Jack Stiller/Jake Styles - "Void" - Post or Die... More
=Background=
(Bull's 50+ Questions) -
1. What is your character's Sex?
Male.
2. What is your character's physical size?
Medium height for an ork but thin, with a wiry build.
3. What is the color of the character's hair, eyes, and skin?
His hair is dyed a stark white, Unkempt and spikey. His cybereyes are cyan, and sometimes he forgets to blink for too long, creeping people out. He has an old scar on his forehead.
4. What is the character's general appearance (i.e., How does he dress, etc.)?
Void usually wears business casual, but despite his nappy attire, he is still often a bit rumpled and unkempt looking.
5. Where was the character born (City, State, Hospital Name)?
Void was born in the Ork Underground, with the assistance of a midwife.
6. What is the character's date of birth?
September 13th, 2051.
7. What was the character's family life like?
Void's parents ran a thrift shop, doing a bustling business, but never quite making it out of the area - the occasional theft or act of vandalism, combined with the "protection" demanded by the local gang, kept them relatively poor. They were strict but fair parents, struggling to instill moral values in a son who saw how futile their work ethic really was.
He saw his parents' life as a trap, but trying to make it on his own didn't work out so well for him, either. He was a weak kid, picked on by others. His situation improved when he got a gun, but he was still a small-time punk, until he SURGed, and his unusual resistance to magic, and disturbing aura, caught the attention of one of the local crimelords, Mr. Biggs, who thought having an intimidating enforcer resistant to magic would be useful to him.
Mr. Biggs took Void under his wing, grooming and training him. Void took his training seriously (seeing this as his one shot to get out of his small-time loser existence), and modeled a lot of his behavior on this new father figure (trying to be better dressed, and trying to educate and better himself). Mr. Biggs was eventually killed by a rival, but Void was firmly in the ranks of the heavy hitters by then. No one since has been able to command his loyalty in more than a purely mercenary way, though.
8. Has the charcter begun his own family?
Not even. Void has chipped it, and cybered it, but his experiences with the real live thing have been rare, and usually very awkward for him.
9. Where or how was the charcter educated?
Void's was mostly home schooled by his earnest parents. He was indifferent to it, picking up the barest smattering of basic reading and writing and business math, while remaining appallingly ignorant of most other subjects.
since then, he has approached his learning with a renewed zeal, assisted by his mental enhancements. His favorite reading material is Reader's Digest, where he memorizes the Quotable Quotes and tries to Improve his Word Power. His memorization of things like Nietzche or Sun Tzu is ahead of his actual comprehension of them (think Otto from A Fish called Wanda).
10. Has the character ever done anything else for a living?
No. He was a delinquent before being groomed into a criminal enforcer.
11. What are the character's political and religious beliefs?
Void is politically cynical, and thinks it is a dog-eat-dog world where you have to struggle to fend off the rest of the pack. And being the "omega wolf" for so long has made him a bit more prone to violence when confronted by bullies.
Religiously, he is leaning towards Budhism, although he has a lot of mistaken notions about it, and mainly enjoys the meditative techniques, which he finds soothing.
12. Describe the character's moral code. Include how mercenary he is, whether or not he'll kill innocents, etc.
Void has a few lines he doesn't cross, and in general he would rather pit himself against other killers than be a bully like the ones who picked on him. But he can still turn abruptly violent when a confrontation is at an impasse.
13. What are the character's goals?
Void wants to be successful, and "respectable" (to his mind, meaning dressing fairly well and sounding educated). He wants the status symbols of success, but is driven less by greed and more by insecurity.
14. Why does the character run the shadows? (Why does he run the shadows still, rather than getting a "real" job?)
Void disdains trying to make an honest living, which basically means breaking your back only to have an oily thug extort the fruits of your toil from you, or have a dealer take your money with the self-destructive promise of escape from your dreary existence - for awhile. No... he loves his parents, but shudders at the thought of having to BE like them. His "job" is much better - excitement, power, money, and he will never be a nobody like he used to be, ever again.
15. What kind of personality does your character have? This should not necessarily be obviously stated in the background, as it is more important for actually playing the character, but it may colour or add mood to the history.
Void is someone who was bullied and picked on for his younger life, who eventually became a badass sammie. As such, he has a bottomless pool of rage to draw upon. Fortunately, his work usually gives him a controlled outlet for his violent tendencies.
His mind has been enhanced by 'ware, but it is still limited in many ways. He prefers to have other people telling him what to do, or who to kill, and is often lost without such direction (in such situations, he will tend to fall back upon violence). Also, he is good at spouting out things he has heard from other sources, but fizzles when people offer counterarguments.
