Ok. Now that the SR4 pdf is out I think its about time we start having some SR4 games around here.
First up, I'd like to do something quick and simple to test/familiarize people with the combat of SR4. For that purpose I have converted the Food Fight! scenario from the First Run adventure book. For those of you who aren't familiar with Food Fight!, it is basically like a random encounter. After a night of doing whatever, the group of shadowrunners stop at a Stuffer Shack to get some munchies. Unfortunately, a group of gangers have decided to rob the place at the same time. As the guns start blazing, food goes flying as various packages are shredded in the hail of bullets.
I want to make sure this runs quickly since it is just for familiarization purposes, so please only speak up if you are serious about playing and posting a minimum of once per day.
To get started I just need character concepts from people. Just a few sentences will be enough, though I will accept more lengthy ones if you like. Once I have selected from those concepts, there will be time allotted for chargen using the standard 400 build points, with assistance via post or pm as needed.
Also, while we run through the Food Fight! scenario, I will be looking at the characters' backgrounds and designing more of a true adventure around one or more details within them to follow this up with.

If you were wanting to do anything complicated with chargen it would take a little bit more work without an SR4 book, but if you're willing to try it, I am willing to help. Alternatively, you can use one of the sample characters from the book and foregoe chargen. Just give me a simple concept and i'll provide you the sample character's stats.
As far as the actual gameplay goes, especially early on, its going to be more about learning the rules. So not having a book yourself won't be a problem.
Food Fight is a simple scenario and if you've played it before it's fine. It is just something quick and easy to throw at you to jump right into the combat mechanics of SR4.

This sounds good.
There has to be some kind of street shaman I could try. Alternatively I would also like to try some kind of physical adept specialized in close combat. I don't really mind since it's a short testing game.
Edit: How much is it and where did you get the pdf?

its $25 for the PDF, you can pick it up at the battlecorps website.
I am interested in doing Food Fight too, I think a Gun Bunny ex-ganger girl would be simple enough to get my feet wet in the new edition, if that would be ok.

If you are wanting to use one of the samples in the book, there is a Troll Street Shaman of the Rat. The only sample adept is a gunslinger adept. But as I said, I am perfectly willing to help people who don't have the book create characters.

*sigh* Well...I'm a doomsayer when it comes to SR4, but I want to see what it's like, so this does sound interesting.
Problem is, I don't have the book, nor do I have the money to buy the book and create a character/look up the rules. I could go with a sample guy from the book, but what about knowing the rules?

A lot of what you'd need to know has already been revealed in the SR4 forum. The info there should be enough to give you a good grasp of the mechanics involved.
That being said, I am interested in this myself, although I am not too sure about my availability at the moment. If I can work something out, I'd like to try running an Hermetic mage.

As Fortune has said most of the rules you will need to know have already been reveal in the SR4 Forum and anything that hasn't been explained I can give you the details of.
For the most part you can still do the same things you could do in SR3. So you can describe what you want to do and I'll tell you what you need to roll and why. I am trying to have this game be a trainer for SR4 both for the players and myself and that will already necessitate a lot of discussion of the rules.

Looks like I'm on board then, I'll be available most every day usually good for several posts a day.
Character concept:
Human magician adept, ex-Lone Star patrol officer turned bounty hunter. He got booted out of Lone Star for sleeping with his Captain's wife and then in the fight that ensued when caught by said Captain he killed the man in self defense. He was actually charged with a crime but the matter was dismissed. He got booted from Lone Star and has at least one Enemy in Lone Star who'd like nothing better than to get even. He is a bright kid, somewhat impulsive and cocky but generally a decent person.

I understand that, which is why I mentioned my unknown availability status right off the bat.
Normally I am always available (ask anyone ... outside of Dumpshock I have no life!), but in the last couple of months I have been experiencing access problems. I am hoping that I have things worked out as of now, but won't know for sure for another week or so.
In any case, even if I am not actively involved, I will still definitely be monitoring the game. Good luck.

Hey count me in...If there is still places left. I haven't got the book or the slightest idea on the rules - I will be doing some reading to check out the twists and turns of the new ruleset tho...If you don't mind doing some handholding while I make the character and throughout the game...I can post once per day no probs there...I also haven't ran the scenario so I go t no clue on what happens there (besides what you revealed in your first post).
Characterwise I will go for something along the lines of the Troll Ganger style. A troll ex-ganger turned vindicator. Not much chrome on him besides the stuff he needs to stay alive on the street. He found out that he had more of an ethics code than what your average street ganger group required and dished them to adopt a more of a friendly-neighborhood street sammie(without the chiba stuff)/vindicator type. He's got a street doc buddy who's managed to get him the average chrome he wears with pride and he probably got some ex-ganger contacts who mostly think him a coward, a traitor, a mark for punishment or d.All of the above...
How's that?
Slacker
Sep 1 2005, 01:56 PM
Sounds good netlich.
As far as the book thing goes, it looks like that most people won't have the book so its not a problem. There be a bit more "handholding" than I was first expecting, but what the hell, why not? This is more a learning exercise than anything else.
Since there are going to be several people needing help with chargen, I think we'll do it all (or at least most) within the forum, so I don't have to say the same thing over and over again to different people.

