[QUOTE]Of course, if they are based on the subject's DNA then every sperm will be XX (so no male offspring), but otherwise this should be workable. |
Why can't they crop one X gene in Genetoshop to produce a Y?

Read the description under BioScuplting Sex Change....seems a male can be make female, female to male and be a third sex, both, does not say any of the changes are infertile.

Hmm, I may be missreading it, but from pg 62, under Sex Change
"The character's new sex is fully functional, but he or she is not fertile."

It does say that; but it makes no sense, particularly since the next sentences says that there will be a change in hormone levels, which implies a change in gonads. Considering the sort of bioware they have, creating custom gonads would be trivial. In the case of sex change, it would only require changing out one well-known and easily-identified gene for another. In the case of a cerebral booster, it would probably require changing out dozens of delicate genes that control the growth of brain tissue.
The latter is far easier than the former.
And, of course, it is trivial just to hand out off-the-shelf gonads, as well. The resulting child won't be genetically related to the parent, but that doesn't particularly matter to some people.

For some people it's probably preferable.

That's not entirely correct. You would have to change out one chromosome - and that chromosome has a lot of component genes that carry some pretty heavy heriditary baggage. It may not be as easy as you propose.

Mules have a normal sexual cycle and hormones but they're just not compatible with would-be mates.
Could be an interesting basis for a run. Corp sells Sex Change to client who then against the odds produce and offspring. Corp finds out and claims the child, containing copyrighted genetic stock is company property and hires runners to retrieve said property before or after prosecutting the parents for making illegal copies ...
