First pencil concept for anubis. I may put a background on Gabryel but it won't be 'till I merge the two drawings together. I'm having a hard time visualizing 'the Dark King' totem though, any suggestions?
The face will come out better in the inking.

Yeah, I had a hard time with that one too. He doesn't adhere to any real philosophy, so none of the traditional gods really work (and the Egyptian variant is Osiris, besides), and the Dark King isn't an evil totem, neutral if anything. The Grim Reaper was the best I could come up with, so go with that. Dark figure in the background, the cowled Death figure. This is necessary death, not evil death, if that makes any sense. What's there is pretty close, so work off of that.
Only thing that sticks out for Anubis is that his boots don't match. He dresses for the streets, but he doesn't live on them. Other than that, once it's cleaned up with inking it I'd say Anubis is done.
holychampion
Feb 6 2007, 04:44 AM
already did the boots, I'll let you have a look.
The totem in the background...too evil?
I get what u are saying though, so if the skulls wrong I'll try something different.
btw he will be standing behind gabryel just outside of the circle. which if u can't make out the runes read "To offend the flame is to burn".

I think the skull-thing in the background looks pretty cool, for what it's worth.
But for non-evil, Nessessary death? I'd say eliminate the skeleton, and just make it a cowled figure whose features and even body is shrouded in complete shadow.

Feb 6 2007, 01:36 PM
I think SD has it. It's just too menacing for what I had in mind. Cool in its own right, but just doesn't quite fit with the concept I had in mind.
Everything else looks great
*edit*-"To offend the flame is to burn"...you have no idea how apt that is for her. She's a little touchy about certain things. My players will get a huge kick out of that.

Pretty neat facial expression. Nice to see a more slender, realistic looking male character.

We have got to play a game together... Last time my character (the only one I haven't listed here, yet) did something like that, we were getting shooed off by security from a van that had two Rottwieler drones in it. So what does Alex do? Shouts "don't look into that van!" as he's walking away. of course, they looked. Even our Trickster shaman was going "dude, you're cold" I agree, your action poses are particularly good. Keep it up!
|
...[emphasis mine]
Yeah, I'm kind of looking for a new group since the current one I have been playing with has dwindled in size and meets sporadically. Unfortunately we are probably on opposite ends of the country (Portland, TT...er Oregon).
I enjoy playing characters that have more "unusual" personal qualities to them. Leela was by far one of my favourites for she looked, sounded, and acted like a 13 year old girl (even though she was nearly 20) but was also a fragging little genius. She could literally "bring the house down" in more ways than one (besides her scientific and demolitions skills she also had a rating of 10 [specialisation] in classical piano).
Of my more recent characters, both KK4.3 and my Cajun boxer "Hurricane" Hannah have been a blast to play. For KK it is the fact that "not all the lights are on upstairs" though she is otherwise very good at what she does (just don't give her anything beyond basic addition and subtraction). The best summation of her is "Bushido Cowgirl".
Hannah is just a rollicking fun character who takes everything in stride with her "bon temps" style while packing a vicious 8DV left cross. Check her pic in Squinky's thread, he captured her personality very well.

I know what you mean about unusual qualities in characters, though most of mine leave people asking "why?" (Aside from being a guy that occasionally plays female characters).
Gabryel so far has been the most interesting character to play, even though she's long since been relagated to NPCdom. She's almost got a split personality: earn her trust and she's charming and friendly (almost flirty), get under that and you hit emotional trauma that causes her to lash out when surprised, of course, being raped would do that to you.
Didn't say it was always a pleasant experience, but life can't always be rosy. Makes the characters all that much more interesting, if you can do it right.

I'm digging this thread.
I laid eyes on your gallery and checked out some of your colored works. I like a lot of your comic stuff. I hope it wouldn't offend you if I offered advice on coloring in photoshop, nothing special, it's just something that saves me tons of time (although I suck at coloring).
When you scan in a b+w image you can hit Ctrl-M and adjust that to get rid of all the little specks and unerased stuff, I usually have mine in a kind of s shape.
Then go to the channels area, duplicate the blue area. Create a new layer, go to select on the top deally there and select load selection, Blue Copy, click the invert image box and load it up on the new layer. It should have marching lines that you can fill with black, and then you can create a color layer underneath the new line layer, and you can select the areas with the magic wand with the original background layer. It's saved me a ton of time and it keeps those little white areas out. If you have any issues feel free to pm me. I hope this is helpful.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work. I think you said you were going to tone an image in photoshop, I'd love to see that and hear any tips you may have on that subject.