He is not a complete sociopath, but he still seems a bit "off" - facial tics, manic-depressive episodes, odd little habits, and a tendency to either drone pedantically about things that he doesn't quite seem to understand (Sun Tzu quotes when they don't really apply to the situation, etc.), or to mumble incoherently.
16. What special qualities does the character possess? This does not refer to skills, but rather to other things, such as how she gets along with people, whether she plans ahead, etc.
Void is the ultimate soldier, doing whatever is asked of him.
17. Are there certain things that the character can't or won't do? Why?
Void has an inflexible outlook on things, and is not good at thinking for himself, or using critical thinking for anything beyond combat tactics. He is almost paralyzed with fear by women in anything but a purely business situation.
18. What things, people, or ideas does the character hate?
Void hates bullies, especially gangers, and people who he feels "disrespect" him. He also hates people who can out-argue him and make him feel stupid.
19. What things people, or ideas does the character love?
Void likes reading, especially if he has a chance to impress others with his knowledge. As said before, though, he doesn't always comprehend the concepts behind what he reads. He likes opinionated editorials that he agrees with, where someone else has presented all of the arguments FOR him.
20. What is the character's name? Give both full birth name, as well as nicknames, street names, etc.
His "real" name is Jack Stiller, and his fake ID lists him as Jake Styles, but Void is what he answers to now - it's not just his street name, but the symbol of his rebirth.
21. Determine what your character used to do, before becoming a shadowrunner (very important).
Void was a delinquent, then a street punk, then an underworld enforcer.
22. Decide why your character left her old job, if she had one (also important).
He was fanatically loyal to Mr. Biggs, but after Mr. Biggs died, he was floundering on his own.
23. Come up with a reason for why the character became a shadowrunner. (This very often will tie in with #22. This is not the same as #14, but rather why he started running the shadows originally. What led him to it?)
Void didn't feel the same personal loyalty to anyone else that he felt for Mr. Biggs, so he worked as a freelancer, finding that it worked out for him. He still had the structure of having a job to do, but he could turn down work that was distasteful, or beneath him.
24. How did your character come to know her contacts? Contacts are an important part of Shadowrun, decide how and why you know them.
Ivan (Armorer) is a lean, wiry dwarf with a black mohawk, a dyed crimson soul patch, and extensive tattoos. He dresses in a mix of grunge and military camo, usually with a black t-shirt with some offensive slogan or other on it. His place is nondescript, with no sign - either you know how to find him, or you don't. He usually has a bodyguard or two looming behind him, typically Russion or East European-looking; he is rumored to have ties to the Vory. Ivan is sullen, only brightening up when talking about weapons (he is biased towards European guns). He is a bit pricier than most, but is a meticulous craftsman. He also has lots of cheap use-and-lose guns, though, and is not adverse to buying hot guns; just don't expect him to pay more than beer money for them. Ivan has a fatalistic aplomb, and it is hard to shock or surprise him. He is one of the few people who does not seem to be nervous around Void.
Mick Frosser (Fixer) is a pudgy, fussily neat man with pale, slicked back hair, watery blue eyes, and a weak chin, who wears white CAS-style suits. He runs a junk shop with broken-down appliances and other stuff on display, but the back room, ostensibly where he keeps the porn, is also where you can go to fence things, or to get less-than-legal items (although Void usually winds up buying some porn, too. He's not proud). Primarily a fence, he still occasionally puts runners in touch with clients. He gives even Void the creeps, and there are several nasty rumors floating around him, but you don't always have to like them to deal with them, and Mick is a convenient and relatively reliable fence.
Loogie (Hacker) is an overweight troll who has a greasy mullet and coke bottle glasses, who can be a good source for information or the occasional judicious bit of hacking. He met Loogie at an anime convention. They get along fairly well, both being social misfits, although Void is bitter that this loser troll somehow has a hot elven chick for a girlfriend (okay, she's virtual, but even so...).
25. Does the character have a SIN? Does the character actually use it? Or is the character one of the SINless masses? This may be affected by the character's previous employment.
Void's never had a SIN
26. Is the character a full-time shadowrunner? Or does the character lead a Batman-like double existence?
Void is a full-time runner.
27. Which person(s) or group(s) do you love the most?
His overwhelming loyalty was to Mr. Biggs, once. He loves his parents, too, but doesn't ever want to BE like them.
28. Which person(s) or group(s) do you hate the most?
Gangers top the list (scummy, leeching bullies), but he doesn't like people who patronize him or make him feel stupid.
29. Which person(s) or group(s) do you respect the most?
He respects the top dogs who have gotten there by chewing up their rivals, who show some class and flair. While politically cynical, he has a grudging admiration for the take-no-prisoners, in-your-face attitude of some of the more radical meta-rights and pro-environmental groups out there.