Now, instead of almost being ready to retire, she's had to spend her savings simply to play catch up with the rest of the field.

Okay all of you people who actually have the time and money to hunt down one of the SR4 books, a question.
Does the Edge/Quality for Innate Magical Talent still exist? The one I'm looking for is Astral perceptions. If it does how much does it cost.
I've ready to put together a character sheet and so I'm chasing through the various posts on SR4 rules but I didn't see that answer anywhere.
Shalimar
Sep 1 2005, 04:10 PM
To get Perception, you'd need to either buy Magician and get it along with 1 point of magic, or Adept and take the power.
Cedric Rolfsson
Sep 1 2005, 04:19 PM
Those are the two ways generally accepted but there was a Edge, Innate Magical Talent, the cost of which varied based upon what the innate magical talent was, and one of those was Astral Vision.
The character can see the astral through astral perceptions.
In my Companions book, SR2, it cost three points. I wanted to know if that had made it all the way into the new SR4 version or not.

As Shalimar said, the only way to get Astral Perception is to buy the Magician Quality, or the Adept or Mystic Adept Quality and geting the Astral Perception power.
There is no Innate Magical Talent quality in SR4. At least not yet, they may add it in the Magic book, but that is neither here nor there.

Slacker, here is the character concept, in my next post I'll throw up the character stats themselves. If I did something wrong in the stats, let me know. I am kind of surprised how high her pistol's skill got without maxing out agility or buying aptitude/pistols 7. Its in the range of:
13
= 6(Pistols) +2 (Semi-Automatics Spec) +5(9) (agility) + 2 Smartlink
It can even get 3 dice higher (2 more in agilit, 1 more in pistols) thats rather uh, a lot.
Anyway, History:
Tempty Windsong
Tempty was the average Seattle slum girl, she grew up a part of the neighborhood gang, the Golden Angels, and she had a gun in her hand from about the time she started to...um... develop, simply for protection, and later because her skill with it earned her a rep in the gang, and on the streets. At the time there was a businessman named Garland Greene that happened to own a dive in the Golden Angel's territory, and he contracted the gang to provide muscle to keep the place running smoothly. It got the gang money as well as free food and a place to hang out in out of the heat. It also ultimately led to the gangs destruction. A few other gangs in the area wanted in on the action as Greene's business was doing so well that he was expanding into a nightclub in a better part of town. The Rats and the Sharks merged, and between them killed the vast majority of the Angels, leaving only a few badly injured ex-angels.
Tempty who had been with Garland in his night club as his date/escort only caught the tail end of it, and it was more then enough, she barely got away with multiple injuries. Garland's legitimate business was only a sideline for his fixing, and he was easily able to get a street doc for her wounds, as well as slipping in a number of upgrades since she was already on the table. Tempty was no stranger to implants, she had gotten them as she could save up, but these she got all in one shot off the money that Garland owed the Angel's, and some money out of his own pocket besides. After her recovery she pursued her on again off again romance with Garland, as well as finding a place on a shadowteam at his recommendations. Its been almost a year in the shadows since then.

Ok well I think I'll give a try to the new system with a really basic idea of a physical adept. I will likely need some help with working out the points and everything but I'll try from what I can find.
[ Spoiler ]
Concept:
Taku is a professional killer. He masters the martial arts as well as the use of small arms all for the porpuse of being able to efficiently, silently, and cleanly kill. He has been using his abilities as part of various teams of shadowrunners and has been well known for his team work and seriousness on one hand, and his cold remarks and sometimes distant attitude on the other.
Background:
Born in Japan he moved to Seattle with his parents at age 15. He was not quick to integrate into society and from then on kept a distant attitude about life, caring mostly for his own improvement. He views combat as an art and himself as an artist. His goals always involving the improvement of his self-defense and offensive capabilities in any combat situation. He has always had a very professional way of thinking and doing things, dealing in the shadows as a businessman. On a personal level, he is quite spiritual and centered on himself. Meditation is part of his everyday life and he hopes to some day find a mate to share his life with.
This very basic as I said before, but I think it would be fun to try.

