I didn't like the two-pistol rules the first time I read them, but they're really growing on me.
There are distinct advantages. If you're good enough, you can potentially kill 4 people instead of 2. You can potentially add your base damage more times.
There are also distinct disadvantages, in that if you're not good enough your extra shots (and your original two shots) are much more likely to miss completely. The ones that do hit will have less successes.
The big improvement over SR3 is that a character designed to use two pistols, with max ambidexterity, was in a situation where they might as well use two pistols because they really weren't any better with just one. (smartlinks and laser sights not withstanding) In SR4, even a dual-pistol god is still a much better shot with just one.
I like that.

The Ares Predator IV is a Heavy Pistol. Under Gas-Vent System on page 311, it says that:
QUOTE | Gas-vent systems can be built into machine pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, and machine guns.

The Ares Predator isn't a machine pistols, SMGs, assault rifles, or machine guns, so can it not have a Gas-Vent System?
Or am I over thinking this.
Gas-vent systems go on the barrel mount. A Heavy Pistol has a barrel mount.
Is that good enough logic to say that the Ares Predator IV can have a Gas-Vent System?

The sidebar on P.301-302 says Pistols can accept barrel modifications. Gas-venting in listed as a "barrel" mount mod. So a Pistol *can* accept Gas-Venting.
The thead was hijacked some, I just wanted to point this out.

That would seem to exclude the use of vents on standard handguns, despite the fact that they can be barrel-mounted.
SR3's underbarrel grenade launcher mod was an Under mounted weapon, but could only be mounted on long guns, not SMGs. It's description specifically stated what it could be mounted on, similar to the gas vent description in SR4.

well the way they set it up now is if the damage code is less than the armor rating its stun damage anyways so you may as well just take out a taser and start firing |
If you're using a heavy pistol, that 1 net success you're required to get to actually hit someone puts your mod DV/AP to 6/-1... wearing anything lighter than an armored jacket (which is obviously combat gear, according to it's description) is going to result in you taking physical damage.
If you stick, say, APDS ammunition (or you could use EXEX, but I've houseruled that out of existence... same end effect in RAW for this particular example, anyway) into that handgun, the required 1 net success gives you a mod DV/AP of 6/-5... the only way you're not taking physical damage from that hit is to be wearing full body armor *and* a helmet, since you'd need 12 Ballistic to stop that shot.
Body armor that's lighter than the armored jacket feels next to useless this time around. I'm pretty annoyed.
EDIT: fixed lousy gr4mm4r.

I think maybe "built into" and "mounted on" are different things, though.

In SR3, if you got hit with a heavy pistol while naked, each body die gave you a 1/9 (9+) chance at a success to stage down damage. If you were wearing an armored jacket, that change jumped to 1/2 (4+). I'd say body armor made a pretty significant improvement in your survival rate.
This time around, the big selling point is supposed to be that the damage steps down to being stun instead of physical if the armor's heavy enough. That'd be great, except you've got to be wearing more armor than someone with Bod 3 can wear without eating penalties for it to kick in, and stun damage will take you out of a fight just as fast as physical (although obviously, it takes a lot less time to heal afterwards).
