The spliting of the Earthdawn and SR IP to 2 different companies makes me sad..

ah well

The game designers can talk all they want about something, but if they didn't make a rule for it it really doesn't matter what they think.

I'm a game designer, and I approve this message.

I applaud the work done to make both games seem so similar, and I am sorry it's breaking your hearts, but this over-romanticised notion of ED = SR is old, withered, and dead.

I also applaud the work many people around here have done finding links. But I have to wonder - have you also made exhaustive lists of every way that the two settings aren't the same? Have you found inconsistancies between Named NPC interactions? Does that even mean anything to you?

Yes. (Outside of being in different time periods, there aren't any significant differences.)

No.

It would if I found any.

Seriously, I'm blown away by this argument; this is like arguing that The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings aren't set in the same world.

You are, of course, assuming that Earthdawn is the same world as Shadowrun. I know, I know, there's a lot of hints and tips about them being the same; however, it should be noted that nowhere in the rules for the games does it mention that. The game designers can talk all they want about something, but if they didn't make a rule for it it really doesn't matter what they think.

Earthdawn ≠ Shadowrun.

Yeah yeah yeah, We know, especially given the fact that ED is now being run by our old friends over in the UK. But the Horror meta plot is a great meta plot. So some of us will not let that part go. (Until a better idea comes along) There no such thing as perfectly consistent canon, which is as it should be. I do favor 200% there being as many shadowrun releases as possible, and if i can aid in encourage a new book then I will be happy to put froward any stupid but cute argument i can come up with to see it happen. (Hopefully I'll sneak some good logical arguments in along the way.)

No surprise that you approve your own message. grinbig.gif

I am a game designer and I agree with Neurosis.

Just because there are no rules and mechanics for something as ephemeral as ShadowRun's link to Earthdawn, doesn't mean that the two aren't part of the same universe. Because they are even if now they're owned by two companies who came to a mutual agreement that, "yes, the connections that exist still exist, but we're not going to create any new ones. We're both free to develop the product we own as we see fit."

Acutally the links a bit deeper than that. IIRC it stand that if they want to link either way the will consult each other. I know CLG follows what happens in earthdawn as well.

Again a a developer (though Freelance) rules aren't everything I mean how would you write a "rule" for a link between two universes?

Howevere the links still stand and tbh don't effect the avrage game at all its all the big things. All the stuff that games hint to but never touch. The feeling that alot of the big powers are involved in things much larger than than just making money or gaining power.

Just make them as a tribal creature in swamp areas around teh world with stone age knwoledge.

Scaly skin
Underwater Vision
Gills
Prehensile Tail
Thermographic Vision
Beak (Snoutlike Lizardface)

As a metavariant, sure, but making a player burn all his positive qualities on aesthetics is not really a fair shake.

That'd be like saying,
"You know, I just realized that SR doesn't need to have two genders since it has rules for sexual reassignment.
No wonder all of the rule books use she and her.
From now on, I'm going to make all my characters take Gene treatments or penile implants to play as males."

Hell no. That is what i would give the player for free, or at least the sum of the points (+/-) as a racial point - If he wants to SURGE his lizardmen he can do that as well, not that he would need to look more freakish.

What I posted was essentially just what was needed to look like one without building to many rules.