For easy access, here is the Chargen Summary Talia's done. Just post anything you have specific questions about.
[ Spoiler ]
CHARGEN
Q. How's the BP cost for the different races now?
25 dwarf, 20 ork, 30 elf, 40 troll.
Metatype abilities look unchanged (vision, etc.)
Human: +1Edge
Ork: +3B, +2S, -1C, -1L
Dwarf: +1B, -1R, +2S, +1W, -1Initiative
Elf: +1A, +2C
Troll: +4B, -1A, +4S, -2C, -1I, -1L, -1Initiative
Q. What is the chargen structure?
400 Build Points (bp)
Attributes
1: Free (+ any racial modifiers)
2-5: 10 bp per point
6: 25 bp
Maximum points allocated to physical + mental attributes is capped at 50% of total points. Magic, Edge, Resonance are not included in this cap.
Active Skills
4 points per skill
10 points for a skill group
2 points for a specialization.
Max at 6 without an exceptional quality, then 7.
Start with only one skill at 6 with the rest 4 or lower, or two at 5 with the rest 4 or lower. No starting with a 5 and a 6. Maximum group rating at chargen is 4.
Knowledge skills: 1/2 active price.
Resources: 5000 per BP max 50 BP, but looks like a lot of stuff is reduced in price.
Spells: 3 BP per spell, 5 karma during play.
Contacts: 1 BP per rating point.
Q. How can a PC become Awakened?
Buy the positive quality of Magician (15 bp). (Presumably there is also an adept positive quality, but I haven't seen it yet.)
Q. How can a PC become a Technomancer?
Buy the positive quality of Technomancer (5 bp).
Q. Okay, cutting to the chase: which qualities made it?
Infirm made it, but the mechanics are totally different.
Ambidextrous, animal empathy, aptitude, astral chameleon, blandness, codeslinger, double jointed, exceptional attribute, first impression was friendly face, focused concentration, guts, high pain tolerance, home ground, human looking, lucky, magic resistance, murky link was poor astral link, natural hardenning, natural immunity, photographic memory, quick healer, resistance to pathogens/toxins, toughness, will to live, allergy, astral beacon was astral impressions, bad luck is like cursed karma, codeblock, combat paralysis, elf poser, gremlins, incompetant, low pain tolerance, scorched, sensitive neural structure, sensitive system, simsense vertigo, spirit bane, uncouth, uneducated, weqk immune system.
New: addiction, ork poser.
No phobias, flashbacks, bad karma, dark secret, mysterious cyberware, amnesia, or day job.
Q. What about Friends-in-high places and Friends abroad?
Friends in High Places can be simulated by a Connections 6 Contact (i.e. it doesn't exist as a Quality, but it can still be used in the game). The special effect of Friends Abroad (being able to make new contacts easily in other places) isn't on the Qualities list. Sorry, but you're just going to have to RP your contacts.
Q. How do contacts work?
Contacts are bought at a cost equal to their Connections + Loyalty level (a Connection 2/Loyalty 3 contact costs 5 BP). The old "Buddy" designation is about Loyalty level 3-4, while the old Friend For Life designation is about Loyalty level 5-6. Connection is how "uber" your contact is on the food chain. Level 1 means they only have access to their own skills and equipment attached to their profession (which isn't so bad if you're only asking for a beer from a Bartender, but don't try to ask for a Shotgun or a new Hacker program). Higher levels of Connections means either they have access to more and better equipment (Corporate Scientist with access to a particle accelerator) or they are willing to introduce you to their own contacts (Fixers with a low Connection rating do not necessarily have few connections... they just aren't willing to introduce you to them), or perhaps they are higher up on the food chain (Corporate Executive rather than Middle Management/Grunt).

So far most things look good, but as I am going through your gear I am noticing a few things that need correcting (mostly because of availability).
1) you started with 180,000
, but you've spent 181425 (this effects the number of dice you rolled for starting cash so that will need to be redone)
2) you can't have that high a fake SIN. Starting availability is limited to 12 and Fake SIN's have Avail of Rating x 4 (meaning Rating 3 will max out availability).
3) the Commlink/OS combo you have should be 11,500 (2000 being cyber, 8000 for the commlink, and 1500 for the OS). also i may have just missed it, but where are you getting the integral datajack?
4) on your cybereyes, you went over capacity by 1, so you need to get rid of one of those mods
5) on you cyberears, you can't have rating 6 sound filter because of availability (rating 4 or less is all that will work)
6) on both Muscle Augmentation and Muscle Toner you can't have that high a rating because of availability (max rating within availability is 2 for each)-guess that means your pistols skill goes down a couple dice.
7) also, i notice you didn't take the pilot:ground vehicles skill, but did buy a bike, just wanted to make sure that wasn't an oversight

