Tanya smiles at Spokane's attempt to mend fences and sincerely hopes that Cynthia will make an effort to reciprocate.

The drone feed following the van shows that it is still driving at a rather lazy pace. The drone feed for the cars shows two more cars pulling up nearby and two men getting out of one. Suddenly the drone moves erratically as a flash of light comes from the garage/warehouse. When the drone rights itself there is a huge fire inside the building and both of the original cars look to be in pieces and burning. Several men emerge from the second pair of cars, running to where the two men had been tossed by the explosion as they were approaching the building.

>>Team [Sandy]: Frag! An explosion just leveled that building. I hope that you are seeing it. Does anyone need a rewind or something?<<

>>Nimue [Vlad]: The fragging building just blew up. Glad I was going slow here. I am checking on my men, but I may be down two. Where is van?<<

>>Spokane [Vlad]: I am not sure if games are being played, but I am on with someone else giving me almost same story you are. Was van at a garage building that just blew itself up?<<

>>Team [Tanya]: Sandy, I would like to see a rewind from just before the explosion. I am opening a second feed slot. Please send that to me and anyone else that wants it. Right now, I am thinking that we are still a go, but do I hear any different opinions?<<

*Told you to be careful... And I wanted one of those cars...*

Cynthia grimaces. >>Team [Cynthia]: I saw that yeah.<<

>>Vlad [Nimue]: I'm sending you the location. That explosion felt timed and not triggered, they would have waited for most of you to be in the garage otherwise I suppose, but I'm no expert on explosives, so... It confirms that one side probably killed the other though. Probably the guards, and they blew the place to avoid leaving traces. Which means the guards are probably higher in the food chain, or at least answering to someone who is. Sorry for your men.<<

She seems to hesitate then, and sighs >>Team [Cynthia]: I suppose I should mention that the men who came in those cars and probably got killed by the guards are...or were... mercenaries...<< She coughs lightly, shifting on her feet, and adds >>Team [Cynthia]: And that I sent the men who just arrived?<< She coughs some more >>Team [Cynthia]: And maybe that the mercenaries went there because they couldn't reach the Goldstein Building, what with the start of a riot and all that?<<

Tanya laughs. >>Team [Tanya]: Someone has been busy. Are some of these people the ones that attacked you at your house? And here we are. Steve, can you do a last check to see if there is any interest in the outer stairs, please?<<

>>Nimue [Vlad]: Two men injured, one of them badly. Cannot get too close to the building due to the fire inside. The cars were blown independently of the building as far as I can tell. I cannot stay long due to what I would suspect is the imminent arrival of the KE.<<

Cynthia grumbles >>Team [Cynthia]: The men in the two cars, who are probably dead now, are those mercenaries yes. There was only one mercenary who attacked me left alive, but I don't know if he was in one of the cars. The question is why were they killed. From what I can tell, the guards were dispatched around the time where the mercenaries went away from the GB. I know the protest was a bit sudden, but still, was that enough for them to be decide the cars were compromised and kill the mercenaries? Seems awfully easy... I mean if anytime the mercenaries are on the move and can't make it, their own side offs them... In that case they might relocate all of them. Not ideal but not really an issue either, after all their current hideout has probably been prepared well in advance, which probably wouldn't be the case for a new one. Which means it would be easier to find, and probably to take out.<< she frowns, pensive >>Team [Cynthia]: Maybe I should send some of the footage to the mercenaries when we're done here if we get spotted at some point. Maybe they'll have a few things to tell their employers. And possibly to us as revenge.<<

>>Vlad [Nimue]: Yeah don't worry about this place, nothing you can do about that now anyway.<< for a moment she considers mentioning the van, but decides to wait for his decision. She's updating its position from time to time anyway, so if he wants to go after it, he still can.

@Cynthia: I guess that would mean you are the other one talking to Vlad?

@team: They terminate failures. They killed their own wounded at the clinic where my friend was attacked. This is probably their standard MO. Probably doesn't make for loyal goons though.

@Vlad: I don't know for sure who else has you on call but I have a feeling who it might be and I don't think you are being played. If you recall though, I suggested following the van that was leaving not investigating the building. Had you done that your men wouldn't be hurt. That's not an I told you so, that's just pointing out that your suspicion is likely misplaced as far as I'm concerned.

