Sledge
Combat turn 4
IP 1
Sledge will roar loudly and beat her chest ala Queen of the Jungle! And point to the door.
Intimidation 4 + Cha 3 + Edge 4 = 11 (Opposed by Intiimidation + Wil)
4 = hits 1 2 5 3 6 4 1 1 5 1 1 5

Standard Parry
Rea 6 + Hammer 6 = 12
1 hit = 2 1 2 5 1 4 2 3 1 2 2 4

Body 6 (Impact armor 6)
2 hit = 3 3 5 2 2 5

IP 2
Assuming idiot ape doesn't leave... and Sledge is still on her feet. Time to apply modern technology!

Taser, as club 8S(e)
Agi 5 + Clubs 4 - Off Hand 2 = 7
4 hits (Wow) = 1 6 4 4 5 6 5

Standard Parry
Rea 6 + Hammer 6 = 12
2 hits = 1 6 4 4 4 5 1 3 3 3 1 3

Body 6 (Impact armor 6)
2 hits = 2 5 2 6 1 4

If we get to combat turn 5 with this ape... it's Hammer time!

I'll be trying to get an IC post up today for the first combat turn or so.
But don't let that stop you from posting as well.
adamu
BlackHat

Umm, I guess you'll need an initiative roll.
BlackHat
I rolled earlier and got an 8. Since I only had one IP, I said I was going to do nothing until someone got attacked. If you want me to reroll I can, though.
BlackHat
To clarify, since I am in AR my initiative doesn't change. I assume we're in the 2nd IP for the 1st round of combat? or is it a new round and I should reroll...

Probably of note is the fact that I have been using "Mr. Smith's" shitty metalink with "Edit" as the only program running. frown.gif For the third or fourth time, I need to remember to swap commlinks between "Smith" and "Adam" after this mission (or, perhaps after my metalink gets dumped from the network).
smile.gif

There isn't much I can do with an edit program in combat, so I guess this is as good a time as any to ask how you rule the defaulting rules for matrix actions... can one attempt to attack (or encrypt, or databomb, or whatever) without the program by defaulting to logic -1? or would it be computer/hacking -1 since hte program replaces the attribute in this silly subsystem? biggrin.gif Or can it not be done at all, and you just can't attack without an attack program running on your com?
adamu
DireRadiant

Dude, I sure as hell didn't expect that!

To speed things up, have rolled some dice for you -

You didn't give me an initiative, so I rolled it and the ape won.

He scored mucho hits.

I fail to see why, with Impact of 6 and Body of 6 you rolled 6 dice instead of 12. So I rolled 6 for you, and you also got mucho hits. But that is a strong monkey, and you take 3 boxes stun.

Then, what can I say? Your intimidation works. Fortune favors the bold. He growls, backs off, and turns to follow his buddies.

Go ahead and IC if you want.
Konsaki
@BlackHat
Heh, you are helping the fight by just being there though. Taking one off the hacker is cool, and all you have to do is reboot your commlink to be at full health. Rebooting should only take a few turns too.
The problem is that you wont be able to talk to Sledge or Cal during the reboot.
adamu
BlackHat

Sorry, you can keep the 8. I hadn't noticed it much since I didn't expect you to get into combat.

Your first IP of your first combat turn began when I asked for initiative. I'll get you in sync with Sledge if it starts to matter.

Reviewing the rules, you would use your cybercombat skill (or Logic -1 if you don't have that skill, since it is defaultable) + your program rating, which is 0. Of course, the damage of your attack is your program rating, so without a program you would start at 0, but net successes could count as damage.
Konsaki
I dont think that Cybercombat is a defaultable skill, or else you would just have hackers with 6Log defaulting all the time and just saying 'foo on buying skills'.
adamu
Believe me, my matrix rules are so weak I check the RAW before making a single keystroke of GM ruling. Check it yourself. Defaultable.
Konsaki
No BBB here, so I'll take your word on it, you being GM and all. biggrin.gif
BlackHat
Yeah, that was the reason I have asked. By RAW, you can default to cybercombat, and I think even hacking and computers (which usually require programs)... but the book never explains exactly how that is done... and people have postulated that a high-logic character can kick a pretty good amount of ass online through sheer-will.. .especially considering that in my case, I am using a metalink, and any programs I MIGHT have running would only be running at rating 1, anyways.

of course, the way adamu ruled it, Its JUST cybercombat... so no logic involved. Your hackers can say foo on buying programs, but they NEED skill then, and having a high logic won't help them overcome anything.