...man life outside the wall must be nice, those damn long eared galoots walling in our beautiful Portland...
[oops, fell into character there for a moment]
I actually grew up not too far away from you in Milwaukee (the one that's spelled right). Actually have been considering a return visit to the area. Used to make a lot of trips on the old Milwaukee Road Hiawathas to Chicago. I even have a campaign in the works set in my old home town called Suds City Shadows a segment of which is titled Take the Chipheads Bowling (yah der hey).
KK4.3 has a pretty nasty background. For her it was being beaten by her elven father and eventually getting dumped in Portland to fend for herself at the age of 12 because he saw her as a threat to his social advancement in the Tir (she was human). I agree, when done right tragic stories can make for very interesting characters. Kelly (her real name) always was and still is a pretty upbeat person in spite of all that happened to her, though as I alluded to, not "all there" upstairs. We used the uneducated flaw to describe the cognitive disability which was aggravated in part by the mistreatment she received. As a writing exercise I turned her backstory into a narrative work (partially spurred on by one of those the Why would someone become a Shadowrunner? threads).
I too tend to play female characters more often than not due to the lack of them in our the game group. Lately however I may have started a trend for the current team I am running as a GM has three women (played by male players).
OK, back to our regularly scheduled thread...

well the hand thing had to do with the spacing of the figure and the offset of Anubis was done so that he didn't overpower Gabryel and to give the picture a little depth. I totally see what you'r saying but I was once told that if you leave some small thing off page it tends to give the viewer the power to shape the image in their mind. ...Cool, it will be interesting to see how my dangerous little girl turns out. Take some time with her if you need to. I know, working with age groups other than "twenty-somethings" (which is the age most comic book and fantasy heroes are cast at) is not always the easiest (took me a bit of time to get kids & older folks down well). This isen't exactly a Shadowrun request (though I suppose it could be some kind of Spirit), but since you're empty for now...
I've recently come into possession of a song called "Templars of Steel" by Hammerfall, which is really good.
Anyway, here was my idea. I want an armored figure, armored head-to-toe in platemail armor. But not normal, realistic platemail. Full metal fantasy style platemail - thick, dark black plate, rivets, narrow helmet slit, etcetera. He needs to have a huge, and by huge I do mean huge tower shield in his left arm - kind of curved inwards at the edges, with a vision slit much like a police riot shield. It should be taller than the Templar is, enough to block a good door. The right hand should have a thick, "chunky monkey" hammer on a longish handle, with a broad spear blade on the top, so it could be used for bashing or poking.

...ahh, scanner registration issue.
BTW I have a few additional references for to help with Leela. I was going to PM them but the links came up as normal text with the bracketed Image tags as part of the text. At least I finally figured out how to get the normal HTTP tag to work. with any of the links open you are also able to browse the site for other images.
When I was steered to the film
Lemony Snicketts - A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), by a friend I was surprised (at the time I was still running Leela as a PC). Finally I was able to catch the TV trailer and noticed that the character, Violet Beaudalare (portrayed by the young Australian actress Emily Browning), bore an uncanny resemblance to my own attempts at drawing Leela.
Sidebar when I was able to see the film I loved the story and writing style so much that I even purchased the entire 13 book collection
The Complete Wreck. Though classified as Young Adult, I discovered it had an appeal for adults as well due to its dark sense of humour. While reading the series, I rewrote my Hacker character Violet's backstory in a the same style and have even toyed with a Snickett's styled campaign setting as well
Back to the images, the first two are of the actress herself. #1 is from a feature article that appeared in the Daily Telegraph (I tried to track down the article to get the date of it for an age reference but my search foo is impatient, It appears it must have been shot back in 2001 or 2002 since she looks all of 13 to 14). This one is close to Leela's physique and nature. #2 is from a photo shoot which I mainly included for the hairstyle Leela usually wore when she was still a runner. I also like the confidence in her facial expression, a look Leela would often give when she knew she was right. The Last one is a DVD capture, from the Lemony Snicketts film which is the "look" that originally caught my eye.
Note: since there is a page header, you sill need to scroll down to see the images.
Emily Browning 1 Emily Browning 2 Lemony Snicketts - Violet & Klaus Alas, in the years since the film she has lost that "sweet" look & some have even mentioned her name in the same breath with *sigh [in a negative sense]* Angelina Jolie.

