Everything has its place, the problem is that marketing is aiming at Consoles almost solely now, with PC games being a port from a console-designed title.

I'm happy to see Kickstarter going, "Frag that!" and bringing PC back! With Mac and Linux support, to boot!

Updated the backer rewards - so many character portraits to choose from, so many awesome characters we wanted to immortalise...but in the end, it was R4tH, the hacker and general creepy bastard that's rewarded the Kickstarter on behalf of Red Seven Security Concepts

Steam solved an entire "problem" for them with existing tech. That problem was "how do we provide a searchable, safe repository of community-generated content for our fans?" The solution was, "the Steam Workshop."
Oh, Steam is no doubt the easiest platform, and putting a game on the most widespread platform makes perfect sense from an economic POV. But after they already make the game for half a dozen platforms and distribution systems, they could have gone the extra mile and added a fully functional version over a Steam alternative.
It's certainly not something to bitch about and demand your money back, but after all the talk about the joys of going independent it would have been nice to provide a full alternative for those who like to keep the number of eggs in the Steam basket small.

isn't steam trying to port everything to Linux ? as well as having OSX titles ?
and I see it as a VERY astute move to use "the peoples" channel to distribute your wares rather than either selling out to a publishing house OR trying to do it yourself and incurring massive costs and runnign the risk of it massively failing on day one !

Honestly the main draw to SR:R for me was the tablet option. I don't use my laptop for playing games (I used to play WoW on it, but got very tired of that game). I find the idea if a single player game on my portable device to be refreshing. When I want to play games or watch movies/TV I fire up my PS3. The only thing my PC sees for work now is email and P&P Shadowrun. I'll still create a Steam account and install my "free" backer copy of SR:R but I really don't know how much play it'll get. I'll probably play with the editor a bit though.
I really don't have room in my house for a full-on computer desk for game playing, and I find the chairs to be uncomfortable. Meh.
Still looking forward to June.

Get a lap desk, and a wireless KB+M setup. Hook the PC to your big TV. Play from the comfort of your couch.

This is more-or-less what I was doing with WoW. But using the keyboard is very uncomfortable in this position. I used a multi-button controller in my left hand and mouse in my right, both positioned on the arms of my recliner. It does work well, but the touch display on my tablet is much better and more comfortable.
Gaming on a PC means spending as much on the game system as I could on a used car. For that kind of money I'd rather travel than play a game. My laptop + PS3 + tablet cost less than most "gaming" desktops. Besides HDTV's have such low resolutions compared to even my laptop monitor, really not a great place to play PC-based games.

My HDTV just gives people a way to enjoy my games a lot better than I can.

I have to suffer with just a monitor.

You drive some awful, awful used cars. Like 600 clunkers.
A good, solid gaming PC does NOT cost thousands of dollars, or even one thousand.

Truth. While yes, you
can spend a tremendous amount of money on a computer (like I did), you don't HAVE to, tohave a machine capable of playing most games, at modest graphics settings.
On another forum I specced out a pretty decent machine - not bleeding edge, but reasonably-good for games if you don't mind the graphics being tuned to 4 or 5 (out of 10). Came to about $500, sans monitor. And not one piece of it was used, second-hand, or off-brand/garbage, either. Give me a few, and I'll try and track that post down, for a bit of cut-and-paste magic.

Aha. Here we go; the original post is here:
http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?2...376#post2831376In brief:
XFX branded Radeon HD 5450
Intel Core i3, 3.1GHz dual-core
4GB f Kingston RAM
250GB HDD from WD
80+ certified 600W Silverstone PSU (possibly more than needed *shrug*)
DVD drive
Thermaltake case and a few extra fans
.... that came to just under $500. Add $100 for an OS, then another ... $50, let's say, for a good Wireless KB+M.
...
And while I'm (still) not up to assembling something myself, that's not a horribad shopping list AFAIK.

Not for an entry-level gaming PC, for sure.

Looks like a decent system, and a fair price. I have built a PC from ground up (big box-o-parts into a working model). I just don't consider myself a video gamer anymore. I'm someone who enjoys playing games sometimes, but not a gamer.
Maybe that's why I like my PS3 for games so much. Turn it on, play, turn it off, go outside (uhoh... outside... what's that!?!

)
Thanks for all the input guys. I'll be doing the Steam thing (sigh), but I'll probably buy another copy from the Play Store and play most of the time on my tablet.

As for people screaming FOUL because of Steam:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/161326...ns/posts/453037QUOTE
• To reiterate, our Backers don’t have to choose a DRM-free version of the game or a Steam version of the game. You get both.
• Backers who want a DRM-free experience with Shadowrun Returns (on Windows, OSX, and Linux) are getting the game, editor and all, and will be able to transfer community-created story files and update executables manually. (It works just like a non-Steam version of Skyrim: you can install mods manually or via a 3rd-party tool such as Nexus.) The DRM-free version will not require any internet connection or any form of online authorization to play. In addition, Backers who like the convenience and reliability of Steam and who want automatic updates, easy-to-browse content, and a DLC store are getting them.
• We said that post-Berlin Campaign DLC would only be available on Steam but we never said why. We regret the omission. The reason is that our license to develop Shadowrun Returns actually requires that the game and its DLC be distributed under DRM. This didn’t come up earlier because the situation was complicated by the number of parties involved in the license and because the process was “ongoing”. Ultimately, we were able to successfully negotiate an exception with Microsoft for us to provide our Backers with a DRM-free version of the Kickstarter rewards (specifically the game and the Berlin Campaign) but that exception does not extend to non-reward DLC. So unfortunately, we cannot sell or give away DRM-free versions of the game or DLC on stores like GoG, and that’s why any future Shadowrun Returns DLC will only be available for purchase on Steam.
• We will be updating/bugfixing the DRM-free versions (Windows, OSX, and Linux) of Shadowrun Returns, maintaining them along with the Steam versions. These updates will require Backers to re-download the game from the Harebrained Account Website, since it will not include auto-patching functionality
Sengir
Apr 13 2013, 01:34 AM
Important part: The license requires the game to be distributed with DRM, the backer rewards (and only those, not any further DLC) are an exception. Though I reserve the right to believe they did not just take so long to spill the beans because "the number of parties involved in the license and because the process was 'ongoing'"

On the plus side, manual mod sharing/installation is confirmed.

Read the FAQ too.
Backers get at least 3 Steam Keys for both the Game and the Berlin DLC.
_Pax._
Apr 13 2013, 03:45 AM
To be fair ... no, we probably get only one KEY. But, that single key will give us ownership of all three versions of the game - PC, Mac, and Linux.
That's how it works for at least one game I already own - Civ IV (and it's various iterations). I bought just the PC version, but I also got the Mac version as well.