Steve sends her drones out and lets everyone know that there does not seem to be anyone watching the stairs. Tanya turns to the others. >>Team [Tanya]: OK> I am going to the stairs. Give me two minutes then come on over. Unless I give you some indication that this is a bust.<<

As the three of you make your way quietly up the stairs, Spokane almost slips on the stairs but is graceful enough to avoid adding any additional noise. Tanya has the door open and ushers everyone inside, but she has a finger to her lips. You find yourselves on a narrow catwalk above the main floor. The catwalk extends a short distance to where flooring has been placed across the girders to provide additional storage space. You can see that additional support has been give to that section to support the stacks of various sizes of conduit stacked on pallets there. Below you is the large interior of the warehouse. From where you are, you can here the noise of music playing softly and the chatering of at least a couple of men. Most of the building is dimly lit with night lighting, but you can see the glow of a brighter light from somewhere on the main floor.

The junction is indeed slaved to the host and you can get your mark. The host is R8 and its values are 5/7/9/6.

@Spokane You can see a couple of small forklifts sitting idle on the second floor near what is probably an open elevator. Pallets of conduit pipe sit in rows waiting to be moved. The catwalk behind you leads to the door you used to enter the building. From near the edge of the flooring, you can see down to the cement of the warehouse floor, A light glows from underneath the flooring and you can hear music playing down there, too.

>>Team [Cynthia]: Alright, good news / bad news. Good news is there is a Host. Bad news however...it's a big one. No way I'll stay stealthy in that for long, if I even manage to do anything at all. Well no, I should be able to do some stuff but... It'll all depend on what's available right now. And on their Spider if there's one, but given the Host... If there aren't two we're lucky. In fact, the spider is pretty much the only way I'll get stuff in there, unless it's a fragging monster. Or...<<

She pauses, then grimaces >>Team [Cynthia]: There's a risk I can take. Could make things easier, or at least possible, but... Well...<< it'll hurt. That's what it'll do...

~~~~~~ OOC ~~~~~~
For a Host, the normal available ratings are fixed at DR, DR + 1, DR + 2 and DR + 3. So here we would have 8, 9, 10 and 11, keeping the same priorities it would be A 8, S 10, D 9, F 11.
Now it can be a weird Host with weird ratings of course, I wouldn't mind ^^ But it doesn't change much the consequences anyway.
A point that could be important: what about edge refresh? Any of the refreshing edge possibilities p56 of the CRB are applicable here? After the events of the afternoon I don't have edge anymore and... Well... If I'm doing this, I'll need it...
>>Sandy [Cynthia]: Yeah, I'll try.<<
Before she goes in, Cynthia adds two more marks on the junction, which are reflected on the Host. Its not the most useful of things in general, but she had a new idea so maybe... Once she's done, she sits back against the wall and slips into VR, then enters the Host, trying to disappear in the background. She knows her time is precious since she probably will be spotted quite fast anyway, so she doesn't loose time and quickly tries to locate the Spider and how good her stuff is. A Spider means more dangers, but it also means that she may be able to get what she wants... As long as she's not too strong anyway...
Of course, she could try to go for the nuclear option but... She'd really like to avoid that one... As she works, she grumbles a bit. A decker would have a much easier time here than she does. But... A decker wouldn't be able to do what she wants to try so if it works she'll have no reasons to cry...
Spokane and Laughing Dog provide physical security while Tanya sits near Cynthia's body. Cynthia knows that she has only a short window to operate freely before the spider begins to search for her. Hopefully it will be enough. The host is not very busy this time of night, but there is someone working on something in a cubicle located inside the small, secure building. Files have been removed from a container marked Eyes Only and a young woman is glancing through one of them. The rest are in neat stacks to her right and left.
Cynthia glances curiously at the worker. She would really like to get to the files in there, but first, she really needs to get to the spider: it's the only way she'll be able - maybe - to buy the time she needs...and more. If it works of course... She tries again to find her, this time filtering the icons in the Host to only keep those with an Attack rating, which would pretty much limit the results to the spider, probably the only one with a real deck.
In order to make her idea work, Cynthia considers two options. In the end, she decides to try to soften up a bit the Spider, to hopefully make things easier. She reaches out to the Resonance, sending tendrils of it in the direction of the Spider, trying to weaken her firewall.
~~~~~~ OOC ~~~~~~

The complex form is Diffusion of Firewall. Used at Level 5, the Fade would be 3S, so I don't need to roll to resist. The Complex Form is resisted by Willpower + Firewall. To make it worth it, I must have at least 3 net hits, more would of course be better, but... Well... The Spider probably has a Willpower of 3 if not 4, which means it resists with 9 to 10d, against my 13. I'll have to get lucky...
First turn, Cynthia has Initiative: 14+5d6 28, so 3 IPs.
Diffusion of Firewall: 3#13d6t5 5 5 5, I reach the limit each time, couldn't ask for more.
Except maybe that one of the three resists, the Spider will get a very crappy roll.

