What were looking for? A calculator? Something that tracks what the options selected are? I've got to be careful I don't invalidate the need for the SSG. If I eliminate the need for the sourcebooks.... brrr.
Perhaps a simple abrev. that would still require the books to fully understand....

Ok, downloaded it again, and this time it has the correct version info, but it's still doing the same karma problem.
As to the other problem, it's probably time I got myself a new copy of office anyways. Reinstalling doesn't help, but removing office makes the error messages go away. Time to see if they've changed anything since office 2000.
Oh, another thing. A friend and I are working on a program to create shadowrun goggles. I did the shadowrun part of it and he's doing the programing part of it, so I don't know much about the coding myself, but do you have any advice on ways it could export its files into the DAT files for the character generators?

Well, certainly nothing more complicated than, say, the Edges/Flaws calculator. Heck, if you wanted to make this one really cheap, just add a field in for Lifestyle multiplier, by default set to 1, and let the people with the book figure it out themselves.

I completely understand that you don't want to invalidate the need for books. Ideally I would like to see the name and multiplier for each edge or flaw, the limit of 5 edges and 5 flaws per lifestyle enforced, and some way of preventing incompatible edges and flaws from being taken together. Hey if you are going to dream, dream big.
Actually, I would be happy with just something that allowed the input of a final lifestyle modifier.

goggles? I'm lost here. Are we talking about a piece of equipment? If so, you can use the DATeditor to insert. The format is at:
Gear.DAT format at Shadowrun ArchivesNeedless to say, it's not immediately intuitive. The advantage of a flat file such as this is: anybody can edit it (no access db required), it's simple (no large XML tag scheme). and the indentation gives a simple structure to work with....
This is why the DAT files are so current and up to date... the efforts of volunteers other than myself. Let's give them a big hand!

Yes. with existing characters, if you remove any cyberware, an "essence hole" will exist. The level of your essence will NEVER rise from it's current setting. If you remove and add a new piece, the essence calculation will be correct. If you want to upgrade:
1) Remove the old piece
2) Click on the new piece setting grade
3) click Override price (next to cost)
4) click on the Add button and enter the DIFFERENCE in cost for the price
5) A notation will be made in the GM screen so don't think you're pulling anything.
Ths is true for both cyber and bioware.

There is now a SSG calculator. (NOTE: the point cost was already in the lifestyle selection combo list). This will work like the JAVA application demonstrated BUT better (naturally
). As per your request, it will determine prohibited combinations. When you click on APPLY, it will copy the settings into the Lifestyle page. One way might be to add them in with the Edges and Flaws, as suggested for beginning characters.

No, but you can crank up the DATeditor and edit the CYBER.DAT file to add an entry. Would this be to add to somebody's charisma? (There are edges to handle this, pheronomes 2, etc)
Remember I only support SR3 canon. You can make any changes you want to the files but "I only support SR3 canon."
There some negative options in the Edge/Flaws are regarding cyberware. What do you mean exactly? You want to add negative essence (to add back essence)? You need to be more specific.

Just looked at NSRCG 3.66d and I first want to say Hey that is fantastic! I love it. It will stop people from trying to take impossible combinations of lifestyles, but unfortunately it was not what I was requesting. Perhaps I wasn't being clear. What I would like to see added to the program is a way to modify the cost of the lifestyle based on the lifestyle edges and flaws starting on page 137 of the SSG. These modifiers are expressed as a percentage of the total lifestyle cost and can be used with or without the detailed lifestyle cost system. A simple box in which a person could place the total percentage increase or decrease would be enough.
Thanks for a fantastic program and for putting up with so many bothersome requests.

1. The math doesn't seem to work. I selected low all the way across the board and added two lifestyle edges for a total +0.15 modifier (Easygoing Landlord +0.05 and Escape Tunner
+0.1). The program only subtracted 1000
for the lifestyle instead of 1150
.
2. I then went back to edit the lifestyle and none of the settings seem to stick. None of the radio buttons were selected and the "Selected lifestyle edges/flaws" list was cleared.

