Nearly all of the homes have some sort of security system. The roving patrols transmit as well. It seems the Eagle is the main provider for this area with few exceptions. Some digging into the more secure houses shows that they use a similar frequency , for another company. Unknown which at this time.

The area is well lit. Many places have animals. Certainly more than in Seattle. The place really would be difficult to infiltrate without professional skills, or very good mojo. One thing that does stand out on close inspection however, as it is seen commonly in many sprawls, but less so here, are a number of surveillance cams on many light posts. By looking over the areas that would be appropriate for sitting a vehicle out of site, but within range of the Johnson's home, each of those areas should be covered by a camera. On closer inspection, they are.
rob
Review of the security system shows that I'm not going to get that close discreetly, or, at least, not in the hour and a half of darkness I have left. The cameras on the light posts and the home security systems aren't that much of a threat to me, but the dogs are, especially given what I probably smell like right now...

And, simply put, if I could infiltrate the perimeter someone with more prep time could as well. I'm beginning to realize that with a trail this cold, even if I could figure out the modus operandi of the breakout all that would tell us is how squared away the perpetrators are; not who they are.

So, the next obvious step is the security company. While Magpye is having his snit-fit and the wizkids are playing around with their mojo, I'm a guessin' that I'll get to look into that one. But for now, back to the truck for a triple-S and to get the peoples to their next magical escapade.

Hike up my rucksack, lace up my boots, and hump it back to the van. I'm a little bit dejected that the search didn't provide instant gratification, so I decide to be all annoyingly chipper when I barge into the van, grab the shower bag, and "accidentally" wake up Eyes...

Aiden gets Caliph's text during one of his return trips to his body, weary from his day of scouting the area and checking for astral trails and impressions. Noting the areas of interest on Caliph's map, he checks a few off as areas he has already gone, raises a curious eyebrow to some of the others, but otherwise sets them all to memory before typing out a response to Caliph and whisking his astral form back out into the ether of the night.

{@Caliph[Eyes]: Noted on those coordinates, checking them now.}

Nix: Friday April, 13th; 07:00 - Eunoch, U Answer

Nix awake early, the anticipation of the day sending goosebumps up his arm. He went upstairs and out the back door to see the sunrise. Such a beautiful day. Too bad there will probably be blood before the sun sets again....

He grabbed breakfast at a nearby cafe and met Aiden to prepare for the ritual. Nix is quiet during the preparations. So much rides on this. Casting higher than I've ever cast.. More spirit aid and no supporting mages..... Nix was a little fearful of the possible effects to himself as much as everything else.

Before settling in to begin the ritual, his final instructions to Aiden are, "It is more important that we stop whoever did this crime.." He then calls each of his bound spirits, causing the very air to ripple from the sheer number of presences in astral space. He directs the air elementals to assist him with the spell and the spirit of man to assist Aiden in tracking.
rob
When I get into the vehicle and get my morning rituals completed, I drive back to Salt Lake City and drop Eyes off at the shop. Give them the hi-howya-doins and the Ma'salaamas and stuff, and get on the road to start rolling back towards Johnson's area.

Pull off in a gas station and refuel, gripe about the prices. Drive down the road a bit, pull off in a rest stop and send an encrypted message to Johnson: <<Anonymous (Caliph): I'm done with my initial search of your area. I will need to meet you at the same place as last time at some point; contact me when it is convenient. I will also be speaking to the local security forces. If you will be willing to send me a letter of introduction it will expedite things.>>

After that, hunker down for about 3 hours for a nap.
Trigger
Letting his astral form flow up from his relaxing meat body, Eyes rises into the astral space around the ritual circle. His form is of the perfect version of himself, a slim and fot man with flowing long hair tied behind his back. He has a mix of tribal and detective noir clothing that somehow doesn't seem to clash on him. His face is calm, his facial hair groomed and slick, and he has blank spots where his eyes should be. His glasses move on there own though on his face, adjusting shapes like his eyes would, narrowing, arching, widening like they were the organ they represent.

As Nix begins the ritual, Eyes watches the faint astral trail for from the link Nix is using, a line that zooms off into astral space, curling and twisting, never going one way. Starting off after it, Eyes begins the hunt.

Almost six hours later he had barely gotten anywhere with his tracking despite his very best efforts. Throwing his all into the last hour hadn't gotten him anything more either. The Spirit of Man at his side seemed just as stumped as he did. His target was behind an exceptionally strong ward it seems, something that not even one or two mages could make alone, maybe not even three working together. They were up against something exceedingly powerful. Fearful, Eyes returns to his body and passes on the information to Nix before sending a message to Caliph to grab them.