Currently I have concepts of:
Shalimar's gun-bunny
Gobogen's physical adept
Whizbang's hacker
netlich's Troll Ganger
Cydric's Mystic Adept
HMHVV and Fortune have expressed interest, but I haven't seen a concept yet.
I'm willing to have a large group of players for this, but I'll probably be narrowing it down to 6 or 7 players in the end. The sooner I get concepts the more likely you are to get one of the final slots.

Sorry about the errors, my PDF is rather finnicky, too much for my processor, it makes going through it a bit tough, and very time consuming as it slows up every page or so. I really loath Adobe, handhelds are much less choppy then pcs for reading PDFs, its rather surprising. I'm getting it printed up tomorrow, so it shouldn't be too bad to deal with until then.
As far as the datajack, oops, I misread the commlink entry, I read the 2 as being what it could accept, and not how big it would be going into something else. My bad. Essence will be 1.1 then.
Muscle Aug and Toner, drop to 2
Drop the vision Enhancement to 2 to bring it down to the 12 capacity total.
I just went back through everything and redid the errors, I ended up with quite a bit of extra cash, so I converted it back to BP. Droped the close-combat group in favor of Blades 2, freeing up 12 BP. With the 8 BP from losing 40k, that made 20BP. I bought Quick Healer, and Aptitude Pistols(didn't up my pistols to 7 though, the idea being she could be the best, but she isn't quite yet)

I would love to give this a shot if you still have room. Really want to get a chance to see these rules in practice, even if it's PbP... Which, I should add, I've never done before (PbP that is). So if you wold prefer people who have experience with that, that's cool and I'll just watch. Otherwise, if you have room, well, every good team needs a Face right?

P.S. -- Here's a character concept I kind of rushed together, stats to come later if you like it.
[ Spoiler ]
Concept for RYDELL DEANE, aka "The Dean"
The Dean got her first taste of the shadow world while working for the now defunct Cross Applied Technologies, where her status and solid work ethic as a low level Johnson allowed her both to interact with runners, as well as to build solid networking skills as they would apply to interacting in the shadows. Little did she know her corporate training would later aid her on the other side of the fence--let alone that she would ever end up there.
But when Cross began to crumble, The Dean soon found herself out of the job. Despite a job offer from Ares (among others), care of fellow Cross employees who found themselves being absorbed into the other company's fold, the experience of feeling her job "security" get yanked out from under her left a bad taste in her mouth. What good is a corporate retirement plan if the corporation is more likely to retire before you do? In the volatile world of the 2070's, where things continue to shake up perhaps more than ever before, The Dean quickly decided that locking herself in to a single employer was anything but a good idea.
And that's how The Dean found herself seriously considering life as a shadow runner. Sure it might be risky, but the pay could sure be good (she should know, she used to dole it out). At the very least, she believed her time as a Johnson would prepare her better for this profession than any other. Why go to another neighborhood when the one you're in is perfectly fine, and all you really need to do to be happy is to cross the street, metaphorically speaking.
And so, she crossed it. And she has yet to look back.
Rydell Deane is a lithe framed, female elf with sharp features, modest proportions, curly raven hair cut short for less hassle on the go, pale skin and green eyes. She prefers to wear women's cut actioneer business suits and London fog long coats, and has a penchant for Lucky Strike cigarettes (she probably smokes too many) and really good jazz.

Looks good Shalimar. Though, could you use spoiler tags instead of Code tags on the character sheet (in case you don't know how, just edit the posts and switch out the word CODE for Spoiler before and after the character sheet). It makes it easier for people to skim down the forum page. By the way, my assumption is that the second Predator IV pistol is just as backup, since you don't have the ambidextrous quality and smartlink doesn't apply to firing two weapons.
Wintermancer, its no problem that you don't have experience with PbP games and that concept looks good.
Right now we are in an open call stage of PbP games, looking for interested players. Currently I've gotten 7 concepts (including yours) and 3 others have expressed interest. I'm planning to let it set over the weekend and stop accepting concepts Monday or Tuesday. At which point I will select the 6 or 7 players that I want to keep. Then there will be a period of time spent on character generation (mostly for those without the book). Then we can get into actually playing the game.

Slacker, do you want the character sheets now or is it okay to wait till you've made the cut next week?

