Cases like that are ones where I DEFINITELY would not allow HoG.
20 kg of C-12...ONE kilo probably would be overkill. I don't claim to be an demolitions expert, but...
It sucks to have your awesome PC killed by a clueless teammate, but maybe you should have made sure he wasn't bringing 20 kg to the job in the first place.

There was some heated debate about that. But since no on could tell her exactly how much was needed she had to guess. She wasn't actually on the job, sort of a 3rd party specialist.

Remember, it's Shadowrun explosive quantities... 1KG does nearly nothing.

Wait, was the demo "expert" a PC? Or an NPC?
If NPC, you might need to have a little "chat" with your GM. Involving blunt objects, and possibly a few pointy ones.

i'd argue that this is exactly what HoG is for. crazier things have happened in real life.

If I've got a character doing stupid, stupid stuff that would require him to be riding on a tac nuke, getting hit with a Thor shot, or even pointing an AVS at a citymaster, I've got problems besides the system. |
A system that didn't allow for absurdity wouldn't cause the problem in the first place.

'Plausibility' is a funny thing... it's so easy to shift. When playing Primetime Adventures, it perfectly plausible that characters are not supposed nor able to simply die. |
Exactly the point. We all agree that the -52 dicepool, the ground zero tacnuke, and the orbital bovine bombardment are too absurd for any of our Shadowrun games. That the system not only allows for such things, but encourages them when the chips are down, is a sign of a problem.

If you say so, your highness.

The opinion of others may differ.

Heh, just so!
With the 'We all' comment, I was wondering just how many different personalities Cain is...
Note: I'm not defending any of the examples he gave, I haven't given my opinion either way nor intend to. But I certainly don't want anyone else speaking for me or casting my vote by proxy.

If you don't think a character surviving those situations Cain listed is absurd (With exception to the bovine bombardment, of course. I don't think that one's entirely serious

), then there's really not much point in arguing the point further. If your character can take a tac-nuke to the face, then you're playing an entirely different game than I am.

That's 'a character' - the rule is there for any PC.
Again - the rationale and result of escaping certain death by burning Edge are entirely up to the GM.
If 'taking a tac-nuke to the face' means that the PC now is a horribly mutated abomination bound by a Dream Pact with a Nuclear... so be it - it's their game.
Playing the same game as you do may not be a priority to anyone else.