When he gets back to their headquarters here in Provo, Aiden slips into the shower quietly, meditating as he lets the cool, cleansing water wash he body and thoughts clean. Feeling at ease, he steps out and into a clean white robe he brought with him, moving to settle onto the bed, falling into a deep meditation. Slowly he lets his thoughts fall away, cleansing his mind for the quest he was about to leave on. It was the only thing he could think of, the only lead he had for this case. The metaplanes called out to him.
Redjack
Setting in the circle following not only the failure of the summoning, but also of the astral tracking Nix comes to only one conclusion... The boy is dead.

As Aiden returns to his body Nix is sitting, quiet... agitated with the current turn of events. "The boy is dead. What is our payment if the boy is dead? We need to determine if there have been any recent abductions."
Trigger
Before leaving the area, before heading back to their place for his quest, Aiden turns to Nix, listening to the man's question, and answering in a somber tone, "I do not believe the boy is dead. There was a trail out from here, there would not have been if he were dead. But it was being disrupted every step of the way, countered by something much much stronger than either your spell or my attempts at tracking. I believe the boy is behind a ward, one created by not just one, two, or even three mages working in unison. We are dealing with a coven here."

The very idea of dealing with a coven of blood mages weighs on Aiden's shoulders as he step out of the place. With every step though he grew more prepared for what he had to do, a plan that had come to him in his many hours in the astral over the last days. He needed to go hunting in a higher place.
Redjack
Nix takes in the additional information silently. In fact, he is silent the entire ride back to the motel room and for some time after that. The information greatly concerned him. The spell was executed with perfection and precision. He had even taken the risk of overcasting to compensate for protections he expected. The level of protection this boy must be kept behind is greater than he could imagine. Three weeks on and he is still kept behind wards and protections of this level... Why? That is considerable effort to still be maintained. Surely he should either be dead by now or the protections relaxed..

While Aiden showers, he begins searching the current news for news of child abductions, moving backwards in his search till he finds the last.

When Aiden comes out of the shower. "Which direction did the trail go? North.. South..?"

"South.... Hmmmm... That keeps the ex-wife in play, but this other data seems to keep us going the direction that MagPye was on. The missing, and still missing, children seem to all be in the magically active/affluent classes."

At least that is consistent with out findings on the wards.

<<@Caliph [Nix] When you meet with the Johnson, find out about staff who left within a week of the boy's disappearance. They could have been contractors with his gardeners, but I think these children were hand picked. That meant someone had to study them for a time. Since they have avoided detection by the police, it would have been indirect contact.>>

Onhanzee settled back onto the bed. It had been a long time since he had thought of himself by that name. Now back in the NAN, even if it was Utah, the air was a little cleaner than Seattle and the people a little less.... Seattlites.

He immersed himself back into the matrix to continue his searches. Arrogance. They are very powerful. Time to see if pride is their sin.

As he starts skimming the news media and he comes across the tabloids, Nix decides to contact Trixy Pabrewsky, his PCC tabloid reporter contact. Now that he has a trend which will not tie back to the Johnson, it is time to work his contacts.

"Trixy. Sweety. Long time no talk. I am in the PCC, looking into missing kids. I have noticed several trends, specifically that the kids that don't seem to be found are more often the richer ones and any magically active ones.... This sounds like something right up your alley....."

Nix, been a while. Sounbds like you're on to quite a conspiracy. We should meet somewhere. When's good for you?
Redjack
"You saying you're coming to Salt Lake.... or you wanna meet in VR right now?"
fistandantilus4.0
Salt Lake? What in dog's name are you doing there?. Let's make it VR then hon. Send me an invite in an hour with a private room, and I'll meet you there. This data better be authentic though Nix. I'm not saying you'd try to screw me, but data can be wrong.

Is it a date then?
Redjack
"Vacationing.... What else would I be doing here?...... An hour it is..."
Nix drops the connection. He looks over to find Aiden already either in VR or off somewhere in the astral.

He takes a few minutes to assemble the data before walking down the street to the McDuff's. Once there, he selects a few items from the menu. Does it really matter what I get? It'll all taste the same... cardboard box and all...

The girl behind the counter reminds him of his ex when they first met. She was a wide-eyed young woman and he was.... well, he was younger.