You can go ahead and make a character sheet now if you would like, but it is not required. Since I haven't decided on who will be in the group just yet, you may want to wait until after final selection, though.

Yea, just a back up, you never know when the first might break and you need another in a hurry.
Edit: Yes, bought the bike with no skill in Drive, 0 Drive is suppoused to represent the average person, able to get from point A to Point B, but not very capable of handling hazards that crop up. Between that and Auto, it should be fine as a mode of transportarion.

Alright, concept...
I'd like to play an action-type character. An adept gunslinger, real smart-ass. Someone that could be played by Jason Statham in a movie.
I haven't been able to find a printer to print out almost 30 pages of rules, so if I do get chosen, I'll probably have to work with the GM directly to create this guy, since I don't have the book.

Con Report, Day 2: Had a great time playing SR3 today. There was much blowing up of stuff, and I survived it all.
Hopefully I will be able to elbow into the SR4 preview tommorrow, in which I might be able to get my character together.
If I've seen any other dumpshockers, they haven't made themselves known.

CONTACTS (44)
Zeke (Bartender, Matchsticks), Loyalty 3, Connection 2
-Zeke is a middle aged troll who tends bar at the Matchsticks jazz club in Seattle, and one of The Dean's favorite people to talk to when she hangs there listening to music. As she is quite the regular attendee, they are on a first name basis.
Chopper (Street Doc, The Body Mall, Redmond), Loyalty 3, Connection 2
-Chopper is a human Street Doc working out of Redmond. He was a real surgeon once, before something went wrong and he lost his license. He runs a shop in The Body Mall, specializing in vatjobs. It was Chopper who installed The Dean's mild spattering of implants, as a subcontract job for Cross before the company went under.
Christopher Hatch (Mr. Johnson, Ares), Loyalty 4, Connection 5
-Hatch was The Dean's mentor at Cross, responsible for teaching her the ins and outs of life as a Mr. Johnson. They developed a strong working relationship over time, and by the time she started managing ops on her own they were really great friends... Perhaps they could have been more if Hatch weren't attracted to men.
Saul (Fixer, Downtown), Loyalty 2, Connection 4
-Saul was one of the Fixer's The Dean often contacted to contract ops to Runners. Of all the ones she worked with, he always struck her as the one who was most straight up and trustworthy. So, when she decided it was time to be a runner, he seemed a natural fit to contact. He prefers to communicate over Commlink, but when he wants to (or has to) meet in person, he prefers to do so over a pizza pie at Murphy's Law.
Al Costanzo (Club Manager, Underworld 93), Loyalty 2, Connection 3
-The manager of Underworld 93 needs no introduction. As a Ms. Johnson operating in Seattle, The Dean scheduled practically every meeting at his club. As a returning customer whose money was always good, and constant, she had good opportunity to earn the man's respect, his trust, and his ear to the ground of his shadow active club.
John Hancock (Fence, Puyallup) Loyalty 1, Connection 3
-John Hancock is the alias of a highly specialized human Fence: his area of expertise is forged documents, be it their creation and acquisition or the investigation of suspect documents. The Dean first contacted Hancock when her Cross employment ended, and the company deleted her various IDs. She paid him for new ones.
Frank Rafferty (Beat Cop, Downtown) Loyalty 4, Connection 3
-Rafferty is a human Lone Star beat cop. Rydell met him at Matchsticks. The two hit it off, and what followed was an on-again/off-again relationship that lasted a couple years. Though they have settled into a mutual friendship, The Dean has vowed not to let herself become involved with Frank again. She prefers men who won't chronically cheat on her.
Sarah "Ice" O'Riordan (Gang Member, The Ancients) Loyalty 1, Connection 2
-Ice is the 16 year old daughter of a prime runner The Dean contracted for numerous jobs during her time with Cross. When he was killed in one of The Dean's last assignments, Ice (who he had worked hard to shield from the world he lived in) became disenchanted and drifted into a life of drugs and street crime that led her to the gang. Unable to forgive herself for her part in Ice's father's death, The Dean has gone out of her way to become a mother figure to the girl, in an effort to help her from falling any farther than she already has... though Ice's resentment of her father's past employer often rises to the surface, and makes The Dean's efforts difficult.

Currently I have 10 interested players. At most I am going to take 6 or 7. So, yes you can still post a concept. But not everybody will be selected

Well, it's a matter of not being able to get to a printer to print them out and read them at my leisure. I've skimmed through it, but that's not enough to get a full understanding of things.
Let's set aside a time to talk over AIM or something to create this guy. Is there any particular day you're free to do that? Just tell me which day you want, and I'll tell you my work schedule for that day.
