I've also seen mod packs that add 'not a Vault suit' for starter clothing, something that a Wastelander would actually wear.

Blasphemy. It's not a Fallout if you don't start the game wearing a Vault jumpsuit.

'tis true.
Hence, Fallout Tactics=/=Fallout

I'm generally out of the Vault suit and into a Wastelander or Mercenary outfit by the time I finish out the Gecko slaying.

That's not the point! You're supposed to start in one, even if you only wear it for a few minutes.

WR, have you tried updating (or downgrading) your drivers? Your soundcard driver especially looks quite old. Your video card driver also is pretty dated. Honestly, I'd consider doing a full system tidy-up - HDD scan, virus scan, memory test, windows updates (including optional updates), driver updates, just because you should be doing that anyway, and it eliminates possibilities. Next to that? Try turning off unnecessary programs and devices.

It's a longshot, but I don't see anything inherently odd about the setup you posted (not that I'm an expert).

Dammit, I thought I did all that! I went to the nVidia website and ran their updatey thing.

I actually encountered a bit of difficulty with the audio card driver because it was listed as a generic in the device manager, but for what it's worth I did go to the RealTek audio website and got whatever updates were available there.

Windows shoul be updated except for SP3. I auto download the MS updates.

HD defragged and scanned recently as well.

If my nVidia drivers are somehow still dated maybe I need to try the update one more time??

Well you can still get it and wear it right off, the mods add a set of clothes next to the bed you can put on after you get the Pip-Boy.

Not the point!

By the time you leave the "tutorial" you should be wearing a Vault jumpsuit, have a knife of some sort, and a 9mm pistol. nyahnyah.gif

I don't recall having a pistol by the time I finished the tutorial in FO2. And in FO3, wasn't the guard armor not a vault suit? Don't remember the FO3 one as much, but I'm certain you had no pistol in FO2 before the first town.

Details!

The last update for your graphics driver is 2010. it specifically mentions fixes for New Vegas:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-260.99-whql-driver.html

Look also at updating your motherboard drivers. I notice you're running AMD. Is this a custom box? If so, you may want to speak with whoever built it about any specialty hardware or software configurations he used.

I'm guessing the kind that remove underwear.

And a couple that add animations for "interacting" with NPCs. Interesting ones.

Also! I found out that the "pre-order bonuses" you could get at various retailers turn out to be just game plug-ins, each self contained with no verification checks of any sort. So, of course, they're floating around in torrent sites. Just unzip them into the game's data folder like any other game mod.

As well as a new source of "income". *cough*

FO2 didn't have a pistol until Klamath. You wandered out of Arroyo with a spear (or maybe a sharpened one) and maybe a knife, then you started picking up bang-bang in Klamath - and went crazy in the Den.

FNV's tutorial left me with a couple Gecko Skins, a Varmint Rifle, Vault Suit, and generally a 9mm pistol/Laser Pistol & 9mm Sub.

I'll turn that into a fully repaired VR (hopefully with a scope if I'm lucky in the store), a 40% Single Shotgun, and a .357. If I've got Wild Wasteland added, I'll have a 10mm pistol with that and more Gecko Skins. Then I make the decision whether or not to truck up to NCRCF and clean the place out, or move down to Primm and get some Merc gear.

Either way, the Powder Gang goes down hard by the time I hit Nipton. I like listening to the guy whose legs got broke when I walk into the store. The 'oh god why me' sound is one I treasure.

Oh! Laser Rifle for the taking in Nipton. Check out the trailer park with the Ash Pile, body, and lottery ticket.
Stahlseele
Nipton has a horribly trapped house as well <.<;,

I didn't. I even killed all the radscorpions while they were still in their cage. ^^
Stahlseele
i did not REALIZE that there were radscorpions in that cage untill i had my third try in there . .
Afterwars i bombed the hell out of that house before i went in <.<
Doc Chase
I haven't explored that house. My travels are constrained to the town hall, trailer park and general store. I'll have to look for it now!

The Raided Farmstead also amuses me. I'll camp out in the trailer with a scoped, silenced rifle and pick off the raiders, then swap over to whatever pistol I'm rocking at the time and blow heads off as they try to sneak inside.

Sniping's too fun for me. I'll snipe radscorps from the Goodsprings Cemetary, then scamper off as the giants come charging up to see whodunit. I'll come back with serious-caliber gear later and just start putting the hurt on 'em.

Hmm, okay, this evening I'll check out that page. Maybe my other drivers were even older and needed to be updated to some earlier point or something.

