would be fun as well. Makes it easy to mod, which would be really cool. Has enough detail to keep one interested.

Dues EX - Ugh, I hope not. I wasn't very fond of this game. I'd rather play SR as a Splinter Cell knock-off than this type of FPS.

Freelancer - Yeah, its a space game, but its a really cool space game. I'd like to see this level of detail on the trading... er, freelancing aspect of Shadowrun. This game totally feels like a far future space Shadowrun. Anyone else like this one for the same reason?

Oh, and Crimson Skies was fun. I thought they did a good job with that, not that it has anything to do with why I'd like it as a Shadowrun game though.
Ranneko
To be honest, I enjoy the Doom series more than I did Halo.

(Yes, I like Ultimate Doom more than Halo)

But anyway, with regards to a shadowrun game, I will have to wait until more details come out before jumping to any real conclusions.

Heck if it was half way good any good I would pay/play it if it was an MMORPG like EQ.
Aku
i would also like to say not all MMoRPG's are bad, personally, ever crack wouldnt be my first choice but eh..

I would say if they make a morrowind version, they NEED to expand the skill system... i had most of my used skills maxed way early... to the point that i stopped playing it.

then again, with SR you shouldnt be able to increase your skills just by DOING them. Got that karma to spend, so that might not even be an issue.

Addendum:

Unreal Tournie - Please, gods of justice... no. I can't stand how hyper fast that game is. Mostly because some of my UT junkie friends can whip my ass a dozen times before I can figure out the play board, but also because it just looks nuts when you see about 10 toons jumping around Mario-style, firing insane amounts of ammo. Gah, that game pisses me off. Again, mostly because I'm inept at it.

I like the game, Quake-wannabe that it is, but ye gods would it be awful for Shadowrun.

Yea, a friend of a friend of mine last year said that microsoft was doing something about a shadowrun video game then. But something like 90% of games that are started are not finished, so it is still unlikely to happen.

Yea, that fof is, I think, some sort of senior game designer at ms.
Crimson Jack
I remember playing a game at my cousin's house once, not so long ago, called Killzone... I think. I bring this one up because it made amazing use of firing around, under, over and through cover. You could press up against, duck under, and hide behind almost any construct in the game. Plus, there was really cool architectural destruction in it.
Kanada Ten
I think a decent SR FPS could be made from a combo of Mercenaries and Killzone.
