So, here's some one of the background posts Torrey and I are working on right now. Expect more of them to come up over the next few days as we finish hashing out details.

February, 2071 – Ares Macrotech Arena
“An easy 5k, you said. Just a bunch of teeny bopper sim-fans, you said.” The pixie's voice was scathing, and Argent resisted the urge to swat at the figure flying next to him. They were hustling down a narrow corridor in the bowels of the Arena, the screaming figure of Tanzina, the newest sim-synth-pop star to be culled from the unwashed masses of LA by the marketing team at Horizon.
“What do you want?” he shouted, louder than he meant to, a bit of a vulpine growl flavoring his tone. But by now, even the fox-shifter was starting to breathe hard, and trying to concentrate on moving the boy while he was busy screaming her head off wasn't helping his focus. Ahead of them in the narrow cement tunnel, a hulking humanoid figure appeared among the tangle of pipes and wiring conduits. Argent swore, jerking the girl to a rough stop in the center of the path.
“Dzan...” he said worriedly. The pixie spat a string of curses and darted forward. One of these days, I've got to learn Sprethiel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The run had started off so easy it was almost like a cliché. Niaomi had called, needing some Awakened security for a concert that was happening that weekend. The boy wasn't nationally famous, in fact, he had been working bars and nightclubs just a few months ago. That hadn't gotten death threats or anything, but there had been a series of annoying watcher spirits, and one of her shows had been plagued by a series of accidents that had scrapped the whole production. Investigators afterwards had confirmed that a spirit had been there, using it's magic to force accidents where they shouldn't have been. So, Niaomi was sure that it was just a prankster, and she wanted to put some discrete Awakened muscle near the synth-pop star to dissuade him or her. It had seemed like a milk run, exactly the sort of thing Dzan and Argent needed to get back on their feet after Smoke and Silver had disappeared under disturbing circumstances during their last run. Argent had taken the run without hesitation, trusting to both their skills and his rep with Niamomi to ward off any serious issues.
To be fair, most of the night had been spent in the lap of luxury. They'd been picked up by one of Horizon's limo's before the show, and traveled in the champagne and real leather filled interior to pick up the star and his normal bodyguard, and then to the backstage of the arena, where the boys first big show was going to be held. He had a bit of a local following, and they'd had to hold back a few overzealous fans, but nothing even vaguely difficult. They'd seen the boy to his dressing room, Argent heading off to schmooze with a few of the Horizon marketing sharks, and Dzan parking himself inside the room, all but invisible under his natural glamor.
There'd been a few of the mischevious watcher spirits pre-show, but Dzan had easily mopped them up. There had even been a more powerful spirit lurking around backstage after the show started, hard to spot among the flashing lights and the strobing blacklight, but Argent had caught one tech and prevented some serious injuries after an apparent 'fall', and Dzan had tracked the spirit down and driven it away.
But after the show...after the show was when things got interesting. They'd been on their way back to the dressing room, congratulating Tanzina on his successful show, when [b]Dzan had motioned the others abruptly to a stop. Standing front of them had been the slumped over figure of a young man, eyes wide, staring blankly up at them from his knees in a puddle of blood. Behind him, the mangled body of a guard was scattered across the hallway, a hulking humanoid figure crouched over the largest pieces, shoving gobblets of flesh and blood into what passed for a face. Argent has whistled softly, and Dzan had said something in Sprethiel. Shocked, Tanzina had been speechless for a moment, but when the young man on the floor blinked and whimpered, “I...I only wanted to see you...I...I love you!” and stretched out bloody hands up to the pop star, Tanzania had started screaming. At the sound of the stars screaming the formerly oblivious creatures head had snapped up, eliciting another string of Elven curses from the pixie hovering in front. Tan had kept screaming even as Dzan had blasted the spirit with something, scattering it into it's component mana across the narrow hallway. The pop star had kept screaming when Argent darted forward, a swift kick knocking the kneeling man into a groaning heap against one wall of the tunnel. Had kept screaming, in fact, even as the pair of runners ran, accidentally heading deeper into the compound thanks to a lack of knowledge about the layout of the arena.
“I thought you destroyed the spirit,” Argent said tightly.
Dzan spared enough time to flip the other runner the finger before turning back to the spirit, cracking his tiny knuckles and shaking his shoulders to loosen them.
“He must have summoned another one. Alright big and ugly, let's rock.” The encounter was brief, and the pixie was a merciless opponent, but even Dzan was breathing hard by the time he'd ripped the spirit apart.