...So far I love it The pose and scene works with her being a very athletic character (the car looks like a 2060 Moskovic).
just a few points:
...the easy stuff:
As a runner she also wore an old Army helmet (she could be holding it on with her left hand) and a Suretech Jacket ("bomber" style)
...now the hard part:
Since she is physically underdeveloped, she wouldn't have so pronounced a "wasp waist" & her chest should be flatter with little or no cleavage showing. Admittedly, the face still looks a bit mature. I know this is the most difficult part of age characterisation to get down (Squinky had a difficult time as well). One thing is to not accentuate facial lines as much for when inked, they do make a person look older because of the "hard" contrast. Maybe have her look up a bit more with either a sassy smile or ready to bust out in a giggle.
Again if you need more time, don't worry, I am patient.
Two more images for study:
(having too much fun making links since I finally figured out how to do them without a lot of keyboard entry)
Violet Sly Smile Emily Browning Giggle While studying in College both for fine art and comic illustration my instructors stressed the importance of building a photo library as a resource. With the Internet today this is far easier than it was back then having to cut pictures out of magazines & newspapers.
FYI - The reason I do not draw as much anymore is due to severe arthritis.

...looking very nice. "Such a dangerous little dahlink she is, Nyet?" The eyes definitely help a lot. I also love the windows in the car shattering from the concussion.
One more small point:
The debris look a bit more like missiles coming at her. Generally debris would form more of a radiating pattern (not necessarily symmetrical) and tumble during flight leaving more of a smoke trail behind while following a ballistic arc (seen way too many episodes of Blastmasters on Discovery). Considering the point at which the blast behind her is occurring, most of the debris would still be on the upward/outbound portion of flight. Check out images explosions from both RL as well as comics. Most structural demolitions jobs (both controlled industrial and military) are designed to collapse a structure by weakening it rather than blow it to kingdom come (the last thing you want is to endanger your own personnel on the ground with shrapnel).
Please excuse all the coaching, it's the teacher in me (first attended a teacher's college in Wisconsin). I like to see new artists do well, kind of the "passing of the torch" so to say. Once I can get this old scanner of mine up & running again (still having driver issues, may just end up buying a new one), I will try to post some of the stuff I did in the past. Most of it is Fantasy, SF, Superhero, & Tech illustration but there is some early Shadowrun stuff (SRI & SRII).

I love the Leela action shot. Very The Matrix, which is what I want from my Shadowrun.
Screw stealth and grit and street. I want to walk into an MAD, whip out a gun, and gun down the guard station.

Or rollerskate side-jump over a car while running from an explosion. ^_^
As for the warrior, it's a good start. The hammer and tower shield are more or less right, though the shield's more wispy, so it's hard to tell.
As for the warrior, his armor and helmet's not nearly as bulky as I was thinking - I was thinking larger, heftier, chunky-monkey style. Maybe with some rivets and pauldrons. (Can't forget pauldrons. Pauldrons are the win.

)
Still, I like it so far... Oh, don't forget a georget or make his helmet big and on a rotating collar or something. Exposed neck = bad.

...sweet, very sweet.

The explosion looks much better. You went with the sly smile, I like it (I can almost hear her giggling). She looks to have a bit of a double chin but I'm sure this will be one of the things attended to in the final version. Otherwise she looks simply marvellous, Her musclulature is perfect since she does have a decent strength for someone her size and is fairly athletic. Let me know before you get to the colouring phase.
@ShadowDragon8685 - Believe it or not Leela didn't have stealth as an actual skill but did "on a chip" (for her Skillwires 3). But then, who would suspect that such a sweet little thing would go about blowing up command centres, transmission towers, and parked helicopters (the last being her favourite target since an attack chopper is what killed her family and nearly herself as well).
Actually, Trinity and Neo from the
Matrix are good models for how I view Adepts and "Juiced Up" Sammies in relation to the normals of the SR world.
...also very nice, I always had a a time of it trying to depict archaic armour correctly (other than chainmail which usually fit pretty much like a shirt and regular leggings) correctly. Alas, most of my characters (save my Assimar Meg from a Forgotten Realms campaign) usually were depicted without their armour or were from classes that wore little or none (e.g. Rogues, Druids, & Monks).

eidolon: Yes I did and your next. Should be finishing up Leela today and starting on yours...so it won't be long. Thanks for the interest. Kyoto kid: I second that motion. I view the Matrix as a great visual of what physical adepts are about in game it even gives a very good visual of what the 'gun-bunnies' (physads who appropriate points toward gunslinging) would look like. Anyways I'm having the time of my life with these drawings. Thanks to everyone. |
...cool, glad you are enjoying this. Once Leela is finished, I'll let you get to some of the other requests in the queue. Then I will send you another challenge.
