Arthur Pendington was born on the 16th of November 1835, in a difficult childbirth which resulted in his mother's death. His father having died earlier in service to Her Magesty's Armed Forces, he was raised on a distant aunt's estate, though not by her and only until such time as he was old enough to be sent to boarding school. Fortunately his family's wealth and been placed in the hands of ethical and sensible men and he was able to attend one of the finest schools in Oxford.
He had always been intelligent, but it wasn't until his was 15, when he attended The Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851, that he became truly enchanted with all things scientific and technological. Prior to this he had been concentrating on finance and economics, money being the one true consolation in his life.
He was accepted into Oxford University, where he met his good friend George Colthurst St. Barleigh. An equally bright individual, though less analyitcal and more 'creative' in his approach to the sciences, he and Arthur complimented each other well and had soon earned several degrees between them and been offered professorships at the university.
Arthur had found himself concentrating human augmentation (cybernetics), seeing it as the ultimate manifestation as man as a tool-using animal and made several breakthroughs in the field, but had delved into many other areas of study, thinking of himself as a renaisance man. This was due largely to a fascination with the work of Leonardo DaVinci he developed after George had convinced him there was more to scince than mere formulae and equations.
Unfortunately, during an experiment involving smaller more efficient steam engines, using more energy efficient substance than regular water under higher pressures, there was an accident. The boiler ruptured, super heated steam and liquid killing George, several lab assistants, and disfiguring Arthur, removing his left arm and leg and scarring the rest of his body. Rather than mourning in the usual way as most people would, he began to obsess over the accident. Wracked with guilt he went over the equations over and over again, to see where he went wrong, he was sure the boiler was strong enough, certain of it, and he couldn't find anything to suggest otherwise. Many of his peers considered this behaviour distasteful enough, but when he began making claims that the accident MUST have been the result of sabotage, accusing rivals in the Thaumaturgy Department whom he'd often berating as being panderers of parlour tricks and superstition, not real scientist at all, he was thrown out of Oxford and largely ostricised by the scientific community.
He now lives in a large apartment in London (most of which as been given over to all manner of scientific equipment), continuing various research funding himself largely on contracts from organisations wishing to avoid public scrutiny, occoasionaly even the military, or people wanting equipment they couldn't otherwise aquire either for reasons of legality or specificity. His background in cybertechnology meant he was easily able to over come his disabilty with a new arn and leg (Ironically, his body reacted adversely to the implants and even made him more supsceptable to disease. This ofcourse proves his belief that humans are weak, the solution being to make better implants.), but his torso is still badly scarred and he has been renderred impotent. Though his new limbs funtion perfectly, he tends to put on an unatural stiffness when in publis and carries a walking stick, which his actually a cleverly disguised stun baton. He tends to dress smartly wearing brown suits and coats, with an overcoat, and almost always wears gloves to cover his artificial hand. He still has visible scarring on the left side of his face and neck, even behind his round dark tinted glasses.

*Think the Benjamin Franklin glasses from National Treasure.
**Wind speed/direction gauges, barometric pressure gauges, a
Tempest Prognosticator, that sort of stuff.
I *THINK* that's everything done. It's a pity the only vehicle I wanted doesn't exsist, which is probably good since I think I'd need to redo my skills just to use it.
