$30 pledged the moment I heard it'd gone live. No, not much ... but I've just made a big purchase, which requires a bit of belt-tightening to refill my savings and stay on-target for two big expenses in 2014 and 2015.

I also pitched $30. It's over twice as good as $15. None of the other kick-knacks interest me until $500+.
Which I definitely should not be spending.
(Interestingly, there's a reward for 6 months premium, the next one up gets the same 6 months, and the next one gets two years...makes me wonder if that middle one is supposed to have a year in it)

I know of several decent or even quite good f2p MMOs (DDO, DCUO, Guild Wars, to name a few). Why would being browser based or kickstarted be bad?
It's a matter of execution that makes for a good game, not the choice of the platform the developers choose to deliver it on.

An opposing opinion: A Free 2 Play [F2P] (good) browser based (good) Massively Multiplayer (good) is using Kickstarter (good). We would be fools not to get behind this in a big, bad way.
F2P means longevity. Browser based means accessibility. Massively Mulitplayer means we get to play together and its persistent. And Kickstarter means this isn't as big and as bad as it could be unless we say so together, as a crowd, that this is something we want to be patrons of, showing just how strong this IP is when treated with respect (as Primetide has demonstrated, we were among the first he came to visit to discuss their proposal with) and passion as shown in their carefully considered artwork and integration of familiar mechanics that we appreciate. They have demonstrated a proof of concept beyond a doubt with Jagged Alliance Online, which also indicates they will handle premium content with the appropriate subtlety that will retain the pretty much permanently Free players as a viable player base for the Premium players to have a more entertaining experience with and not at the expense of others. And they have the license already negotiated.

As for why Kickstart? Simple... It gives them the ability to release a much deeper game more quickly, and/or not rely on the usual sources of investment/funding (which could possibly come with the risk of project oversite, ala Publishers).
Again, Kickstarter is not pure charity. It's closer to a preorder. You almost always get SOMETHING for your dollars. It's up to you to decide if that something is worth the dollars, though.

The Question this time around ain't WHY so much as WHY NOW Bull.
They could have and probably should have done it weeks, maybe months ago.
Look at how much success Wasteland 2 and SRR had on there, they could and probably should have used the hype for their own publicity.
Maybe then they'd have a bit more of a Following. Not many people know about the SRO MMO AT ALL.

THIS project, SRO, is a PERFECT example of what a kickstarter should be. As a person who will happily ear bash people with all the reasons kickstarter is bad (it's a case by case thing, some kickstarters are little more than charity at best and scams at worst), I urge anyone who enjoys Shadowrun and MMO's to back this.

^^^ This. ^^^
I pledged $100 to Wasteland 2. I then pledged $60 to SRR.
My budget allows me to spend $300 on myself, no questions asked. I save HALF of that for future big purchases (like the new Notebook I'm posting from right now - or spending $$ and a new camera for the WDW trip we're planning to go on in early 2014, or the new bleeding-edge gaming desktop I plan to buy sometime in 2015 ...). So that represented quite a chunk of change for me to offer up, in a relatively short span of time.
If SRO had been on Kickstarter at the same time, I wouldn't have been able to offer them $30. Not without lowering my pledge toone or both of the others - which would have taken it away from SRR, because, sorry too bad Wasteland got $100 the second I heard there would BE a kickstarter. The only delay in pledging that, was the time it took for me to type in the URL. If made to choose between Shadowrun and Wasteland ... "sorry chummer, you lose" .... Wasteland every time, by a mile.

And in fact, if SRR's kickstarter hadn't overlapped Wasteland 2's, I would have pledged even more to SRR. Those dog-tag USB memory sticks would have been very happily welcomed by me.
But I just couldn't afford it. And SRO got only $30 from me, because I'm STILL seeing ripples spread from the other two kickstarter pledges I made (other purchases got delayed, etc).
Waiting a bit, JUST a bit, will probably get them more $$ than jumping into the middle of a frenzy would have.

Who says that an MMO requires that a mission need
twenty four people? For Shadowrun to work properly, it'd have to be no more than six. Small teams for easy coordination.
Though I'd allow options for people to create larger groups if they so desired, within reason. The security on the target would scale in response to more players though, so it wouldn't necessarily be the
best plan.
(Offhand: figure 4 minimum, if the players are appropriately leveled/skilled, 6 typical and expected, but allow up to 8, above that the group can easily be split into two; you have no idea how often I'd wanted to join up with friends for a game of L4D, LoL, Borderlands...only to be the Fifth Guy, the guy who can't play because there are too many. Allowing the group size to fluctuate slightly depending on how many a group of friends can get together is perfect).
Of course, a dearth of single-player missions will be needed as well. When I play MMOs these days, it's often on a trial basis ("free play weekend") and don't generally know anyone else who can find the time when I can find the time.
