And if that isn't the archetypical Shadowrun movie, what is? An ex-merc is hired to rescue a Rockergirl ex-girlfriend from a streetgang, complete with cheesy 80's music (covers of old Meatloaf numbers). Damn, I love that movie...

There's some great songs in that movie!

Although most of the soudtrack was written by Jim Steinman, who is Meatloaf's main (and best) songwriter, none of those songs had been performed by the Big Guy™ previous to the film's release. I'm not as sure about afterwards, but I know I haven't seen Meatloaf doing any of them in all the shows I've witnessed. He's definitely never recorded any of them.

Definitely up there with my favorite movies, and well worth checking out if you haven't done so.

Not one song is from any of Meatloaf's albums. You can check his discography
here.
They definitely
sound like Meatloaf's stuff, but that is because
Jim Steinman has a distinctive writing style.
Even then, only two songs on the
soundtrack were written by Jim ...
Nowhere Fast and
Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young. Both of these songs were performed by a band called
Fire Inc., and neither were ever performed by Meatloaf. Other songs on the soundtrack were done by
The Fixx,
Ry Cooder, and
The Blasters, as you can see from the link(s) above.

Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs (stylistically, he borderline plagerizes QT) both do the time displacement thing better, hell Kubrick did it first (?) with The Killing. The stereotypes in the film can be seen in pretty much any action/gangster film ever made. If you need good stereotype movies, you can fall back on Goodfellas, Casino, Once Upon a Time in America to name a few. Almost any John Woo action flick, but namely (Hong Kong Face Off, A Better Tomorrow, or Bloodshed of Two Heros) give not only satisfying gunplay, but better slow-mo... which is quickly becoming a virgin filmmaker's hallmark.
Perhaps I was expecting too much out of it, but I felt like I watched it with as open a mind as I do any other film. Mainly, the insanely heavy use of cliches and painful script made me yawn. I wanted smarter feds (jesus those guys were stupid)... like Silence of the Lambs. Natural Born Killers did a far better job at telling the story of the "divinely" appointed killers to their charge. Yes, polar opposites as far as characters go, but very similar in design.
There are moments that BS made me chuckle, but putting up with average acting, mediocre script, average editing, and forced cinematography and the whole thing just felt like Duffy was trying too hard. Thematically, its been done before, but with more pinasche (sp?). And what the hell was Ron Jeremy doing in it?! I don't feel that I'm 'whack' because I didn't like the blenderized version of PulpGoodHongWooSilenceKillers.

Now, dicks have drive and clarity of vision, but they're not clever. They smell p----- and they want a piece of the action. And you thought you smelled some good old p----, and you've brought your two small mincey f----- balls along for a good old time. But you've got your parties mangled up. There's no p---- here, mate. Just a dose that'll make you wish you were born a woman. Like a prick, you're having second thoughts. You're shrinking, and your two little balls are shrinking with ya. The fact that you've got "Replica" written down the side of your gun and the fact that I've got 'Desert Eagle .50' written on the side of mine, should precipitate your balls into shrinking, along with your presence. Now... Fuck off!"
