QUOTE (Jack VII @ Nov 19 2014, 09:40 AM)
That was my concern as well. Jack being able to bring his Colt M23 is great... having to try to ride public transit with it not so much. It almost seems like, given the unique nature of Denver, there would be a thriving equipment rental/lease program for criminals (LOL).
Not sure what to do at this point. Mel is running her Matrix searches... I guess we could look up what the transit requirements are IC and notice that we would need to have CAS permits for our Restricted gear and cyberware, which might put the brakes on our plans to try to cross over the border semi-legally.
... one option would be for Mel to give us her gear while she drives Grease's car across the border with absolutely nothing of consequence inside of it. With that said, I'm not sure how border guards would handle someone driving a vehicle across an international border that isn't registered to them. Additionally, we just met Mel, would she really entrust a super-expensive cyberdeck to us?
There are an awful lot of unknowns. Maybe we should just fast forward to the meet with Onyx and have him/her (in an entirely IC context) give us our actual options and not waste time considering the stuff that is going to bring this run to a rather quick end.
I do think we need to get two shock-proof, preferably discrete cases for the items. Lots of bubble wrap too...
We were cross posting - I was just putting up the message from Onyx to jumpstart you guys
While having Mel drive the car while giving her deck to you makes the most sense OOC, it makes (as you point out) very little sense IC because you have just met. I doubt anyone would just hand over something like a cyberdeck (with its huge pricetag) to someone they just met, and I'm not sure Grease would hand over his car either, to be honest

So here are my thoughts:
With Chrome and Dr. Z on a limited posting for now, I'm thinking it would be best for Jack and Mel to meet with Onyx virtually at Ascension (they can still transmit a feed to Snap and Grease to keep them in the loop).
I'll post up a transition scene in an hour or so when I go on lunch.

@Mel,
Just throwing it out there so there isn't any confusion, everything you are doing is in AR (including the meet, so you can actually walk and talk and perform tasks as you do so.
You can't actually be in the meeting before your Matrix Search is over, because the meeting requires you to be in the host, but you should be done with your Matrix Search before the meeting starts, so that won't be an issue.
Jack VII
Nov 19 2014, 07:36 PM
I still don't understand why Matrix Search isn't an extended test. It really seems like it should be (with the thresholds modified a bit)... oh well.
Just a note, I've got a meeting in a few minutes that is going to take me out of action for a few hours and then I have a dinner I have to go to tonight, so my posting will slow down, although I can probably throw something up in between the two.

@Mel: Just in case it isn't clear, Ascension is mostly a Matrix club, so we can access it with our personas (AR or VR) from pretty much anywhere. Jack visited it last run to meet with a information broker named Smokey.

So, I will be busy tonight as I am taking my 4 year old to "Disney's Frozen on Ice"
When I get home later tonight I will post:
1) The information Mel receives on the dragon
2) The transition scene showing Mel and Jack's personas arriving at Ascension.
In the meantime, anyone and everyone is more than welcome to post what they are doing.

I just feel compelled to point out that we can all still get things taken care of if we're visiting the Ascension host in AR, given that time is somewhat of the essence. Since it isn't a call per se, we all can just login to the host and look for the dude all in black (hopefully there are not more than one).

So, I've jumped the timeline forward 30 minutes.
If you want to post what you are doing in that 30 minutes, I can edit my post to include it.
Also, I'm assuming that Jack and Grease's personas simply look like digital versions of themselves. Mel has provided me with details of her persona. If that is not the case for Jack and Grease, let me know, and I can edit that as well.
Last but not least, here is the result of Mel's Matrix Search about the dragon statuette.
Again, as Mel is not an expert in these things, the information available is general in nature. Chinese dragons are symbols of awesome power and wisdom. They are considered supreme beings, and many pieces of art have been created throughout the centuries to pay homage to this creature. The statue is in bronze, making its age impossible to determine. The dragon is clutching a pearl in its outstretched claws, know as the pearl of wisdom. This pearl is said to be the source of the dragon's mystical powers, and as such is guarded by dragons fiercely.

