No problem, I'll just make a human then. I'd make a dwarf, but that's probably something GM would prefer me not to do.
Penta
2xBP is the official, rapidly-setting-cement ruling.

*sighs* I know I suck as a GM during the chargen phase of any campaign. I want to apologoize for that.

With 8-ish people playing, it makes not much sense to recruit an AGM. So I can't promise I'll not make a hash of rules questions as they're presented to me.

I can only promise that once we get out of chargen (and the associated "Oregon Trail phase" of ship design and equipping, which we've mercifully left aside for a bit), I'm a much better GM.

Story? I can do that.

Rules...I'm learning as I go along.
Dumori
This x2 race bp and SR4A x5 attrubutes then?

I'm still going elf.

You want to know the original reason I went elf, back when I thought I was using BP? (and knew I wasn't making a CHA or AGI heavy character)

I wanted to make sure my character could float even if I didn't pump a bunch of points into Swim.

Yeah.

P.S. Penta, are you sure you don't like Erased?

Only a landlubber would think like that! Ahab McCormick fears no wha... er... w-eather despite running around with a metal torso, right arm and lower left (peg) leg! Should the salty mistress claim his soul, then so be it!
Penta
yes. 2xBP for racial costs, attributes are karma x 5 as in SR4A.

Some quick thoughts, unrelatedly. Not Voice of God by any means, just some babbling.

Not all concepts are possible, within a given amount of BP/Karma, to represent in SR.

Particularly if you're trying to represent someone with a lot of little skills (such as might be gained by any sort of college education, or special ops training), it's probably impossible.

My persistent quest is to stat out a Knight Errant SWAT officer with a college education and some time working patrol before he went SWAT.

I've never pulled it off.

And I keep that in mind when reviewing concepts. Especially for specialized skills (Parachuting is a great example), they can be very perishable. I'm not cruel or, to be blunt, masochistic enough to try any form of skill degradation oce play begins, but if your character's been in the shadows for any length of time, you can justify why smaller skills aren't present. Learning them back might be easier, but maybe not. To be honest, I'd need to think about it given a particular skill.

For the character concept you worked out with me, I don't like it. The way I see it, it's fairly incompatible with having a SIN, for instance.

Toturi, by the way: If you can get everything in to me before this weekend, I'll look at your stuff first. If you don't get it done before you deploy, your character will just be the "really quiet one", if that can be at all justified, when we start play, until you return.

It is, sadly, totally possible we might not have started play, but I hope not!
---

With all that said:

Once I approve a character, it gets posted here.

It is not, at that point, locked in. It's posted for the comments and critiques of your fellow players - who are free to comment on whatever they see. Bio, sheet, whatever.

Once 24 hours go by without comment on a character, it becomes "soft-locked". I'll allow changes, but only with good reason.

Once everybody is soft-locked, characters become locked in and chargen, strictly speaking, will end. This is an act of desperation on my part, to keep things at least sort of organized.

At that point, we'll focus on the ship - we've argued about it on the side, but once chargen ends we're going to focus in on that.

Setting details I will state now:

You'll be starting in Miami, in the Carib League. Start date I may have stated before, I forget. In any event, "the second half of 2072" is a good start.

Your operating area, such as it is, will be a weird shape taking in basically the Atlantic Coast of North America, the Carribbean, the Gulf of Aztlan (What IRL is the Gulf of Mexico), and down to the Northern coast of South America - the classic "Spanish Main". Your Eastern boundary will, for sanity's purposes, be around the Azores Islands.

That can change as the campaign goes on, but that'll be the wide region you're authorized to operate in at start.
Penta
I'm happy (or happier) now. I just approved two sheets.

Dumori's Ex-SBS guy who still needs a name and bio and stuff, and Spudrock's Sea Shaman Oscar Jones. Whos bio I have here somewhere.
GrimWulf
My sheet OK with a changed language? Just needs bio?
Penta
GrimWulf: If yours is the one I'm thinking of (Malachi), yes. When we have your bio sorted out, then you can post it up.
spudrocks
Oscar Jones has a slim build about 5'6' 55kilos, brown eyes and shaggy brown hair with a pair of googles over his forehead ready to be pulled down a moments notice. He usually has on a globetrotter fatigues (naval style) that seem well used and a loose fitting armoured jacket. A fishing pole, the butt of what looks like a remington roomsweaper, and some magical gear stick out of his backpacket ready to be pulled out if needed.