Argent was already pushing Tanzania forward, thoughts flashing as the AR menu's zipped across his contact lenses. Niaomi's number flashed up, highlighted, and started dialing, almost before the runner had time to fully codify the thought.
“Niaomi!” The fox shifter chirped into the phone, faking good cheer.
“What's going on, Argent? I'm getting some kind of 911 call from the staff at the arena.”
“Your friendly prankster? Untrained Awaken kid, obsessed and in love with our pop star here. And I'm pretty sure he's been feeding his spirits blood. They smeared one guard all over the hallway, and he's still summoning more. I don't think he can control it, Niaomi.”
The woman on the other end of the line swore, and Argent could tell by the distracted tone in her voice that she was on the line with other people, her enviable implants giving her the ability to carry on multiple conversations at once.
“Alright, look, I just got on the horn with the Marketing department, and they're going to forward an extra 15k to you guys if you can get Tanzania out without getting him seriously hurt. Call it hazard pay. I'm sorry,Argent. I would have told you if I'd known.”
The fox shifters grin was real this time. More money, and I'll be known as a go-to guy to more of the company. Win-win, right? Assuming the up and coming blood mage doesn't eat everyone first.
“You got it, babe. I need an exit, a car, and an HTR team.”
I've got some personal history notes I want to toss out to develop some of my contacts more, and three more 'run' posts. To give a brief timeline, based on what
JxJxA posted, there are the other three runs, available for tie-in's if anybody wants to write one up as part of their background.
April 2071 - Realizing that they needed a bit more muscle if they were going to keep running the shadows,
Argent and
Dzan went through an outside fixer to meet a few people that shared their odd moralistic bent towards the Awakened 6th world. They found themselves on a run to track down the source of some actually radioactive material being dumped in a lacuna, and paired up with an odd little gnome, a troll combat hacker, and a South American Druid. At the site, they bumped into a toxic shaman in the process of building up a power base among the mutated creatures and spirits. Dispatching him, the group managed to track the source back to a small local bleeding edge arms manufacturer that had cracked open an old underground bunker full of oddly advanced tech from before the first crash and dozens of barrels of old fashioned radioactive waste from a small, now defunct nuclear power plant.
November 2071 - Having found a decent team to keep working with, the group had taken a quick and simple recon run to find out what was going on at a new highly secretive facility on the outskirts of LA. Once there, they discovered that the University of California had shifted its Awakened Fauna research out to the facility, and that the researchers were currently poking and prodding at a tiger shifter they'd gotten a hold of in the wake of some incident at the local zoo. Quick to get the man-eater off their hands, the zoo hadn't asked too many questions. When
Argent found out what was going on, he'd literally lost it, charging into the facility and forcing the rest of the group to go along purely because they were too far outside of town to escape if they didn't shut down pursuit. The group, especially
Argent, had gotten beat pretty badly, since the researchers were prepped with silver batons and the like, but they'd rescued the tiger shifter and escaped. The run had been contracted by
Niaomi,
Argent's primary fixer, and it put a bit of egg on her face an tarnished
Argent's rep a bit, but he'd only apologized that others had gotten hurt. He's been apologizing and offering small gifts to the group to make up for it since.
June 2072 - Being a solid group now, with the tiger shifter added to the mix, the group had been hired for an odd run. A local mascot, a 15' long boa, had been abducted from a high school. Since the school had a high profile sports department, it had been worth someone's time to pay the group to retrieve it. They'd even insisted on offering two more runners, two human street sams, to help flesh out the team. The group had agreed, and tracked down the snake to a boat off shore, where it was being held by a rival school. Once they got out there, however, the group realized that the boa was Awakened and sentient.
Dzan and
Argent had shifted gears then, planning on freeing the creature and smuggling it back to it's habitat. The two humans disagreed, wanting to get paid and not tarnish their reputation, and when a brief scuffle ended with one of them accidentally killing the snake,
Dzan had lost it. He'd fried both of them and tossed their bodies overboard before anyone could intervene.
Argent stood beside him against any criticism, but after the run they'd had a long talk. It was after that that a second pixie, named Leo, had arrived at the apartment building they were renting out. Leo seemed like the polar opposite of
Dzan, compassionate, pacifistic, and kind, but it was obvious the two were a couple, and that Leo had a sort of calming effect on
Dzan like fire and water cancelling themselves out.
Again, these are just general ideas. If anyone wants to run with one to flesh out their character, knock yourself out. Otherwise we're going to write them up to flesh out
D'zan and
Argent. As I mentioned, I'll also be posting some snippets and pieces from
Argent's personal life during the two years.