"Onhanzee, can't you get a normal job like anyone else? Surely you could become a security mage or something like that. Make some real money instead of all this cloak and dagger shit?" She was in that mood again. He'd come back shot up and with less cash than they needed for her tuition. He'd promised to get her enrolled full time this semester, but the Johnson stiffed them on the final payment.

"Look. I'll get a real job, perhaps with a PI firm. I'll come out of the shadows. I'll get legit". Of course, the ID still had to be faked. He couldn't let her know about his past. About the things that put him to wandering in the first place...

In the end that didn't work out either. He'd hooked up with Jack. At least that worked out... mostly.

With ten minutes to spare, he made it back to the motel room. He dropped into full VR and set up a private room at the a reputable shadow-sight and sent her the contact information. His icon is that of an indian warrior in full tribal regalia. Amulets and jewelry hang from his neck and clothes. He wasn't sure why he liked this look... Just that he did.

<<Nix (Caliph) - Wilco. More to follow.>>

When I get the message from Johnson I'm on the road, moving the wizkids around. Tell them what's up, drop them off, and compose a quick message to Detective WalkingHawk and the desk Sergeant at the West Valley PD requesting a meeting.

Drive down there, preparing my questions to myself in my mind. Make sure that I'm only carrying legit stuff; no sense in getting myself arrested on the way down. Questions are gonna be simple - what kind of investigation and searches did you do, can I see the files, stuff like that. Only 'carrot' I got is the data from the search, and that might be... awkward... to drop in there.

Oh well, gotta get a read on the dude.

Pull up about 2 blocks away from the station, in front of a donut shop. Buy a couple bulbs of coffee and and some bagels and donuts and get them in a bag. Toss the bag in the car, coffee bulbs in my pocket, and walk down to the police station. Quick double check to make sure I'm not carrying any forbidden crap.

Get to the station and request the audience: "Howdy. My name is Jonathan Canadagua, and I'm here to request a meeting with Detective WalkingBear. Want some coffee?

Right on time, trixie's icon appears in the chat room. It's a small dog, most likely some sort of terrier, with soft brown fur, and a little red color. The dog's tongue lolls out of it's mouth happily. Trixie apparently has a thing for mutts.

All right Nix, you've got me here. Now what' re you gonna do with me?

The little terrier gives a lop sided smile and sits on it's haunches.

The desk clerk gives a half chuckle and calls up, apparently on a line straight to his data jack, because he never speaks. After 30 seconds or so, he nods and points to a hall behind him, and an Arrow appears, giving Caliph directions, along with a stern blinking yellow sign on the AR reading Do Not Deviate From the Path.

The directions lead him to a small office on the second floor. A quick glance inside shows an annoyed looking pure blood Native behind a desk going through vitrual paperwork. He's wearing a suit, although the jacket is on the back of his chair. A large Colt Manhunter still hangs from it's shoulder hoslter however. He looks up at caliph and waives him in.

You must be the man from Dances on Clouds. Another Investigator? By the sound of it, he wasn't much impressed with the idea. He doesn't stand or offer his hand.

I do have one favor to ask you, and some of it may be out of what you're willing to give. No worries if you put the kibosh on the request. I snooped around the apartment complex yesterday, trying to get some samples of the area. Would you mind if I run my olfactory scanner over any of the stuff you might have taken from Dances on Clouds's house, to compare it with what I found in the area? I might also have some stuff I found in the area that could help with other stuff you're looking at in exchange, but I ain't sure how to ask you which information you might want."

Nix' own icon, that of a short geek with a pocket protector and glasses held together by duct-tape, is eccentric as well. His icon does retain his elven ears, but otherwise is a contrast to him in real life. He takes a moment to push the glasses back up his nose contemplating her suggestive opening before leaning in to reply.

"Not near as much as I'd like." He smiles a moment before continuing, "Perhaps we should start with the data before we discuss how I can show my appreciation back in Denver...?" He again takes another moment to gauge her reaction. Lacking any true body language he continues, "There appears to be a spike in the abduction of young children in the PCC. Children from affluent families and those with a proclivity to awakening seem to not be reappearing almost to a child. I was hoping that you could look the data over and see if you see any trends I have missed. You are so much better at those things than me... And if we find something, you may have an scoop in the works...."

Quick thinking. Push into the stall, drop trow, and sit for a sec as I rehearse this out.

Pop the RF scanner and the olfactory scanner on. Put a readout of the former in my vision; start dumping the data from the latter in a second file. It's a longshot that I might be able to do anything with them, but no consequences...

Set the RF scanner to pipe in and try to intercept someone broadcasting detective credentials, if I pass by them. Can always try the easy way...