In any case, if adamu changes his mind about the ruling anytime, I'll let it go, but for the time being, to keep things rolling, I think I am going to cybercombat it up. biggrin.gif

Edit: previous post SPOILERED, to keep from clogging up the board - its irrelivent. See next post.
[ Spoiler ]
BlackHat
Been thinking about this... and I think I was totally going in the wrong direction with the defaulting rules.

Think about it... if cybercombat says "defaultable" that means you can default on cybercombat if you have no SKILL... not no PROGRAM.

So, if you ahd an attack 5 program, I imagine you could make a feeble attack with it at rating 4 (program rating -1 for defaulting)... but after more thought, I don't see any reason why you should be able to take an attack action without an attack program running.

So, to clear up my previous aciton. IF, as admin, I can command them from whatever prompt I have available to me (like, turn the server off of alert status) I will. OTHERWISE, I'll use a simple action to unload Edit (after sending the message to Sledge), and do nothing for my remaining simple action (since I have no program running I can't very well do anything at all on the matrix). biggrin.gif

Unless someone else can point me to something in the BBB saying you can do things in the matrix without programs (without being a TM). I was fairly certain there was some debate over this in the past, but after some thought, I think it was just debate over what you default to (attribute or program rating) when you lack a skill.
BlackHat
Only relevant rule I could find from work without a BBB.
On Page223. Under "Using Hacking Skill"
QUOTE
"When you are directly interacting with a device, make Hacking Tests using Hacking
skill + Logic. If you are utilizing a hacking program, makes tests using Hacking skill + program rating."

Some threas in the SR4 area have taken this to mean that you can hack without programs since it says IF, and because there are no other hacking tests that don't have associated programs.

Iffy logic, at best. Others have pointed out that no where in the rules does it say that you cannot do those things without the correct program, but I similarly think that the lack of a rule does not imply its opposite. biggrin.gif So, willing to go with it either way.

I'm hoping that without a program I can still use the built-in Admin GUI... failing that, I might fire off a bunch of random code and see if I get lucky (above spoiler'd post). Though, if in light of fact that defaulting lets you get around lack of a skill (not lack of an attribute, and theoretically, a program), I would be fine with a ruling that a hacker without the proper tools, cannot hack. Of course, that means I won't be doing much to save the mystery hacker tonight. wink.gif To everyone else, I'll promise to switch to using my rating 5 commlink ASAP, and hopefully be a bit more useful.

Oops on the init, I thought I had rolled it, but obviously screwed that up. Probabaly forgot to do the cut and paste of the results.

As for the armor thing, that was my version mix up. Thought armor DV subtracted directly instead fo being dice to roll for effectiveness. Bad of me.

Im gonna use paint to draw up the floor plans to his apartment as i see them adamu and then try to send them to you. It would take me longer to post it and link to it so I will try this first.

You want my initiative and combat rolls?? I imagine my gyro harness is OFF. I forgot about it while i was changing clothes and i didnt put it back on so i will just say that it got stuffed in my bag

Rocky

To start with Rocky will just find the best cover he can where he will be able to watch the car as well as be aware of his surroundings.

He will keep his focus on the car, but every 20 seconds or so scan the area to make sure no one is sneaking up on him.

He'll give the car about 10 minutes to see if maybe they are just waiting for someone else, which will give him time to think.

Edited the text message thing. I knew for a fact your comm wasn't connected to any of your cyber, so not your cybereyes or ears, but looking at your sheet I saw that you'd paid Y50 for your shades, which I thought equalled the base Y25 for the shades, plus the Y25 for an imagelink. No worries, my mistaken assumption.

