Leo--The character sheet looks fine...do you have a character who is more of a team player though? Jaron would have a problem hiring a short term replacement who is just going to cause trouble...
Leowulf
Dec 8 2004, 06:08 AM
Well, Ghost Dragon is much more of a team player than you might think.
I do have a couple of concepts in the works. Their basic stuff is picked out, and adding in the 125 karma and 56,000

wouldn't be too hard. I'll send you both of them. They don't have bios because they are only concepts at this point.
What, specifically, would you like to see?
BishopMcQ
Dec 8 2004, 03:57 PM
I'm open, it's just that two other team members have commented on how non-team oriented Ghost Dragon is... That said, Jaron is probably going to hire a mage or decker to bolster numbers at the moment.

I've FINALLY finished picking out all the stuff for a new character. No bio, but here is a brief summary of the concept.
The guy is a Ph.D. in Magic who teaches part-time at a university somewhere, probably Texas A&M&M. Went into shadowrunning for research on magic. Is part of a magical group of other acadmics. Quickening, Anchoring, and Invoking with heavy emphasis on Magical skills, including Aura Reading. Not a particularly violent guy, but... I am, so we'll see how that goes. This guy actually prefers NOT to kill unless he has to, but I just couldn't give him the Pacifist flaw, since self defense might not be the only circumstance. I like to have the option.
I'll ask OOC before I have him kill someone because he's not as impulsive as Biomage. He's a more mellow guy, so he probably won't talk as much, and he'll actually care what others think.
One thing I'll be interested in trying with him is zipping over to a badguy with Levitate and either disarming them and asking why they are being hostile, or just dropping a grenade at their feet. Both have enjoyable aspects.

Leo--That character sheet has a few little problems, utilities higher than the MPCP of the deck, exclusive spells can't be stored in Foci but overall looks fine from my cursory glance.
Team--What's the plan? What are you doing?

Doh! I forget about those simple rules sometimes.
I'll fix it and resend it. Any other issues I should correct?
Let's gently remove Biomage from the picture by sending him home and introduce a new character for me. I finished the bio. -->