Grease would have Mel take the lead here, as she is the expert in the digital realm. I'll interject if there's anything important, but feel free to post for me to keep things moving along tomorrow. I will post after normal business hours tomorrow as my new schedule allows.
Thanks,

Here's the description of Jack's persona icon from before. He wouldn't have done anything special with it...
The persona icon coalesced as a basic and boring anthropomorphic figure; the small winged helmet and the wings on its feet the only touches of individuality in the iconography. Individuality might be stretching it a bit, the icon was the default for the Hermes Ikon commlink being using to access the Matrix.Soooo... should I deduct 60
from our group funds (I'm tracking that on the resource tracker as well) or 20
from each of the three of us attending this deal? For now, I'm going to deduct it from our 12K as I don't think any of us would have come to Ascension otherwise.
The only thing I was going to do in that intervening time period (if we're sticking around at McCormick's) is to respond to the text message I get at 6:30 and see if I get a response.

Nov 20 2014, 12:02 PM
The only other thing I'd want to know (with both artifacts) is whether there's info on these pieces specifically...is there record of them anywhere, ownership, and any sniff of the auction?
Lobo0705
Nov 20 2014, 01:44 PM
@Jack,
I sent a response to your message, that should be taken care of. Also edited my post to include the description of your persona.
@Mel,
Unfortunately you don't know enough about these particular items to distinguish them from any one of a thousand other pieces of valuable (or cheap knockoff) pieces of Chinese art.
A quick search for auctions in the CAS area:
11d6.hits(5)=5Nets nothing - so whatever the auction is, it isn't advertised anywhere, and very probably isn't legal.

Nov 20 2014, 04:05 PM
Just to clarify the response post. I don't feel like we know enough about official border crossings to quantify the threat. I'm trying to get Onyx to basically tell us it would be a really bad idea without having fake licenses (assuming it is a really bad idea) so we can move on to negotiating the coyote fee. Just for clarification in case all of that got muddled.
We still need to figure out what we're going to do for wheels when we get across the border. Buying a vehicle is going to be just a bit outside of our price range and stealing one probably won't be as easy this early in the evening.
Jack VII
Nov 20 2014, 05:04 PM
Well, at 10K there and back, that eats up nearly all of our advance (read: part of our pay) before we even consider possibly having to purchase extra gear, rent a car, etc. Jack is going to shut up since negotiating has started and Grease is way better at it than him.

Onyx's Info: I was going to actually offer him money from the get go to tell us about the border (a deposit towards any fee he might charge us for actual services rendered, of course), but sort of forgot that plan. Oops...
Just a note: I have an event tonight and won't get home until late in the evening. Tomorrow, I have an AM meeting, then a 4-hour drive, a HS football game, and then a 4-hour drive back, so I may not be on all that much tomorrow.

My half-brother's team has somehow ended up in the State semi-finals. Their team is not anywhere close to that good, but have somehow managed to hold out during the playoffs. On the plus side, if they somehow win tomorrow night, the finals are in New Orleans, which is only about an hour away.

Grease would not allow Mel to drive his BMW
That said, if the only illegal thing she's got is her 'deck, we could transport it across for her and send her over in the cab. I don't think it would be too odd for someone to travel across districts in an autocab; if you have business over there (like, say, you're a DJ whose going to a job in the other sector who doesn't own a car...) That way at least we'd have a car on the other side to get around.
Also, if we go the coyote route remember we can probably get 1-2 of my drones across as well, which is a significant increase in firepower.

@Grease
1) A minor point, but Mel's persona icon has a tragedy mask, like
this - so you can't actually see her features.
2) You can send Mel over in the cab certainly - just remember that she would be the only one that could take the cab back, since none of the rest of you will have visas stamped as entering the zone. (Not trying to nix the plan, just throwing it out there so that you realize that you are going to have to have the three of you use the coyote both ways).
3) Your Negotiation roll:
11 dice (you don't get the +1 for Pheromones), we'll call this "Annoying" to the NPC, so 10 dice in total
10d6.hits(5)=2Onyx rolls back
Cha+Negotiation of 7
7d6.hits(5)=2So you are unable to get her to budge on price.

1)Ahh- the mask, right. I updated my post accordingly.
2) Right- my thinking was it'd be easier to do that than to try to boost a car while we're over there. Maybe I'm overthinking it.
Per the extra work Onyx proposed, Grease would defer to Mel again; especially considering she would know the most about doing a quick matrix run.

