Okay, I guess. I really don't see him really carrying it around. It is most likely disassembled in a case. When we didn't have time to get gear before, and he didn't have transportation, I figured it was in a locker somewhere.

The pitch is to fight a devil summoning group of unknown size but presumed significant resources, in an unknown location, for pay that won't be negotiated until you arrive on site. The mission must be accomplished in 3 days. The offer is terrible, and they have no real professional report with Muhme. If Sharkboy was under more financial pressure, he'd probably take the job, but he just made 25k for walking into a hospital and chatting up some muscle. As things stand, this is an offer he can walk away from.

I don't have a second character rolled up, and didn't think through this beyond playing a Sharkboy as I had conceived of him. He's someone who sees running as a way to bring in extra cash, and not his primary form of employment. This just isn't the kind of job you take if you see things that way.

For Anna, the possibility to disappear for a few days after what they did was enough of motivation as we did not agree to do a raid just yet.

I had her share these thoughts with Shark, and tried to implicate him more in the crime. As he did not only did distraction, he arrived with us in the limo right?

I really don't know what your problem with Muhme is. She has been nothing but straightforward so far. There have been no false pretenses.

She got Rabe and his team whacked which does not bring a lot of confidence in her assessment of our abilities to pull off the job, and good roleplay indeed.

I really think you expect a bit much there from a Johnson.

All they do is give you money and a job, as well as information on what to expect (but they do not know everything themselves).

Rabe surely knew that it isn't easy, that there are dangers involved, and that there are other parties interested as well.

Anna feels that a Jhonson should hire the right people for the job, and getting the entire party killed reflects poorly on the Jhonson. It is not Muhme's fault, and we did just work for her willingly and successfully. So it is not a dealbraker, it is something to consider as all jobs involve a level of trust.

This nasty reputation would make Anna more careful around that particular Jhonson and less trusting. If a Jhonson cannot be trusted to hire the right people,
the shadowrunner team has to verify for themselves that they are in fact capable of pulling of the job. In that sense, Anna is talking from her own position since she wants Sharkboy to come so that the job is less dangerous to the the team (and to her).

I don't see how Muhme can possibly know that.

She asks a fixer (in this case the part is done by Eliza) to get her people that fit a certain profile.

That's pretty much the extent of what the Johnson can do to ensure that the people are right to do the job.

It's hardly possible to predict every possible outcome.

And if the occasional run wouldn't go haywire, it wouldn't be a dangerous job. It's dangerous in part, because of the unpredictability.



And that is exactly it!

It is the runners' responsibility to take jobs they think they can handle.

The Johnson does not (usually) force them to do it. It is merely an offer.

General Sharkboy thoughts on Muhme/the job

Muhme's a bitch. They don't have any real professional report. There's not any personal attachment to working with her. That's she's had a previous runner team killed, and her cold reaction to that in front of the team does impact his opinio/trust of her. Runners are disposable assets, but it's best not to remind them of that. That's she been straightforward makes the current proposal all the more clearly dangerous/prone to going very wrong. He hates bnc, doesn't particularly care for/doesn't know the others very well. There isn't a personal motivation to ensure their success. Sharkboy could probably do the work. He will project total confidence in his ability to do the work at a minimum. Being able to do a job, and taking a job are two different things, though. He negotiated an absurd payout for what turned out to be a milk run (for him), and now he can lean on that cash to turn down this job.


SquirrelDude thoughts

I always think it's important to have an answer to "why does someone need to take this job." Sharkboy's previous answer has always been 'I need money.' I view runners as something distinct from your standard fantasy adventure party member, who I think Sharkboy would have take this quest job. That's partly because most fantasy adventure quest aren't so cleanly divided into jobs, and are rather a long series of events that build on each other. There isn't really a time to just leave the party. It's also because there is a sense of comradery endemic to an adventuring party that I haven't found present in Shadowrun. The why can't just be a sense of needing to see things through to the end with the people around you.

Now obviously there's the metagame reason that you take the job because you're here to play a game where you take jobs and do stuff. However, there's a metagame reason for me to step back from the character: He's a neon pink mohawk character in a game that has always been a bit more mirror shades. It got to the point where on the last job he was told to just go sit in the car because he stands out more than a minotaur and no one thought he be useful actually doing things. That sucked.

There's only a little bitterness there. I always knew that was a risk rolling up the character. I've been leaning on rule of cool for a long time now. It's probably just time to put Sharkboy on ice until a time where he'd fit in better.

Well, my characters rejected jobs more than once for due to their personality, and loyalties. So I know how it feels.

Metagame, I hope you find a way to continue playing with us.

So far you all were lucky to have "good" Johnsons. Muhme is an old hag - no two ways about it - and there is quite a bit backstory there.

I hope you stay with us though - maybe with a new character. The nature of this scenario allows rapid reinforcement, so don't worry about getting back in.

Yeah, standing out more than a minotaur is quite a feat. But the mino makes for a believable corp muscle, the guy with the mask does not. That simply didn't work here.

To be fair, I don't think anyone expected that we won't need the backup. Also, Sharkboy had his moments with the goons outside, at least.


For myself it's really pretty simple.

Nova: She needs money and lots of it. So more dangerous jobs are not such a bad thing, as they tend to pay better. She trusts Eliza enough and for now Muhme has given her no reason to mistrust her either. She believes that the witch is being honest.

Me: I'm here to have fun and play the game.

P.S. I also don't get the "bad" Johnson that betrays the runners thing. There is almost no combination of factors where this really makes sense. It is super dangerous to anger a bunch of (usually) very powerful individuals, who are literally specialists in finding people and killing them, just for a bit of money (which, quite honestly, the payment in many cases is for the Johnson).

How do you wanna roll Sharkboy exiting the city? Handle that in IC/PM/or just handwave it as he's exiting the stage for now. I guess also I should get what his Karma was for his small part in the run. I don't know if or when I'd introduce another character. I don't have any other concepts on the brain that I've really wanted to try, and character creation always takes me forever.

Sorry for throwing such a wrench into everything and kind of breaking up the game like this, everyone.

That's why I asked OoC. bnc would have wanted to walk over to either Taurus oder Nova, but I didn't want to write it before I knew you'd actually respond.

So it's been over a week since exited and I'll go ahead and gives the heads up to not expect a new character from me in the near future. I haven't spent any time thinking about another character I'd want to play, and haven't been struck by any inspiration for new character ideas or mechanics I'm interested in learning at this time. I can't seem to conjure the mental energy needed for any of it.