I made three rolls in case the first two are resisted (the Spider can't notice anything anyway, so it doesn't matter), but if the first resist roll is bad, I won't use more, just did this to speed things up a bit.

Cynthia seems quite pleased by this result. She only had a faint hope to be able to get such a good result, so obtaining it as soon is really nice. But of course, it's only the first step. Now, comes the main event, one that has both the potential to hurt quite a bit... and be a failure. She takes half a second to prepare herself, then modifies the tendrils of Resonance she sent to the Spider, to make her do what she needs: be registered as a legitimate user with admin privileges. Even if she succeeds, she will still have to hide from the Spider, but she's not the main danger here.

~~~~~~ OOC ~~~~~~
As long as Cynthia sustains the Diffusal of Firewall, the Spider has -4 on her Firewall, and of course, Cynthia has -2 on all her Resonance actions.
Puppeeter [5] (Threading, Defence, Fade): 11d6t5 3 5d6t5 1 13d6t5 8, first attempt fails (not enough net hits for a Complex Action), but awesome fade resist so no damage taken. The defence roll is a glitch though, so maybe we can assume I get that last net hit?
If there's no net hit due to the glitch, I tried a second time:
Puppeeter [5] (Threading, Defence, Fade): 11d6t5 5 5d6t5 2 13d6t5 4, this time I would have the 3 net hits required, but I'd take 2S for Fade.
The goal is to have the Spider (considered as owner of the Host for all intents and purposes) register Cynthia as a legitimate user with admin privileges. She already has three Marks on the Host, so in a way it's just making it official.
But right now, they are talking about the secretary's rather large cup size, referring in some detail to what had appeared on the feed of a hidden camera one of them has but in the office where the action takes place. Had she been in AR, Cynthia probably would have danced a little or at least clasped her hands in delight. Alright, maybe not. Still, she's really pleased with herself. After a second of self congratulations she sends >>Team [Cynthia]: Alright, the Host is mine. For the moment anyway. One second...<<. First, she takes a normal appearance as far as the Host is concerned and goes in some corner. That way, a cursory check from the Spider, even if she's able to notice Cynthia, would not be enough to suspect anything. Then, she starts by making an inventory of the devices currently slaved in the Host: it's probably not important to her, but Tanya and the others could probably use some of that.
If there are cameras, microphones, radios or sensors of any kind, she organises and sends the streams to the rest of the team as they become available, adding a layer of quick analysis about the security system on the plan of the building that she hopefully can find. In case there are drones - or devices riggers could be interested in - she sends the list to Sandy and Steve, mentioning that if they think something could be interesting, she can provide access.
Finally, once all that is done, she starts to look at the files in the Host: for a start, she's mostly interested in files concerning Grainger's orders, clients suppliers. Their finances, agenda, staff and communication logs.
@Cynthia You get the locations of several security cameras. All seem to be inside the warehouse area of the building. There is a security lock on both of the exits from the warehouse, the large doors leading outside and the smaller door leading into the office. The smaller secure building is a hole in the host, as if it does not exist there. You can get to the files you are interested in and it seems that the company is shorting its normal customers to work on the Goldstein Building project. Thee are numerous orders that are going unfilled and some customers are threatening lawsuits and claiming penalties for broken contracts. There are no guards listed for working in the warehouse.
Somehow you stumble into a back door of the Grainger financial statements. There are clearly two sets of books being kept; one for common consumption and the other for the important people. It is no secret to you that Graniger is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sampson Industries, but this spells it out in black and white. What you had not heard before is that fully 80% of the net profit of the company goes to fund a group of subjects headed by a man called the Grand Marquis. Unfortunately, those projects do not show up in any details on the Grainger financial reports so you learn nothing about them. You do see that they are providing vast quantities of conduit in many sizes to the Goldstein Building project, which accounts of nearly every nuyen of income to the company.
Cynthia takes a couple of seconds to think about what she found. It's the second time she found something about this Grand Marquis, and it looks more and more that this person is situated on the upper levels of this. All this. Identifying who he is could be a huge step forward. Of course, the question is "how"... It seems difficult to do from Probus' side. Maybe from the Woods at the reception?