30. Which person(s) or group(s) do you fear the most?
Women. They can always fluster him.
31. What is your favourite colour?
Angsty, gothic black.
32. What is your favourite food and/or drink?
Void is on a health kick, and is always going on (usually a bit sanctimoniously) about his protein shakes, multivitamins, and such. Occasionally, though, he will snap and go on a junk food binge at the nearest Stuffer Shack.
33. What place would you most like to visit?
He would like to visit the Seattle Aquarium or the Science Museum someday, or so he says. Truthfully, his tastes are more low-brow than he likes to admit.
34. Which person(s) or group(s) are you most loyal to?
He is loyal to teammates, but for most of them, he will still watch his back.
35. What pastime (that you participate in regularly) gives you the most enjoyment? (Warning: Answering Sex for this question can and will result in penalties to your character!)
He likes anime conventions, on-line games, and doing things that supposedly make him more refined and educated.
36. What pastime (that you participate in regularly) gives you the least enjoyment?
He doesn't like when he has to intimidate (or kill) people who aren't pros, or even muscle, but just people who got caught in the middle.
37. What annoys you the most?
People who correct his erroneous takes on philosophy, Budhism, etc.
38. What (if any) is your favourite form of art?
He enjoys classical music, and philosophy, even if he doesn't fully understand the latter. He also likes porn, but hey, it's art!
39. What is your greatest goal?
He's more or less looking out for number one at the moment, although it wouldn't be out of character for him to get swept up into a more charismatic person's personal crusade.
40. What do you think is your characters best quality?
His tenacity and drive to improve himself.
41. What do you think is your characters worst quality?
His inability to truly think for himself very much, and his inner rage.
42. What is the most important thing you have ever done?
He has done a lot of violence, but none of it really made the world a better place. The closest he came was when he killed a racist serial ork killer, but that was only because the poor sap chose the absolutely wrong victim when he tried to ambush Void in a parking lot.
43. Which religion (if any) do you follow?
He practices Budhist meditation, but hasn't adopted all of its credo (or even understood it, really).
44. What is your most treasured possession (and why)?
An anime poster (on the back wall of his closet, as it is a hentai one) signed by the voice actress.
45. What are your three most common dreams?
> In an old west town, fighting generic thugs with a pair of six-guns. Sometimes the dream is like a first-person shooter, but other times it is a nightmare, where the thugs turn into zombies or demons, and his guns inexplicably will only shoot flowers or bubbles.
> walking through a wasteland, along a cracked granite road, with poles lining the sides of the road, where various people who have annoyed him are impaled. He wakes up feeling happy and at peace.
> A porno dream, usually about some woman he was too shy and awkward to approach.
46. What is the Character's current relationship with his family?
He loves them, but thinks they are too idealistic. He visits them, and helps out with money every now and then, but they don't know what he does for a living - they think he has some suit-and-tie job.
47. If the character's family is still alive, what do they do, and where do they live?
His parents have moved up (literally) a bit - now they are running a pawn shop in Tacoma, where the gangs are more reasonable in their protection demands, and the nearby fortress-like police station keeps violent crime down, at least within those few blocks. Void worries a bit, partly because he suspected most Lone Star officers of being part-time Humanis members, and doubts Knight Errant will be any better (especially with a Humanis thug as governor now).
48. Where did the character learn his Skills?
On the streets, he learned to run and hide and shoot. Mr. Biggs refined his abilities, turning him into a combat machine (with the help of a lot of 'ware).
49. Does the character have a good luck charm? What is it, and why?
No - he has a few keepsakes from his time working for Mr. Biggs, but they are just mementos, nothing more.
50. What type of music does the character like?
Classical (a taste he got from Mr. Biggs), although he likes brainless pop music too. He doesn't like the harder "gansta" stuff, although he can tolerate it (at a club, etc.).
51. List any past serious relationships that your character has had, and give a brief overview of the relationship.
None, really. He's still too messed up for that to work that well, at this point.
52. Where does your character live? Why does he live there?
Void lives in a semi-renovated Brownstone just outside of Loveland, and tries to keep his biz far away from it. His apartment is a bit spartan, but obsessively neat (the housekeeping bot does a good job, although it occasionally gets stuck in a corner and has to be nudged out).
53. Remember, your Gamemaster like detail, so if you can think of any other little details, quirks, or whatever that you think might please the almight GM, then add them in as well. Oh, and your GM won't use any of these details against you at a later date. trust me...
Void is more or less muscle, although he is capable of working covert operations. He is a bit "off", but still capable of being a team player.