Okay, I tested but never really 'bought' it. (The numbers were correct). Hmm. I've uploaded another version but it'll have the same date on it. Download the latest and give it try.
Note: Because of how it's built, the settings WON'T stick but be reset everytime if you go back to the calculator. actually, that's why I call it a calculator and NOT an editor. Sorry but that would take way too much time for very little return on the usage.

The lifestyle modifier for edges and flaws seem to work now. Didn't do a lot of in depth tests just messed around. As for the setting not sticking, I realized after sending the last message that in earlier versions of the program that once you had bought a lifestyle on subsequent edits the lifestyle selection box was greyed out anyway. So nevermind, I was lost in the bit bucket again.

I'm getting an attribute reset error in BeCKS. Steps to reproduce:
1. Start a new character. Assign attributes/race.
2. Change race on chargen screen. This correctly resets all attributes to 1.
3. the Attribute cost resets properly on the generation screen, but you still "run out" of Karma as if the attributes had already been bought.
The problem lies in the SpentKarma= and RemainKarma= fields not updating properly in the [Karma] section.
The Encephalon isn't adding itself properly to Int for determining the cost of Int-based skills.
Also, is there any option for allowing someone to exceed the racial modified limits at chargen without using Edges and Flaws?

Hi mcmackie,
Valkyrie Module and CCOC are now fully capable of being used by external programs.
(VM can insert Cyberdecks that CCOC later edits and so on.)
[ VM and CCOC capable of this will be released tomorrow ]
VM can also be used in NSRCG, since it now even exports Effects the way NSRCG does (+1BOD and so on, and even +1DJK and +1MNE).
The code to use either VM or CCOC in a VB application is about 10 lines long; I will send you it if you want, or you might want to send me the source code of NSRCG so I inject the code myself.
Anyway, talk to me ! all 3 programs are ready to be integrated, let's do it !

The only potential issue I see is that the cyber section in particular, and also to a smaller extent the deck section are going to be seriously deprecated by this. Specifically, will all our old sr3 files become meaningless?

As far as I can see, these sections are going to be untouched at first; the only change is going to be adding an "Invoke Valkyrie Module" button to the Augmentation Page, and adding a special "cyberdeck" item that will be edited using CCOC.

The easy answer to this is... Use the XML output and make whatever transforms you require. Possibly Dreamweaver can even use the XML file as well. For more information on XML Transforms that are already written, or other information about those functions, try this topic:

Ah, here's an interesting bug/feature/inconsistency: the NSRCG cannot handle multiple skill specializations properly. This should be possible after chargen, but under the current rules it doesn't appear possible. In fact, many of the rules in pgs. 82-84 regarding skills and specializations don't seem to be followed correctly. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

I've got a question for ya, mcmackie: what do the "IntelligenceMax=" and similar fields mean? They're supposed to be the named attribute's racial modified limits, yes? But, when I go and manually edit them (in an attempt to make a custom race for a player--long story), it seems that the NSRCG does not actually use these values at any point in the creation process, at least not with BeCKS.
Is there any way to change the racial modified limits under BeCKS without messing directly with the system or turning rules off, which has its own oddities (namely the inability to find out how much Karma the resulting character requires)?

Hi McMackie,
some time ago, I reported a problem with the opening of sr3 files.
Now the problem has gotten worse.
I have 3 copies of NSRCG installed on various PCs:
- 1 copy on my PC at work. The version is 3.62. The program is installed on a WinXP Pro OS installed PC, for which I have the Administrator privileges.
- 1 copy on my girlfriend's portable PC. The version is also 3.62, and the PC is running a Win98.
- 1 copy on my own PC at home. I recently (last week) upgraded to your latest version, and the PC is running on WinXP Pro, for which I also have the administrator privileges.
The problem: I created characters using my PC at work (I know, creating SR3 characters at work is BAD
). I copied the .sr3 files at home, then tried to open them on my own PC: it failed. I tried on the portable PC, it also failed. All .sr3 files created on my office PC have failed to open on my home PCs.
I'll upload the error message ASAP, but it's the same as I already reported.
What kind of data in the files can prevent them to be opened on another PC ?