I thought that watchers didn't really have force? Or force didn't make a difference or something. AFB at the moment though.
spudrocks
As for a boat I think an up armoured, up sensored, improved handliing MT Sea Nymph would be good.

Boats & Subs Handling Accel Speed Pilot Body Armor Sensor Avail Cost
MT Sea Nymph 0 10/20 2 18 10 3 ? ?

Maybe with one or two concealable heavy weapon mounts on the port and starboard side.
Dumori
Thats plus 2 on summoning tests not force.
spudrocks
Corrected the watcher spirit force.

Penta, you want my sheet? Bio's not done yet, but neither is my overdue psychology homework! Before I get underway on that (the bio), I need to know more about this free contact, Kevin Roberts. Is he with the UCAS Navy?
Penta
Neither is...a lot of my homework done, either.

I'm at school at the moment, Xahn. I'll PM you my email address to send the sheet to.

So far as your contact.

This is what everybody knows re their fixer contact, Kevin Roberts.

This Irish-looking human male is like something out of a trid. Lean, cool, and unfailingly polite in bearing, this gentlemanly sort has been in the shadows for about 2-3 years; you've known him for about a year at max. He's distinctly mid-range in terms of the work he deals with; no obvious "higher loyalties". He specializes in work involving maritime activity - within that, though, all sorts of jobs cross his desk, from the (very rare) wetwork to data steals to extractions.

Acquisition and fencing, though, is where he really stands out: He has contacts that seem able to get anything, and sell anything, from weaponry to vehicles to identities to real estate, even SINs and licenses, something that might be explained by his extensive contacts in DC and Atlanta.
Minchandre
Will be posing karma!Cherry shortly.

I'm thinking about names - I'm trying to decide if Cherry will be going by Cherry. Seren Ilana Duvdevani might not be the sort of person to go by a nickname, especially because "Cherry" is a lot less catchy in Hebrew (plus, "cherry" in Hebrew is for all intents and purposes actually her name). So, it's either that she goes by "Cherry", the English word (which is somewhat unlikely, since "ch" is an awkward sound for Israelis to make).

How weird would it be for someone to go by their actual name on our love boat?
Penta
Kind of weird, actually. If you leave the matter unsettled, I guarantee that Roberts will *give* you a nickname. However, you might not like it.smile.gif
Dumori
I havent even got a name for my guy yet. Bios are my weakness.
Minchandre
Am I the only one who completely bio'd out my character before moving to stats?

I'm special!
Penta
You are.

Dumori, I can help you with names. The name for the character can really be done last. Decide where your character is from, for one thing; that can narrow the numbers a good bit.

Okay, folks:

I am probably not the only one who, just because of the way this thread flows, gets confused every few pages about who's intending to do what.

So I mean to rectify that.

A few pages back, GrimWulf put up a listing of positions and who had "signed up" for them.

I'm going to repeat it, with my modifications and notes. This is, of course, a draft, feel free to make corrections.
---
Commander:
Master: Digital Heroin
XO:
Engineering Officer: Xahn Borealis
Gunnery Officer: GrimWulf
Marine CO: Belvidere & remmus have both shown interest but no posts recently (A fact which continues... - Penta) (New possibilities: Dumori, Grinder)
Thaumaturgical Officer: fazzamar, spudrocks
Intelligence Officer: Grinder (Foxx has dropped out, a PM to me seemed to say - Penta)
Quartermaster: Dumori
Medical Officer: Faraday/Hudson(?) (Multiple interest from both - Penta)
Navigation Officer: toturi, Xahn Borealis(?)
Communications Officer: Minchandre
---
And now some notes from my end:

Except for CO, Master, and XO, multiple people can take up a post. The three posts named? Well, one is purely for the paperwork, though there's a skills requirement. (Master, for those keeping track.) The other two, it makes no sense for there to be multiple of.

Otherwise, multiple people can certainly take up the other posts. Just, decide between yourselves who the "primary" person is, for OOC purposes if nothing else.

CO and XO are elected by the crew with the confirmation of your employer - in other words, you pick, then they confirm your choice. You'll figure out why soon enough. In case of a tie between multiple people, they select.

The same goes for purser - which isn't listed above because it's not really a position in terms of doing stuff ICly on a regular basis.

