Nice touch.

Anyway, hey everyone. Hope I'm not breaking the general theme too much; today just wasn't a good day for angst.

[ Spoiler ]
Couple of rolls:
Starting cash: 3d6: 2 6 2 = 1200Y + 4 (from chargen) = 1204Y (Rule of 6 doesn't apply to starting cash, does it? If it does, add 300 Y to above.)
Cooking skill: 09 05 01 (04 from bonus die) -eah, I just like rolling dice for no good reason.

Not everything in the Sixth World is angst!
Caught up on everything except p.39. Everyone's individual page should now link properly to the Prelude page linked in the first post, including yours, Eyes

Every piece of artwork or visuals I know about (except a couple of the floorplan draughts) should be accessible through your PC's main pages. Any glitches or wished-for additions, let me know.
I'll be away from later today until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Glad to have you back and I hope that your trip was most enjoyable. My least favorite part about a vacation ending is how so much work seems to pile up while one is away. As much as I'm sure we all get the urge to slack off work in order to spend more time on recreational activities . . . dumpshock doesn't pay the bills. I'll look forward to hearing form you whenever RL allows for it

Absence announcement for my PCs and fellow GMs:
Tomorrow evening (Sunday) I will be leaving with a colleague of mine for a data collection trip. I will be in the Chicago area making use of the wonderful facilities provided by the Department of Energy and will not be back in town until Tuesday night. During this time I will be working almost around the clock and will not have any time to check dumpshock. I am sorry for the inconvience and thank everyone for their cooperation.
Cheers,

Hm. Beam time at the Chicago APS, then? That place is so cool; a synchrotron with an on-site hotel.

Of course you hardly get to appreciate it at the time, what with the back-to-back 10-12 hour shifts.

Damn, it sounds like a fellow LiTS player has also been (or still is) an APS general user
While we have a room in the guest house, like always it probably won't get used. My colleague and I usually just take turns catching naps in the offices next to the experiment hall. But yes. . .the APS is damn cool.

Only once (summer research job). The whole thing was a fiasco; we dodn't get enough time so our data wasn't good enough to publish; all that work for nothing.

Of course mostly I remember racing the trikes around the outer path at 2:30 in the morning and sneaking into offices to catch bits of the World Cup, so at least *some* of it was a positive experience.

Never got to see the rest of Chicago though; flew in on Friday afternoon, (two hours after getting called, "Hey, we need you down here." "Okay, I'll catch the red-eye and see you in the morning." "No, I mean *now*; your flight leaves in two hours." "What? But the airport is an hour and a half drive away!" Last time I fly by the seat of my pants *ever*.

), worked three 12-hour shifts, flew back Monday afternoon.

C'mon, tell me you haven't done something similar.

Oh, right, should probably include the program design roll:
[ Spoiler ]
Creating: Plan for Analyze6 (Sneak1) TN 5 (base 4 +1option)
Operational Utility Design: 08 05 03 02 02 01 (05 --bonus die) = 3 successes
Plan will take 7*3=21 hours, unchangable, and 19Mp of memory (program design size will be 8*8*3=192Mp.) (This means with the current rate of time passage I'll actually be able to begin coding sometime around September.

)
Oh, and are we using the optional bug rules? In fact, what optional Matrix rules are we using? Also, can you default from one program design skill to another (say if I wanted to write an Attack utility instead of buying it like a normal person?) Maybe this should be an email to the GM.

Chemistry. Specifically my little trip to the APS was as an undergrad researcher, working under a bioinorganic chemist. It was fun, but academic research is probably not the career for me (which is bad 'cause I want to go to grad school and that's pretty much what you do as a Chem grad student.

Two ways to go about it. You have acid etch in the shop, which will do a number on the metal, but you'll have to use all of it in order to see good results. The time will be about two hours, but the etch liquid is expensive, 500

for the liter bottle you have. Alternatively, you could corrode the metal through galvanic corrosion by sitting them in salt water and passing a low-level electric current through the bath. This is cheaper, only running up your electric bills by 200

for the month, but it will take longer, at least two weeks to see any significant amount of corrosion.

That last post read anything like right? I was trying to get a little of James's zone-out-factor there, and explain why he doesn't like being around lots of people by trying to peek inside his head a little. If it's confusing just let me know and I'll try another approach; most of the reason I do this stuff is to improve my writing/description ability, and feedback's the best way to improve.

The_Eyes: I am just finishing up B.S. degrees in chemistry and biology. It is an honor to be roleplaying with a fellow chemist. My trips to the APS was part of my undergrad research, which I will be continuing as a M.S. student in the fall. My specific area of interest is structural virology.
There are a lot of opportunities available for industry research after grad school, especially for a chemist. Not to mention the fact that the industry jobs (especially with the drug companies) pay quite bit more than do academic positions.

Oh I know. I wish I had had the money to go straight to grad school out of college. Unfortunately I didn't, and now I'm looking at the prospect of applying without any good academic letters of reference; not a fun prospect. Means I'm really gonna have to study for that GRE 2.

A couple of rolls, just in case they're actually used. Almost don't want to post these; they're so bad.

[ Spoiler ]
First off, Comprehension tests for Jane's instructions. I made two seperate rolls as the orders could be thought of as two seperate commands rather than one big one:
Pilot rating: 05 03 01 01 01 01
Agent Hacking Pool: 04 04 03 03 01 01
Computer(Programming): 08 04 03 02 01 01
(!! Out of 18 dice, only one of 'em was higher than a 5? Yeesh.)
Pilot rating: 17 08 03 03 02 01
Agent Hacking Pool: 10 10 05 04 02 01
Computer(Programming): 10 04 03 03 02 02
Second, Search tests for Jane. These are simple searches, so base TN 4, minus 1 for +4d6 matrix init =3. The irony is not lost on me that I am actually slower than my agent.

Oh, and does it bother anyone else that agents are no better at searching on their own than smart frames, as agent hacking pool has nothing to do with search tests?
Search roll(1): 03 03 03 02 02 01 (!! I'm either lucky or cursed.)
Search roll(2): 08 05 04 02 02 02
Base times of 6 and 4, respectfully.
Hmm, I think I need to program a search assistant for my search assistant.

Slip- Your luck held when it counted, that's all I'm gonna say. OK you're up first. Post your action in the IC thread and any necessary rolls that you anticipate in the OOC thread. Oh, and we're in 'combat mode' now, so watch your time. 3 seconds per combat turn. You don't have to keep an EXACT count (too much work on both our parts) but you should not be advancing by more than a few seconds per post. See the gun battle outside Tommy Wong's with myself and Virgil for an example of time flow if you need one.
