Jordan Weisman made an awesome comment about that recently:
http://www.chud.com/141318/mcp-interview-j...returns-part-1/Anyone who thinks that Shadowrun couldn't or shouldn't be a FPS or other action title is just being plain silly: Shadowrun is not close to "pure" in the types of games it's been in its lifetime, from tabletop RPG, to tabletop minis game, to collectible card game, to two different styles of computer RPG/adventure games, to more editions of the RPG, and to the card and board games coming up soon, plus the two new computer games.
Shadowrun is a mutt, and it's a pity the FPS didn't fit in better, setting-wise, because being an action game wasn't the problem.
The reason we don't count it as a SR game isn't because it was bad or an FPS (although it was both of those) but rather because it didn't have the background behind it. I've said for years that Shadowrun could make for a great Tactical FPS like Rainbow Six: Raven Shield.

Well... would be great, I would really love to work on something like that. Sadly, as far as I know, Microsoft still holds the exclusive rights, for anything, that is Shadowrun and fps like. They never really did anything with that licence... (no, don't say it... let's stick with never, please).

Reminds me--even though it shouldn't--of my board game design group. The six of us started with Velociraptor! Cannibalism! and have been joking about making a game called "Box of Knives."* Which would actually just be a box full of knives with reviews like "actually dangerous" and "No." The next game we put out is going to have the phrase "From the five remaining members of Velociraptor! Cannibalism! and Box of Knives comes [name of game]," just to screw with people. (There are only five of us now: we bought out the sixth fellow, who was happy to take the money and not have the stress, but the phrasing would make it sound like we either stabbed him or fed him to dinosaurs).
*No, this is not a real game. It's just a joke. We've talked about staging the design of it at Global Game Jam where we disappear into a room for "play testing" and then one fewer people come back out.

This was likely done to keep things simpler. It also provides room to grow and add new toys in future expansions.
But, also keep in mind the game takes place sometimes in 2054. Bioware was still pretty uncommon, and a lot of cyberware we take for granted wasn't out yet. Shadowtech is December 2052, Fields of Fire is '55, and Cybertechnology is '56, so gear from the latter two books hasn't even been introduced into the timeline yet.
QUOTE
Essence isn't in the game
It is, actually. I'm not certain what effect it has on magic, as I haven't tried mixing the two yet, but you do have an essence score, and it limits how much 'ware you can get.
QUOTE

From a gameplay standpoint, not sure how this is a bad thing. I kinda get it from a tabletop RP viewpoint, but... Keep in mind that this game here is likely going to reach a MUCH larger audience than the tabletop game will. And hell, both the SNES game and the original Secrets of Power tilogy had it's main character become a shaman sometime after the story starts. So there's a precedent already set here for both tabletop AND videogames.

Gah! Plans were made for socializing after work that I can't avoid!!! NOOOOOOO!
I have read some reviews, seems pretty positive so far and I am super amped once some of the awesome modders out there get their hands on the system.
I did see from reviews and most from the comments sections that the checkpoint saves is considered a "major flaw" and "game breaker" for many. WTF is with gamers these days?
I cut my video game teeth on games like Wizardry where if you didn't think to make a separate save ON A FLOPPY DISK and your party died... well, you can still rescue them if you level up a new party else, sorry chummer.
Or Ghosts and Goblins, oh the horrors. Actually, I don't think I even managed to finish that one completely.
That said, losing 15 minutes of awesome gameplay because i have to leave suddenly? Yeah, for me a non issue.
Also I'm really, really really really excited.

I'm taking a flight through 3 timezones tomorrow. What I would really like to do is get the DRM free backer version of the game installed on my Laptop so I can play it on the flight, but I don't seem to be able to get through to the Harebrained Scheme website. Scuttlebutt is that it saves on loading screens, so you'll probably have to let me know since I don't get to download for another 2.5 hours. Hopefully the internets will be less broken by then.

quick save is a feature you expect in an RPG, we've had it before with similar titles and the reason it's not included is... well odd, these things can be modded/patched however...

I can't really comment on Wizardry since that's before my time, but the comparison is not really valid G'n'G is a fairly short game with limited lives, SRR is an RPG with buttloads of dialogue, where decisions can change the outcomes of hours of play (which you can't know beforehand) Would you like to tackle Baldurs gate or Dragon age without quick save?

I generally didn't quicksave Baldur's gate. I usually just saved at loading screens and didn't bother with saving between. Yeah sometimes it got tedious before big battles, but really didn't bother me. I played Dragon age on a console and am pretty sure I didn't bother saving all that much either.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