The purser's job is a mix of IC and OOC stuff. OOCly, the purser will be the person I rely on to keep a copy of the sort-of ledger I'll be keeping (Which will probably be an excel spreadsheet, when I'm honest - it certainly won't be anything complicated), and generally help me keep the numbers straight when it comes to the group's money issues. ICly, the purser is basically the ship's accountant, keeping track of money in, money out, the loan with your employer, and so forth. They will be audited regularly by your employer to prevent your employer's take from being skimmed off...and will be personally responsible for the results. The thing is that because, ICly, it's done with the help of accounting software and the like, it ICly doesn't take much time, either, so it's not like the other positions. So. OOCly, the purser? Really, just makes sure I don't typo in the wrong places, and keep a copy of a file handy in case I lose it. It helps to have a head for numbers, especially when we get into kitting out whatever ship we come up with, but not required. ICly, the job's more involved...But not in a way that's really RPable.

Hey All,
I'd be interested in joining in.

Penta, if you could PM me your e-mail, I can send you my file.

Jeremiah Gordon - Splash.
Born 2042. Petosky, MI UCAS
UCASNA (Naval Academy Graduate) Class of '64

Resigned Commission '70 as Lieutenant.
Assignments as Engineering Officer, Deck Gunnery Officer, Small Boat Operations Officer, EW officer, and Tac Operations Officer.

'70 - Present. Running Shadows as Smuggler.

As a position, he could fill either the XO or Intelligence officer role.
Penta
I can't PM you, nor you me, til you have 10 posts.
BigPapa
All right. I'll try and be interesting and make some contributing posts.

I assume then that you still would like another player in the game.
Penta
Until I have 10 sheets in, yup.

I haven't heard from either Belvedere or Remmus in a while. So basically, my thought is that whoever gets everything in first wins it, unless for some reason they want to strictly be a subordinate.

Oscar the sea Shaman will be the Thaumaturgical Officer. Otherwise he really isn't quaified for anything else except in a pinch an intelligence officer.

Navigation Officer: toturi

I thought I was navigation officer? What's your Navigation Skill toturi? I've got Nav 4.
Penta
There can be multiple people in every position except CO, XO, and Master, Xahn.

Also, my list is old and was before you got back to me.smile.gif
Penta
Quick thing: Nobody's asked about this yet, but.

10 people is my maximum only without an AGM to help me handle the crunch side of the game. With an AGM (who would remain a player), I can handle 12 players.

Which works, because there are actually 11 positions up there, excluding Master which is purely a paper thing.

We could probably handle more than 12, to be honest, but 12 people is already much larger than the normal SR group.

10 people is, even.

Anybody past the limit will go on reserve, same as with other games.

I'll establish who goes on reserve basically like this:

First, I try to fill all positions. Then, after that, I basically go by who got theirpackets (bio and sheet) in and approved first.

It is, to me, kind of frustrating that I can't take everybody who wants to play, almost inevitably.

This is the second time where I go in planning for not having enough people...And wind up with too many.

On the one hand, it gratifies my ego to think my simple idea is so popular.

On the other hand, last time activity fell off a cliff sort of suddenly, so I'm doubly-cautious.
---

Anyhow, moving on.

When we close out chargen (eventually!), we'll then move into the ship. Figuring out everything about it.

This will be a collaborative process. At the end of the day, I'll decide what flies as GM, but I'd like to focus on some things:

1. Yes, 500k to cover both getting the ship, modifications to it, and whatever other common gear you might want to get is kind of low for a government op.

However, 500k nuyen is picked very deliberately. Remember, it's structured as a no-interest loan. If I were to set it higher, you'd either have to give the government an unrealistically huge portion of any take (I thusfar have worked off the assumption that the government gets a quarter of the nuyen value of your captures, using that to pay off the loan and fund the op), or you'd probably never pay off the loan. Neither is really a good thing.

Rationalization: For the 500k you see and are loaned, the Navy probably is spending another 4 or 5 nuyen for every 1 you see to do admin stuff, maintain whatever covers you guys design, training replacements (players on reserve, who'll be trained on land instead of at sea), and so forth. Truth is, 1:5 is probably low, but it works for argument's sake.

2. You don't just need a ship, you need a cover. It'll be explained more clearly once we get into the game, but the international situation is ICly very tense. This is a covert operation. You'll be expected to have at least one cover. I actually advise a layered covers: The primary cover for anybody looking around, the secondary cover if the first one gets blown, the tertiary cover for if the second gets blown. (You can go on down the chain, but 3 or 4 layers seems like a limit.) Each layer has to explain the lies of the previous layers. Your ship has to make sense in light of those covers. None of these covers can point to the UCAS government.