We've already pretty much guaranteed him a 1000

If he just wanted a quick buck, he could have taken the retainer and told us that crossing the border would be child's play going into the CAS. He makes 1K, we get rolled up. Instead, he gave us pretty good warning that it would be a really risky attempt.

Sorry about that - I jumped the gun there. I don't see any reason why they (the team) would say no, and since the others are still limited posting, I think as long as you are okay with it, we should just go ahead
In the meantime, I'll edit my post to include you actually agreeing to go on it for Onyx.
To answer you question, no, it is just an action to switch modes, no problem doing so.
Before you attempt to Hack a Mark on the host, please let me know the ASDF of your deck and what programs you will be running.
Also, are you doing a Matrix Perception test on the host to gain information about it before hacking a Mark on it?

No problem...figured as much.
ASDF = 3,6,5,5

Most definitely doing Matrix Perception. Don't forget (don't know if you knew this before) my Codeslinger advantage is in Matrix Perception.
Lobo0705
Nov 21 2014, 05:14 PM
Got it
So, Matrix Perception:
Int 5, Comp 6, Hot Sim 2, Codeslinger 2 - Noise penalty of 1 for your location, Noise penalty of 2 for being on another grid, 3 points of Noise cancellation (2 for Signal Scrub, 1 for Datajack) yields no penalty, so 15 dice.
15d6.hits(5)=5Host rolls Sleaze + Logic
8d6.hits(5)=2You have 3 net hits.
You can ask 3 questions about the Host, these can be:
The rating of one of the targets Matrix attributes.
The grid the host is using
So you can pick the grid the host is on as well as knowing 2 of its attributes, or just 3 of its attributes.
Also - are you going to be running silent? If you do, it imposes a -2 penalty on your actions, but you aren't automatically spotted when you enter the host/perform actions. (I assume you weren't silent when you were outside the host performing your Matrix Perception, but it will be pertinent once you attempt to Hack it.)
Melpomene
Nov 21 2014, 05:41 PM
Let's have the Grid, plus Attack and Firewall.

Ok then:
Attack 4
Firewall 6
Grid CAS Local Grid
Hack on Fly
Logic 6, Hacking 6, Hot sim 2
14d6.hits(5)=4You successfully put a Mark on the host. I haven't put the host's rolls up since you don't have Baby Monitor running, so you aren't aware of its OS score.
You may now enter the host, and perform a Matrix Search for the information you are looking for, Not Publicized - so threshold of 3, base time 1 minute.
Int 5, Comp 6, Hot sim 2, Silent -2
11d6.hits(5)=2Would you like to spend an Edge or perform the test again at -2 dice? (So rolling 9 dice needing 3 hits).
Jack VII
Nov 21 2014, 06:08 PM
Just FYI, you probably can get away with not running silent while pulling the Matrix Search. A MARK is considered legitimate, so until you perform an illegal action in the Host, you shouldn't have to worry about Patrol IC (assuming Lobo isn't going to be a dick and say that the Patrol ICs instructions are to check every persona icon for an Attack attribute, indicating they are a decker, LOL).

That is one of the flaws of the system as designed (the way the rules work, I mean). From the perspective of "how would a host be run" why
wouldn't they do that? From a perspective of "how can we play this game" it makes breaking into a host virtually impossible.
In general, the way I work Patrol IC is that they check out your last action performed. So, as long as you are not performing Attack or Sleaze actions, and you have a Mark on your icon, they leave you alone. If you are NOT running silent and you perform an Attack or Sleaze action, they automatically detect that, and set off an alarm. If you ARE running silent, they have to beat your Logic+ Sleaze with Matrix Perception test.
Given that I probably could have explained that better, I'll let you roll 2 more dice (since you could have NOT been running silent and made the Matrix Search)
2d6.hits(5)=1With that extra hit, you find the file.
Now, you can make a Matrix Perception test on the file (again without needing to run silent).
You again roll 15 dice
15d6.hits(5)=4It resists
8d6.hits(5)=2You get 2 hits, so you can have 2 questions answered, this time they can be:
The most recent edit date of a file.
The presence of a data bomb on a file.
Whether a file is protected, and at what rating.