Hitch trow and move purposefully out of the restroom. Ain't my first time in a police station, I can probably at least find the evidence locker and claim to be lost. Hitch the first likely looking turn I can, and after two more it won't be much of a lie any more...

Nix - Friday, April 13th 0920 - Online Chat room

Nix reaches out and caresses the dog's cheek. He knows the woman underneath and the carry over of the sensation to the brain back in the meet body through the sim-rig. "Thanks. We'll have to have a little celebration when I get back to Denver if this works out for both of us". He then turns and exits the chat room. I guess that the best I can help for here. Time to work the last contact that might help here....

Stepping out into the electron flow of the matrix, Nix quickly exits the Denver Grid and heads off for the Seattle Grid and the Lampshade shadow server. He didn't really understand the technicals of it, but he did know that logging into the server and passing out the other side with his trail obfuscated. That's all he really needed to know.

While in Lampshade, he changes his icon to that of a Star Fleet officer. Spider was a fanatic about all things Star Trek and runs a pretty powerful sculptured reality program. Old friends as they are, Spider had given Nix a code that got him on the ship (in the node) and into the Ten Forward lounge.

Entering the node begins by stepping through the doorway out of the shuttle and into the shuttle bay. Looking around at the details of the bay, Nix always was amazed at the level of detail involved in this program. The Captain Kirks had started this program before the crash. Nix knew that Spider had lost some of the last updates by his crew, but did have a recent backup copy that he has continued to modify since then.

He figured the red shirt escorting him to Ten Forward was probably a low level IC program, but he didn't want to find out. He did know that the security chief was an really impressive agent.

Stepping into the lounge, he noticed that an Orion slave girl was dancing much to the amusement of the various crew and guests in the room. Several people stood out as definitely not part of the program, like the six foot tall fluffy bunny. Others were harder to discern without using an analyze program. Since that would be rude, he refrained. Guinan was tending bar. Nix knew that she also was part of the program. Spider liked to pull in characters from across the twelve different Star Trek series to populate his ship. 7of9, from Voyager, was across the room chatting it up with a real person no doubt while Kurock, from The Empire, sat waiting to engage someone in a game of Klingon Sa'Tek.

Nix ordered a drink from the bar and tapped his com badge. "Captain Spider. Lieutenant Nix here. Do you have time for a dialog today?"

"Actually Guinan there is. I have a perplexing problem and I seem to be missing something.. A child was kidnapped. Children matching his demographic are being taken. He is still alive after three weeks and heavily protected. We have only one lead and I think it is pretty extreme, but every time I try to remove the option it just gets reinforced.." Nix sighs, forgetting for a moment that Guinan is actually a complex program. "I'm lost as to where to look next...?"
fistandantilus4.0
Then maybe you should think about why someone would take a child.

If that doesn't work, maybe yu could try what I do. Step back from the situation. Do something else for a while. Then you'll come back to ti, and look at it with fresh eyes. Maybe you'll stop seeing what you're stuck on, and see something new that gives you a fresh angle.

What was I expecting magic from software...?

"Yea.. Thanks..." He turns around toward the Orion dancer. I'll let her distract me for a bit... As he watches her seductive belly-dance he ponders her advice and his situation. Why..? Rich and magic.. Blood mages... No, why keep them alive... To control them... to replace them... Have any of the children been found a month or more later...? I'll have to add that to my list... I think I need an Orion slave girl.

At this point, if I'm asked to leave, it'll be easy to get out of trouble; I'm deliberately lost as hell, so I can just ask for an escort out.

It would allow the two of them to communicate freely without anyone else being in the node being able to understand, intercept or interpret the conversation. Some days I think Spider knows more about computers than I do about magic.... "I'll cut to the chase. I'm in Salt Lake City. There appear to have been a spike in abductions of children who are affluent and awakened.... I'm on the clock to locate one. The child is behind an incredible amount of magic protection... Nix - Friday, April 13th 10:51 - Motel Room
The brisk walk had done little to put Onhanzee at ease in regards to the boy. He did revel in the air that was cleaner than the Seattle air he had been breathing for the last several years. Sitting in the grass near the motel, he sends a text to Caliph:
<<@Caliph [Nix] The ritual was mostly a bust. The target is still alive, but very well protected - somewhere south of here. I've also contacted several of my matrix contacts to help look into the trend of affluent, awakened kids disappearing. I'm expecting results as 13:00.. Make than 14:00 local time. Any success on your end?>>