It is indeed a custom box...I got it from a local store in Las Vegas. Therefore it has the mom and pop charm. What do you suggest, ask for assistance with updating the motherboard drivers if the nVidia update fails to resolve the problem?
nezumi
If you post the motherboard information, I can search for the updated drivers for you. I can't think of any other drivers it's likely to be, but it's not like I do customer service professionally : ) If you've done a virus check et al. and updated all your drivers, you may just want to call said store and ask. Sounds like they're the sort of boutique which thrives on customer service.
Wounded Ronin
I assume the motherboard drivers would be listed in the msinfo? I'll post that this evening.

EDIT: You know, I just ran the automatic update for my graphic card driver and it says it's fully updated. Next, I manually chose the most recent driver for the grahpics card, and the installer file I downloaded was exactly the same as the one that I already have from the last time I tried to update my drivers. From what I can tell, that driver seems to be already fully updated.

EDIT 2: Ended up buying Driver Whiz (damn their successful marketing technique of only telling you you have to buy it after it scans your system!) and updated certain drivers. I'm going to give Fallout a whirl now and see if it's more stable.
Wounded Ronin
Still unstable. :/ Crashes similarly to before the updates. I notice that it crashes, among other times, when I encounter new NPCs in a combative capacity. I wonder if it's that dual core AI issue, even though I supposedly fixed that already with the .ini tweaks.

I think I'm going to go ahead and manually delete the game files, and then reinstall through Steam, next.

EDIT: Fooled around with it a little more, still super unstable, so I've deleted local content. Don't have time to download it again this evening so I'll try it tomorrow or on the weekend.

Very curious, i don't have a single patch installed and aside from that one bout of crashes, my game runs pretty stable O.o

I'm kind of thinking their problems came from not testing on enough different systems, and so it is only certain systems which are having problems. You just got lucky and have a system that is trouble free.

My game is updated, I think. I bought it via Steam. I've actually not had any crashes with New Vegas and it's been pretty stable as well. A little sluggishness (maybe) when there's a LOT of clutter around, but that's to be expected.

I wonder what else could be the problem. Does it require SP3?

There is a performance boosting fix DLL file that is available here:
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778
Alternate version - http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34970

Apparently the version of DLL that comes with the game can cause system conflicts, these are older versions that may be more stable.

So, NV was on special in the local gamestore..

Steam apparently wants me to wait until Christmas anyway as it's not playing nice and I can't install the damn thing.
Zyerne
Apparently, having bought an actual physical copy, I still have to download it through Steam before it'll install.

Can't say I'm impressed.

Edit: Apparently, If I try and install it with patchy Steam access it does a partial get if off steam later install. If trash it then reinstall with steam working properly, it finally installs from disk. Go figure.
Stahlseele
*nods* steam can be like that <.<

Veronica's mission was very unsatisfying, it seemed they set her up for failure. i don't know if there is a way to get a positive end out of it. I was going to try and run her mission after getting the lockdown ended and keeping the moderate eldar in charge but at that point I just wanted to end the game and collect my Hardcore and NCR achievements. While veronica is one of the most interesting personality wise her side quest had to be one of the more tedius and annoying.

It is also badly broken. I had two branches being blocked off because they relied on overlapping with some other quests that i had already finished frown.gif

I wonder if it is another case of obsidian having some grand plans but getting cut of by whoever wanted a release asap. Basically the same that happened with a ktor2.

Well the helios branch may not be broken pr say (i think i could have completed it if i had made helios work as a weapon, my intention, rather then break it), but the food branch was pointing me to the vault mainframe with no option for it to go "ah, that info have already been collected". This leaving me with only the irradiated vault option (ye gods!).
Stahlseele
*shrugs*
i collected both quests and then went into the vault, so both quests got completed and it started E-DE's quest.
hobgoblin
Hey, i would not mind if the plant vault branch went like helios, saying "oh crap, already got/destroyed that data so thats not a option". Problem is that the branch basically hangs, pointing you back to a mainframe that contains no data. I guess they never considered the possibility someone would bypass veronica on first meet, and then backtrack when going solo got "boring". I just wonder if the NCR quest will break in the same way if i try to get the data for her first rather then NCR. But then i also managed to loose the vegas passport at some point (guess it happened during all the "stripped of gear that then gets returned", and i fast traveled back to vegas before the messages had finished playing) and had to force my way in via the NCR base (pesky trigger happy guards!).
Wounded Ronin

Note that the Space Suit in the RepConn launch site also doubles as a nice Radiation Suit. It's in the room that has a window to the rocket staging area.

Might make the irradiated areas a mite easier.

By the by, be VERY WARY of dealing with the Brotherhood of Steel when trying to get them to ally with the NCR. I am putting the BoS quest on the queue to do last, so if I muck it up, I can actually reload and fix it.

It's also very telling that the Capitol Brotherhood chapter is only very tacitly aligned with the California chapter - and that every single one of the Brotherhood expeditions to expand their influence has become a chapter in its own right and sits on bad terms with the original.

No wonder Veronica's line is so crappy. They're stagnating and they know it.
