I just played my first magician and it was pretty fun. Although it's hard as mentioned above to really generalize a character. By saying I played I magician I mean i'm playing a pacifist, who specializes in Manipulation spells and not combat or physical spells. So one magician and another can differ vastly. But yeah this character is much more fun than my gunbunny, which was basically point and shoot.

Well the Archtype I like is the human face with little to no cyberware or anything like that, just good at blending in and chatting it up. Its a rather limited character now that there are skill caps. One of my old 2e characters had a negotiation skill of 22 started at 6 and just bought up with karma
With the skill caps its much more a contact monkey and less focus on just making a good impression.

I like adepts or augmented characters who are combat-oriented, but with a secondary specialty of face. Mages are okay, but I don't like them as much.
In SR3, my favorite type was a sorcerer, because you could give them a lot of other skills (since they only needed the sorcery skill for their "specialty", they had lots of extra skill points even at the lowest allotment of them), and they got a lot of spell points, too. They could be real Swiss army knife characters.

Tech based characters. Usually a infiltrator/hacker or face/hacker mix. I love being able to turn enemy tech against them. My TM was my favorite because I could turn him into a great hacker pretty early on, grab a few useful echos like overclock and skinlink, and then I started getting into other skills mainly stuff to help break into places when attacking the network from a distance wasn't an option.

BARBARIAN! For 4e D&D, that is. However, in SR....I'm not sure yet. There are some I don't have a particular interest in, but there are other concepts that I am fascinated with. My mage that I was previously preparing for play fell by the wayside for an ex-LS cop (with Heavy Weapons skill. who'da thunk it?) since one of the lads is preparing to join the group, and wants to play a Theurge (son of a pastor, just got out of a christian college. Not surprising, but for a first character, it's prolly a good idea). I think that Weapons Specialist is the one that most draws my eye....

I can't stand it if the "Face" is incompetent (stupid RP), and I don't have the skills to do it myself, so I'll generally invest in that myself. And I do like the flexibility of being a magician. I'm gonna try a hacker now; I might like that too.

Wrong question...the real question in SR is what role and flavor do you enjoy most:
Magical support:Conjuror, COunterspeller, Sorcerer (Long range fire support, mental manipulation, illusionist, clairvoyaint), banishing specialist)
Combat support: Close quarters combat, sniper, heavy weapons, grenadier
Hacking support: Technomancer, hacker, data specialist, infiltration expert
Vehicle support: Drone, vehicle, fire support
Face (everybody PC should learn to be a face IMHO!! )
RC has a good listing of these roles, and as they state a PC can have multiple roles.
Me, I like to play magical support. Especially the illusionist/mind controlling sort, with a bit of conjuration.

I've always had a soft spot for techie/ infiltration experts, my current character is a TM with biowire and skinlink. he is good at stealth, has a few high end registered sprites (nearly passed out compiling, registering and reregistering them because he is too stubborn to understand "point of diminishing returns") and a good handgun...

While I agree with Warlordtheft, I sadly fall into the category that Ascalaphus mentions. And having seen someone play a face
well (to the point of falling to Dogs in the Vinyard Rule#0: "GM says yes or rolls dice," rather than the player initiating the roll) I've watched Jim sweet talk, fast talk, and beat around the bush with NPCs so expertly that the GM decided that no roll was needed (Jim's characters always had the skills for it anyway). And I have no hope of ever being that good.

A friend of mine is like that too. We agreed that it was okay as long as his PCs had the stats to be as good as he played them.

Although I'm fascinated with the technological aspects of SR, I've always loved playing a mage. It stems from my first exposure to SR back in 1990 and when I read that mages suffered Drain when they cast.
(mind you, at the time, I was so thoroughly burned out on a certain medieval-fantasy RPG, that I will NOT deign to mention here, and I was re-embracing my love of science-fiction with Gibson's Neuromancer.)

Very hard not to mention the book that jumpstarted the Cyberpunk Genre (if such a thing exists).
Not only that, it has the many character concepts that are perfect for Shadowrun. The Hacker/Decker, Street Samurai (dosen't have to be cybered all the way up. Check out the orc samurai from the Street Samurai Catalog), and the Techie (the Finn). Hell, you can make a argument for mage as well...

Anything with Technomancer added in to it. Usually the Hacker/Drone Rigger type, sometimes the face/hacker/drone rigger type and occasionally the B&E/Hacker/Drone Rigger/Face. I'm so completely in love with TMs that I am actually beginning to have a hard time trying to design anything else. I just spent a week trying to come up with a good street samurai idea and I'm still not happy with it.

It does tend to make the cost of progressing as a tm look like a bell curve, early on you have to pay for submerging, raising resonance and skills and those costs grow, then when you've gotten them close to the max the costs begin diminishing again as gaining echoes provides significantly better benefits than normal methods of progressing.