More directly... If there are files regarding the "projects" here, if Grainger's money is used at 80% to finance those projects... Considering the level of security, especially in opposition to Avila, and the presence of the inside building... Odds are that at least one of the projects takes place here.
>>Team [Cynthia]: I found references of some projects financed by Grainger. And when I say financed, I mean they use 80% of their profits for that. There's no details from where I am, except the name of the leader of those projects. Or his nickname anyway. It's not the first time I encountered that name though, it looks like he's an important person in whatever they have planned. Identifying him is probably a must. Given the security here and the inside building, it seems likely that one of those projects is here. And if there's one of those projects here... There are probably more data to find about him... So I'm definitely voting for going into that inside building.<<
Once she's said that, she tries to identify who exactly are the important people who have access to the second set of documents. Could be fake names, but it could also lead to something too. Oh and now that she has a bit of time, she tries to identify who is the persona working in a cubicle in the small secured building: she didn't pay attention at the beginning because she had to find the Spider real quick, but...well...could be someone she could hack to find out more. She first checks to see if it's something she can do, and only then proceeds. She then looks at the files associated to the Persona - and especially the ones she's working one - while she runs a Trace, to determine where she is.
Cynthia, do you feel that the information we might find justifies that? If so, taking out the guards up here is doable if you can jam their 'links. Taking on the unknown number of guards below is still risky.<<
>>Team [Laughing Dog]: I can make one or more of us invisible and can try to stun one of them.<<
>>Team [Spokane]: I could shoot one or both, but my ammunition is explosive rounds and that sort of defeats the silent concept. I do have decent hand to hand combat skills, though.<<
@Cynthia Your estimate is that Vlad will not be able to stop the other van unless he significantly increases his speed.
>>Team [Cynthia]: There's no way to know beforehand. But whatever they have here, they obviously don't want anyone to stick their noses in it. Which often means that it's valuable. Will it help for what we want though... As for 'simple recon'... I got what I could from this Host - and I'm still checking a few things - but there's nothing really important in there. Which means it's probably in that other building. Does it matter if they know someone came in anyway, as long as they don't know who? Plus Vlad is on the tail of the van, I'm sure he can be persuaded to torch the place... Oh and I can use my rifle well enough, but that's all, so outside of activating the jammer...<<
What about the stuff Cynthia is looking for regarding the files and the unknown Persona in post #136?
Spokane has been keeping watch and checking the drone feeds. So far no opportunity to sneak a drone inside has presented itself. It may be time to force the issue. @ team: Cynthia what type of ammo do you have in your rifle? Maybe I can borrow some while we are staying quiet? Otherwise if Dog can make me invisible I'm sure I can take one out myself quietly. Two would make some noise though.
OOC: sorry about not checking in the last few days. My dad had a stroke and I've basically been living at the hospital when I'm not working or getting emergency guardianship and other stuff straightened out. I usually have plenty of time to check my phone, but these last few days has been rather busy.
>>Team [Cynthia]: Stick & Shock only. Does it change anything on the noise level? I suppose explosive ammo makes more noise but... I don't know anything about all that to be honest.<<
>>Team [Tanya]: I have a dart gun I can let someone have if they are skilled in using it. Otherwise, I think we are best served if Laughing Dog can make Spokane invisible so he can take one and I will take the other. "That is, if we are going for this? Is that the vibe I am getting?"
Matrix Perception: DR4, Firewall 7, Comcode? Would a deck have a com code if it is not being used as a 'link? If so, you get it.
Matrix Perception (extended): Programs Running (Smoke and Mirrors, Armor, Paintjob, Sneak, Tantrum, Virtual Machine), A4, S6, D5, Search
Hack on the Fly: Deck defends I6 + F7 + Hot SIM 2 = 15d6 Defend against Hack on the Fly: 15d6t5 5 Still a net hit, so two marks
Matrix Perception: You get a glimpse of the file currently being looked at and see that it is a set of blueprints for the Goldstein Building, but they do not look like the official, public plans. Suddenly the form begins to shatter and soon there is nothing left of the persona. It just disappeared.
OOC:
Take your time getting back in, Stuttrboy. We can wait if we need to. Sorry to hear about your dad.