Sweet work on the map. Let's say that square is six meters on a side, shall we? Are maps like that something most any regular person can do, and I am just the freak? Or are you, like, really good at that stuff?
Maps like that could really be helpful for the game....

You won't need initiative until such time as you make contact. Of course, per your IC post, they are already right outside your door. So if you do something proactively, you will need initiative and a surprise test.
If you just lay in wait, you'll be on delay, but still roll both the initiative and surprise test for such time as contact is made.
If you want to do up a bunch of actions it would save us time - but since if you lay in wait you won't know exactly what you'll be responding to....

QUOTE (BlackHat)
Others have pointed out that no where in the rules does it say that you cannot do those things without the correct program,

Actually, it sorta does. Check out top of page 208, right column. Says you don't use atts at all, only programs. So that is a direct contradiction of p. 223.

But I have given up on the hacking rules making any sense at all.

At this point, I am not so much concerned with making them seem logical, but just following the RAW as best I can.

In any case, you certainly do have programs - namely, your Response, System, Firewall, and Signal (well, two soft and two hardware features). These represent your icon.

As a rule of thumb, when I can't figure out the matrix rule for something, I am inclined simply to use meat rules, since AR/VR is now supposed to be more analogous to the meat world.

Since p. 223 is specifically about Hacking skill, not Cybercombat, I am going with the p. 208 reading, which says that for cybercombat you, without a combat program, would roll only your cybercombat skill - so for you that's 2 dice. Base DV 0.

Anyway, all this is academic since based on your initiative of 8, which is applicable from the moment you arrive on the scene and see what there is to see, you lose initiative. The Gundam-looking thing is all over you. Trust me when I say that he does have plenty of combat programs. In cybercombat you resist with Response + Firewall - you can use Edge if you want.
BlackHat
Not really worth the effort. biggrin.gif Sticking around for round-two isn't going to shift the tide of battle one way or another. If I live this attack, I can fire off my message. If not, I'll spend my round using a complex action to reboot my commlink, and fire off the text-message warning next round, then think about switching commlinks to help out online. But, with this metalink, I am pretty much f-ed. wink.gif

So, since he's firing missles at me, I guess its time for me to resist. Response+Firewall = 2 so: 6,1 = 1 hit, but half of my dice are ones, so its really a glitch - and not a critical one (so no restoration of edge). Hm, let you have fun with that one, as I think I'll need the remainder of my edge to get my ass outta here. biggrin.gif

Damage Resistance is System + Armor so 1 die = 4... 0 hits, and no glitches.

My metalink's condition monitor has 9 boxes... and I assume I failed to avoid the attack, or to resist any damage... but at least its not the hacker getting hit, eh?

I can see!!!! You know what you are right! I do have glasses and a glove and yea they would be image linked. I didnt scroll down my sheet far enough to see that stuff. it was stupid of me to squish it all together like that. I was looking where I had my clothes and armor and stuff. Lets just leave things the way they are for right now but I will remember I have hose things and include them in future posts. Guess it kind makes up for my magically appearing hockey bag.

About my map. Its really a piece of crap but you can go ahead and think its great lol. Every computer has the basic paint program. Start -> programs -> accessories -> paint. All i did to make it was use a bunch of rectangle templates that you just drag to adjust the size and a circle template for the red dot and a pencil for the lines pointing to stuff. There is also a button to insert text.

The hardest part was going to my email account and opening up my web builder and uploading the file. I used yahoo which lets you have 15mb for webspace. After it was loaded I just went to my file manager and there is a view link to see the image and it already had its own address and everything.

Play around with your paint program.

Assuming Cerberus has the drop on the bad guys they open the door (or blast open the door if they know he is there), the room is dark so they begin to walk into his apartment looking for him and thats when he opens up on them after the 3rd guy is in the entrance.

If the bad guys come in firing grenades and shit then Cerberus will just go on full defense and try to take cover for the 1st and 2nd IP. I'd need more details for his 3rd IP.

Actually, unless I missed something, everyone does their first IP, and then people with multiple passes continue (2nd ed was where you counted down from highest by tens, so that most sams went three times before the sec guards got to go once).