Biography, using “Twenty Questions”, Shadowrun, 2nd edition.
Donovan Kess is a male human who stands 6’4” tall (1.93 m) and has a medium build. He weighs about 200 pounds (91 kg). He has pinkish red skin, white hair, and a pair of cybereyes that are all black with light brown irises. His white hair is worn trimmed short and combed back. Donovan typically stands erect. He doesn’t look especially intimidating. Donovan has a nice figure and complexion, which makes him look somewhat attractive. Clothes look at least as good on him as they do on mannequins in the store, and he typically wears either fine clothing or tres chic. Someone meeting him for the first time might think he is someone important.
Donovan was born in Tallahassee, Florida on September 4, 1996. He grew up in the sunny climate there, and had plenty of opportunities to go to the beach and tour the attractions in the region. Donovan grew up in an upper middle class family. His magical ability was discovered early on in a corporate-sponsored test screening at his high school. That same year, he was enrolled in a weekend training program sponsored by Ares Macrotechnology to foster young magical talent and groom it to work for the corporation.
Being as old as he is, Donovan saw it all as the Sixth World arrived on the nightly news. The only thing that really got to him was the downing of Flight 329 on its way from London to Atlanta because it was fairly close to where he had grown up. His family and friends back home had much the same reaction. Being part of a private mage training program one day a week helped him cope with the world’s Awakening, and having a job in the field made it even easier.
Donovan’s father was a marketing expert for a local subcorporation in Florida that was based out of Kissimee/Orlando. Their main business area was tourism. Donovan’s mother was a flight attendant for Delta, and later, she quit and went to work as a concierge for one of the Walt Disney Resort Hotels. The family’s income came from his mother and father’s work combined. His father earned more than his mother, but not enough to support the family on his own.
Donovan’s family life was pretty peaceful. His mother and father got along well, and aside from his mother being gone a lot, things were fine. He had two younger sisters. The youngest one has a professional career in marketing. The older one is a travel agent that helps book tourist packages for Disney from their main office. His parents are now both retired. Donovan keeps in touch with his family regularly, and he goes to visit on the holidays.
Donovan has never started his own family because his career got in the way, and he has never been able to find the right woman. Up until recently, Donovan thought he might have been too old to worry about starting a family, but since he has quickened a spell to increase his Body attribute, he has had more energy and felt more like doing things.
Donovan was educated publicly up through high school. His high grades earned him a scholarship from Ares to the Magical Sciences study program of his choice. Donovan chose to go to Texas A&M&M, where he finished his master’s degree. He learned a lot at the university, and then even more as a wage mage for Ares. He started teaching part-time at Texas A&M&M about 8 years ago, and he has just recently both retired from Ares and finished up his doctorate in Magical Sciences. The latter 4 years of his education he paid for out of his own pocket. He has also recently started learning the arts of swordsmithing and sword fighting. After retiring from Ares, he also helped start a magical group called the Society for Academic Magical Research (SAMR), based at Texas A&M&M.
While he enjoyed working as a mage for Ares, he would probably not go back. After doing the same thing for some 40 years, he decided that with his retirement date coming up, it was time for a change of pace. He continues teaching part-time at Texas A&M&M, and he is waiting for a full professorship to open up, so he can take it. The only way that Donovan would go back to being a wage mage for a few more years is if teaching didn’t work out, and he needed the money.
Donovan doesn’t concern himself with religious matters much anymore. He believes in God, but exactly what God is is open to debate in his mind, given all of the strange and unexplained paranormal things he has seen and learned about over the course of his life. He is agnostic. Donovan was raised a Catholic. His family still practices.
According to Donovan’s moral code, killing in cold-blood, or murder, is wrong. Under some circumstances, killing is justified, but he will usually try to consider his options before killing a person or critter. Self-defense killing is justified if it’s the only way to get an attacker to stop. He favors capital punishment for convicted murderers, is pro-choice, and is neutral on euthanasia. Donovan’s sexual ethics code is loosely interpreted. He doesn’t have any qualms about pre-marital sex. Certain deviant sexual behaviors are completely out of the question. As a professor, he has had to turn down his share of seductive young coeds, but there were two occasions with two different particularly attractive young female students that he never mentions when he didn’t turn down their affections. So far, no one has found out about them. Both girls got ‘A’s because he felt a little bad later.
Donovan’s goal is to enjoy the time he has left in life and to try and make a lasting contribution to the world. By shadowrunning and teaching, he hopes to be able to either make some profound discovery or do some good in the world before his time is up. He also enjoys the thrill of the risk involved in shadowrunning.
As a person, Donovan tends to be a bit of a moderate. He has some radical political ideas, but he doesn’t act on them. He tends to be easy-going and extroverted, though not to any extreme. As a person with intellect, he is able to easily think rationally and ask intelligent questions. One of his talents is thinking analytically.
One of Donovan’s talents is getting along with people. He is sort of easy to like, and he usually just lets people be themselves, which makes others comfortable around him. There aren’t many things he has trouble doing. He hates bullies and people who think they’re better than everyone else. He loves life and experiencing new things. The beach is close to his heart, since he spent a lot of time there as he was growing up. Nice views, quiet times, loud music of all kinds, art, and a sense of accomplishment are all things he loves.
When running the shadows, Donovan uses his real name, Donovan Kess, which is the same one he was born with. He sees no reason to hide his identity, so he doesn’t. Sometimes, he introduces himself as Dr. Kess; sometimes Donovan; sometimes Donovan Kess; sometimes Dr. Donovan Kess. It depends on whom he is talking to at the time.

Sounds right. Biomage has no idea what is going on right now. Donovan (new char) hasn't even been called.
It might be faster if everyone plans OOC and then the GM fast forwards the IC.

I thought we went to the safehouse so the whole team could talk and figure out what our next move will be.

Dec 24 2004, 02:05 AM
My presumption is that Jack wanted to talk to the Fool more lucidly which had only happened when you were in the matrix before. Other than that, I can only guess at other subjects that Fenris wanted data searches run on etc.

McQuillan was correct. The only time the Fool doesn't talk in riddles is in the Matrix. My intention was to ask him directly all those odd questions we've been tossing around, like what, exactly, he thinks we're dealing with, what kind of resources we have, etc.
Anyone have any objections to this?