Why does, when adding karma to an existing character never shows the correct available karma?
ie. Got a basic character, finalised etc. then i add 50 karma, and press the set button, and it gives me 45 available, 5 spent and 6 karma pool.
Am i missed a rule here, whereby every 10th karma gained goes into the pool, or is it a "bug" in the program?
Sorry if its been discussed elsewhere in the thread, but there are 22 pages to look through
Thx in advance

Jun 14 2004, 04:26 PM
Every 10th karma gained goes into your karma pool if you're human. If you are any other race, it is every 20th.
I think there's also a flaw which will slow this down. [edit] There is. Bad karma. It doubles the amount of karma between pool points (20 for human, 40 for meta). [/edit]

My take is that you should add the additional Adept Power to the ADEPT.dat file as a new Adept power rather than a Skill.
Eyeless Blond
Jun 14 2004, 11:27 PM
Also keep in mind that you're only *supposed* to be able to take Physical skills (at .25/lvl) or Combat skills (at .5/lvl) under Improved Ability. This is another place where the NSRCG differs from canon.
If it's possible, I'd like to see an option that gives you Karma pool *without* actually spending the Good Karma point. In other words, adding 50 Karma to a character gives you 50 Karma and 5 Karma pool as a human, or 50 Karma and 2 Karma Pool as a different meta. This is an alternate way to interpret that particular rule, one at least as popular if not moreso than the BeCKS series of houserules, so it should be included as an option.

hm, I wonder if this should be some kind of disclaimer. Oh well, here it is:
Alone of all the stuff in the NSRCG, the equipment and other .DAT files are meant to be easily editable by the end-users. This is mostly to save mcmackie's time, so he can spend it on fixing the actual program, and leave the dat files to volunteers. So, if you spot an error in a data file, I suggest you correct it yourself and send it to Mcmackie as an email attachment, noting what you changed (possibly using a DIFF output, or at least saying what line you changed) and why (possibly including book page numbers). That way everyone wins: we get things integrated into the new releases faster; and mcmackie can spend more time fixing the more complicated errors in the program code.

@Namergon: Do you copy the files to a floppy or other form of mass storage (ie: flash memory, memory sticks, CD's DVD's (what a waste, but who knows) or do you email them to yourself? I've found (especially with floppies) that just about any file utterly hates being on a floppy, and (recently) I've noticed a lot of my mass media storage files went wonky and only worked on one of six cd drives that I have laying about. Emailing them to yourself, in some sort of zipped file (as long as there is no compression, I've found with some programs (winzip) it messes with the file) is probably the 'safest' way to get the files from place to place.
It could also help to have all the same versions of the generator. The best solution if you're using floppies because you cannot for whatever reason email the file to yourself, is to have like 12 floppies and copy the file on to all of them. =P
@Everyone who cares: I'm working on adding all of Rayguns weapons into the dat file, and even giving them a book of their own ('Raygun's firearms') Its slow going, but I hope to have it done by the end of summer. Bug Report: ver 3.66a (I Dl'd it earlier this week)
==Lifestyle purchasing==
I attempted to purchase a home for my character using the SSG calculator built into the program. Upon finishing, I discovered that I forgot to make my lifestyle permanent, so I went to 'Edit' it accordingly.
After which, I thought the resultant amount left didn't quite add up. I still had this feeling of being shortchanged even after I removed the lifestyle.
So I started a new character, and went straight to lifestyle after giving myself 400,000 bucks. I brought SSG all-low for a month. Then I edited that one to make it permanent. Then I removed it. I ended up with about 389,000 or thereabouts, the exact amount left after I brought a month of lifestyle, despite having a blank lifestyle sheet and no equipment or spells yet.

Just wait until Running Wild hits the market ...
Maybe then you'll get rules for Vampire-PCs ... and maybe then macmackie will update the NSRCG accordingly, since technically that shouldn't be a problem at all, it just demands the appropriate handling routines in the program itself. Simply changing the DAT-File is unlikely to do it, since even the common house rules on Vampire-PCs include certain special rules that aren't reflected by racial modifiers or a simple listing of special powers ...