So what happens in the bad guy's attack? Well, I shit you not, he rolled a glitch and only one success. So he scores no damage.

Now it's glitch vs glitch - the bad guy's finger missiles jam up (program glitch - no pun intended), while Smith flinches in the meat, falling off the security stool onto the floor with Teru (simple action to get up, if and when you want to).

BlackHat, that makes it your action - let me know what you want to do.

And by the way -
House Rule Announcement

The idea of regaining an Edge point every time you Crit Glitch is one of the dumbest rules I have ever seen. You could always use the new point to negate the glitch, in which case there would be no Crit Glitches. Or else you are simply being rewarded for what is supposed to be A) a really shitty thing, and B) a deterrent from just doing everything with low skill scores.
So that rule does not exist in this campaign.

Lol, that's fine by me.

I think if you negate the critical glitch (like I did earlier) you wouldn't regain any edge because the critical glitch never happened. At least, the way I have ruled it in the past was that you only regain edge if you suffer some adverse effects of the glitch (similarly, on some rolls, critical glitching doesn't really do anything bad - so no karma)... and I think the basic idea is that karma rewards those who bad things randomly happen to with good things later on... but I agree, its sort of a silly rule.

As for my action, for the time being, I will get up off the floor. Then, as a free action, I will send the previous message to Sledge, then as another simple action I will unload "edit" from active memory.

Let me know if you would like me to post IC reguarding the last combat round, or this next one - maybe after it is resolved (though no rolls should be necessary on my end).

BlackHat

Well, since you are still there in AR, the avatar switches to a different attack program and on the third IP attacks you. He's not messing around this time, and even if you roll all hits, you are crashing. So you crash.

Yes, go ahead and IC all this.
BlackHat
Also, I have some matrix security knowledge skill. Could a roll possibly tell me what sort of response an alert going off on this sort of system would bring (after the IC)?

Logic (3) + Matrix Security (2) = 5 dice
5,6,4,1,4 = 2 hits

My OOC estimation is that, I would doubt they would send guards here in the real world, since the attack is coming from the matrix - but assuming it calls up some matrix security (and they finish off our hacker) it will be a matter of seconds before they see us in the cameras and call for RL backup, right? biggrin.gif

BlackHat

1. You don't think those were IC - you think they were MCT counter-hackers.

2. Since the fight was taking place in the central node, your guess is that they won't be able to do anything at all with the system until they take the node from skinhead hacker.

Your knowledge doesn't really cover what the physical response might be out here in the sticks.
BlackHat

Okay, first off, you said you went to thermo once you plunged your room into darkness by killing the lights, but once the goons open your door, the hall light spills in, making it partial light, so that's -2 for thermo. But during the first IP you can just use a free action to switch to LL, so no worries.

Okay, you hear them mucking with your door for about five minutes, and then they open it, and they all come in looking for you just like you thought they might. They all have big dusters on, with Mossberg CMDTs and of course shades that are probably enhanced. But you totally get the jump on them - they assumed you are just some dumb troll who went home and went to sleep.

So you wait for all three to come in, and your first shot literally blows the guy's head off.
Next shot misses, of course.
Next shot kills next guy.
Fourth shot should have killed third guy, but somehow he is still standing.
Fifth shot finishes him.
Of course, in IC terms it is just like you are mowing them down in a continuous hail of bullets until they all fall - that was five shots/15 rounds in 2.5 seconds.
You are just getting to your gun-cam thing at the window when the wall you are up against explodes inward with automatic fire from the other building. You forgot your +2 dam resist from your bone lacing, but I rolled it for you. Even so, you take three boxes of stun damage.

You can IC that or wait, but I need initiative and all that for the next round.

Okay, if Sledge is using up two turns (and not entering combat with the mystery monster) I'll post my intentions for the next few rounds as well.

One important question, was the van left open (when the hippies were pulling out all the explosives and junk, did they close it up). I assume I would have no idea how to tell if it was locked or not, but I wanna get Teru-san to safety and that's our safest bet ATM.