Leo--It's time....I need some info about where you are staying in Tokyo and your lifestyle.
Leowulf
Jan 14 2005, 10:22 AM
Well, Donovan actually lives in Houston, Texas, USA.
I suppose he could be vacationing or attending a conference that has just ended in Tokyo. If that were the case, he would be at an upscale hotel. Maybe a little too coincidental, but it could just happen to be the same one that Jaron is at..
I don't have any problem flying him from Texas.
I was looking over the legality of a Claymore though. Do you think it would be better to go with something a little smaller?
BishopMcQ
Jan 14 2005, 06:05 PM
Something smaller would make it easier to conceal...
Leowulf
Jan 15 2005, 03:56 AM
How about a Combat Axe instead? It's from the same weapon class, so no skill changes are needed. It costs 500 less and has a Concealability of 2 instead of 0.
BishopMcQ
Jan 15 2005, 05:55 AM
It's all your choice, just remember the concealability and legality when you try to carry it around.
Leowulf
Jan 15 2005, 08:26 PM
I think I'll have the combat axe instead. None of the melee weapons are legal, but having the axe under a coat (The Merlin) will at least make it less noticeable (Concealability 3) than a 5-foot sword that just can't be hidden.
Whizbang
Jan 15 2005, 08:33 PM
Though it has alot less style...
Leowulf
Jan 16 2005, 02:28 AM
Yeah..
Sorta sucks.
Fenris
Jan 16 2005, 04:19 AM
So the question at this point is, do you go with style over substance, ala Cyberpunk?
Or go professional and efficient (well, as professional and efficient as a giant bladed combat can be)?
Leowulf
Jan 17 2005, 02:21 PM
I'd prefer style, however above all else, I prefer pragmatism. Therefore, a careful balance between style and efficiency must be achieved. I had wanted to carry the claymore around in a plastic case resembling an instrument case and tell people it was a bassoon or something, but the rules say that the claymore has no concealability. Such a thing would be up to GM discretion. The combat axe can achieve the same damage level as the claymore with only 1 less to the power of each attack.
The advantage to its being smaller is that it can be somewhat hidden, and people, law enforcement officials in particular, won't always be wondering, "What's in the case?" They make sheathes for axes. Such sheathes consist of a leather bag for the handle to fit into, and they may also include a pouch at the top to cover the blade. Typically, they are worn at the hip. I've been busy thinking up a description for the axe to replace the rather cool one I came up with for the claymore.
I think I'll have Donovan make both eventually, so then he can carry whichever one seems to best fit the location he will be working in. Did you know that Tokyo is considered one of the safest cities in the world (Travel Channel)? Carrying the axe and trying to hide it seems to make more sense because I'm afraid the police would have a real problem with Donovan brandishing a weapon out in the open.
What do you think McQuillan? Is your opinion still the same as before? Would you allow the instrument case idea? I'm thinking 2 Complex Actions to remove the case, set it onto the ground, and open it. Then, a standard Simple Action to pull out the sword and get it ready for use. We could make that last bit another Complex Action to close and pick back up the case to put it across his back. The case has a long strap that can be worn across the chest.
BishopMcQ
Jan 17 2005, 03:21 PM
I'm always open to innovative ideas to solve problems. Go with a carrying case if you'd like, it may not work in all occurrences, but you'll be able to carry the sword with you some places.
Fenris
Jan 17 2005, 05:39 PM
McQuillan, sounds like everybody's up for the paydata stuff. Do you want to use the optional rules for just making rolls for paydata, or actually rp the runs and such? I just worry it might get boring for the non-Matrix type characters.
Buddha72
Jan 17 2005, 05:51 PM
As one of the non-matrix types I am fine with you all doing something (should McQuillan want to) more RPing. I knew when I signed up this was a matrix heavy and focused thread so no problems at my end.
Leowulf
Jan 18 2005, 03:36 AM
Ok. I'm going with the carrying case idea for the Claymore.
I've got an idea on how to raise some money, at least for my character. He just needs to find a buyer for any excess orichalcum he has. Of course, now that I think about it, if we have the time and the resources, a non-matrix partition of the game in which we try to make foci for members of the team who want them could be fun.