Cynthia swears, wondering what happened. There was no Agent, which means the Marks shouldn't have been seen. After all, who checks constantly if there are Marks? But something happened nonetheless. A direct jack out? Must have hurt, it's pretty extreme...
>>Cynthia [Team]: There was someone - a decent Decker - working on the 'less than official plans' of the GB, but I lost her, which means it might get lively soon no matter what we do. At least on the Host side of things. So whatever we decide, we should probably hurry. <<
Cynthia keeps an eye on the Spider in case she starts to act in any way.
Bonus for Hot-SIM doesn't apply on defences.
What about the Trace result? And I suppose it's a reboot? Otherwise I still have Marks and knows where the Persona is in the Matrix.
Given that Cynthia has the Speed reading & Photgraphic Memory, just a glimpse of the plans should be enough to get a good idea of what is going on there, no? Or maybe at least to draw them later to be able to analyse what it means?
>>Team [Tanya]: Team choice. Cynthia, do you think that information is necessary? If so, is this the best way to get it or can you do it another way?<<
OOC:
You are right about the Hot SIM, so you succeeded even better. I did not mention an agent because I thought it was something that just filled a program slot and is not a program itself. The agent was scanning for marks and detected yours.
The decker rebooted.
Yes, your speed reading and memory will get some of the document but I did not think that you were taking the time right now to look at blueprints.
>>Cynthia [Team]: I don't even know exactly what information there is, so judging if it's important or if there are other ways... Well, no, for other ways, probably, but I don't know what it would be. Maybe in Samspon's Host, But this Host is already hard enough to deal with... And obviously the leader of the projects knows about them, but I only have a nickname.<< she pauses then for a couple of seconds, then adds tentatively >>Cynthia [Team]: There might be a way I could find out more, one they wouldn't be able to know anything about but... Let's say it would be a first for me, so I'm far from able to give any guarantee, in any direction.<<
As an afterthought, Cynthia requests from the Host the file the Decker was working on. Maybe there is a local copy of it...
The Agent takes a slot in the available programs of the deck yep. And it's kinda important since I mentioned I was going forward with the hack if there wasn't an Angent running (I would have used Reasonance Veil on the Agent to hide the Marks for example). It's done so it's not necessary to go back. I'll try to be clearer next time.
The "way" Cynthia mentions would be by going into the Resonance Realms (p140 to 142 of DT). Something a bit like for submersions, except the goal is different, since it would be to find data. The advantage is that we could do that in parallel from here (since whatever Cynthia finds won't have an impact straight away) and that way we'll give time to Struttboy without going forward too fast here.
@Team: You could share your plan. Maybe there is something we can do to help.
OOC: I'm mostly done with the other stuff, if anything I'm glad for the distraction. It's one of the few things I can do while I'm with my dad. I've been reading the source books again so I will be ready when things get back to, or rather closer to normal. My dad sleeps a lot so I'm just sitting here half the time. Can't seem to get on the other site but Anne gives me updates. Hopefully I can get back to the campaign soon or my coverage gets better.
>>Team [Cynthia]: Not for what I have in mind no, no one can. Unless you have some specialised Matrix skills I don't know about of course. Either we go now, we're reasonably sure we'll find something - though it's impossible to know how useful it'll be - but they'll know someone was here, or we go back and I'll try to find stuff by myself. Which... Well, you don't risk much... But I have no idea if I'll find interesting stuff that way. As for the first option, two elements to keep in mind: the van with the guards is approaching, and it's unlikely we'll finish by the time they come back; and Vlad and his men are coming in hot on their heels, which could help quite a bit as far as extraction is concerned.<<
Alright then smile.gif
Good "luck" (in french we have an expression "Bon courage", which could be translated as something like "Have courage" or "Be strong" or something like that, but I don't think there's anything close to it in english and the dictionary says it should be translated as Good luck. Which is kinda weird since luck has nothing to do with this but...)
I guess it's up the the Johnson then. My two cents? We leave and keep the fact that we were here a secret and maintain surprise for a more tactically useful situation, but I get paid either way. Spokane shrugs.
>>Team [Tanya]: Tempted as I am to do this, I think the best idea is to leave. for now. We have some information and can better plan another visit now that we know more. Time to come back to us, Cynthia.<<
The host spider makes you a copy of the blueprint file you asked for.