Rebooting my commlink (to get back on the matrix, at large) will take one round (complex action). I wanna get back online so Cal, Sledge, the Hacker, or Deerwalker could message me with the status or the new plan. After that, Mr. Smith will pocket Teru's gun and spare clips (on the desk), and then start hefting up his body.

I want to get back online, and help the hacker, since that's our best bet - but it really is only a matter of time before the hammer comes down on that node - and I can't stay logged in long enough to really lend a hand... Adam knows saving Teru's life, and getting his other allies out while they have the chance is probably a better use of his time/abilities.

Unless I hear otherwise from Sledge or Cal, Mr. Smith will assume the drek has officially hit the fan, and that it is now time to start moving out... he could care less if the building actually gets blown up, or if the escaped animals find their way down the elevator or not... he did his job, and now he'd rather abort than get arrested for trying to save a squirrel.

Hopefully the hacker has the good sense to log before he gets his brain fried.

Yeah I think that about covers it.

I didn't realize how bad a chance I had at doing that untill I started making the post, but wanted to stick with the plan.

Yeah i would definately like to do the IC up to the wall exploding. Did I get hurt from debris or bullets or from falling?

Initiative: 11 dice
4, 4, 5, 4, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1 = small gltich
final initiative = 12

1st IP:
simple action - stand up and run to my bedroom doorway for partial cover
simple action - scanning for targetsw/ low light vision

Eyes = 11 - 2 for rain (If im not already i will be in low light vision i think.
6, 4, 4, 6, 6, 1, 6, 3, 6 = 5 hits

2nd IP:
simple action - short narrow burst at the guy who has the better angle on me
6 dice?? crap. 10- 1 for damage - 1 for shooting from cover - 2 from targets being in partial cover
3, 4, 3, 6, 3, 1 = 1 hit

simple action - short narrow bursts at the same guy if he hasnt been finished off.
6 dice
2, 5, 1, 6, 4, 3 = 2 hits

(what to do with this roll?? I wouldnt be switching targets any longer within the same IP so i guess just throw it out?

simple action - switch target and short narrow burst
6 - 2 for switching = 4 dice..
1, 4, 4, 6, = 1 hit )

3rd IP:
2 simple actions - short narrow bursts at the second target
6 dice
4, 6, 1, 3, 6, 4 = 2 hits
6, 5, 3, 2, 4, 4 = 2 hits

Bullet dodges:
5 dice
#1 2, 2, 4, 4, 4, = 0 hits
#2 3, 6, 1, 2, = 1 hits (4 dice)
#3 2, 1, 3, = 0 hits (3 dice)
#4 5, 5, = 2 hits (10 dice)

damage soaks: 16 dice! 17 - 1 for damage
6, 2, 2, 2, 4, 2, 5, 6, 3, 6, 4, 4, 3, 5, 5, 4, = 6 hits
1, 5, 5, 1, 5, 4, 5, 3, 4, 6, 1, 2, 6, 2, 1, 2 = 6 hits
6, 3, 4, 3, 2, 2, 5, 3, 5, 6, 4, 2, 6, 2, 2, 1 = 5 hits
4, 5, 4, 4, 1, 6, 6, 1, 6, 2, 5, 3, 3, 2, 1, 3 = 5 hits

Okay, I assume the first thing you want to do is reboot. You can have that done and be just starting on something else by about the time Sledge faces off with Kitty.
The van doors were left wide open.
Teru's a little guy, but still weighs 70 kilos. Per Encumbrance on p. 300, there is no way you can carry him with 3 strength. But I make exceptions for short hops. If you can score enough successes per Carrying Capacity on p. 300, you can carry him to the van at half your walking speed (20 meters to cover). Otherwise, you will be stuck dragging him, and then trying to somehow work him up into the van, which is a project that will take longer than most of the other things that are going on.

Well, I guess you slipped and fell into a pile of garbage cans with a huge clatter and that disturbed a bunch of fornicating cats, and they starting yowling. But nothing happens, and you perceive no further threats. You can IC into your coffin hotel. But let's continue to keep things one step at a time.
