I was looking at the XML output of the program (was thinking of putting together my own custom XSL stylesheet) and ran across a problem. They way the program is set up, the background information is dumped straight into CDATA. The problem with this is that the disable-output-escaping attribute is not supported by the Mozilla family of browsers.

That means anyone looking at one of the xml character sheets using netscape or Firefox sees this:

...rather than the parsed HTML.

Has there been any consideration for changing the way this is handled so that it either doesn't contain all of that HTML or is stored in a proper XML structure so that it can be displayed correctly?

I'll look into it. Should be simple enough to strip the HTML code.

Another suggestion: Single cybereyes and accessories. The rules for them are on MandM, p. 44. Cyclops only have one eye, and can therefore only use one cybereye, so buying a pair is rather useless. I don't imagine it being too difficult to add in an option for single eyes and accessories.

Added to the Cyber.DAT file.... Anyone could have done this themselves. Or added their own custom cyber item.

Down loaded the generator again yesterday after my Pc Blue screened me on friday.

There seems to be an mistake with the costing of Melanin Control. My Copy of Sota has at .25 points but the generator has it as 1. Also there's no microscopic vision option...

Will be fixed now. Ummm. what microscopic vision? I can't find the cite. Please let me know the book/page and I'll look into it.

I just discovered this lovely program, so I decided to get it...I try to install it, I get this error:

Setup Fatal Error: Unable to generate Installation Log File

So I get an already installed version, etc etc from one of my friends, I try to run it and I get a Runtime Error 68: Device Unavailable. A bit peeved, I copy the files to my PSP (for some damn reason, this comp won't let me put files on a CD) and transport it to my other computer. I try to run it and I get an Error 339: Something about an "MSLCOGX32" file or whatever is not registered correctly, yadda yadda. So...what ze heck is the problem?

Things like this are typically permission problems. Usually you don't have administrative priviledges and so cannot add programs. Sometimes there are programs that prevent installation of OCXs (system protection,Norton, etc).
Since very few people complain about it and I've never had a problem installing on any machine, I cannot replicate and solve. sorry frown.gif
mcmackie
Okay, I think I've got everyone BUT... you'll have to test yourself. There is a new version of the program that includes the high/low character generation rules from Mr. Johnson's Little Black Book.
Since changes so many things in my program, I'm only releasing thru this link. After enough time and bugs have been collected, I'll post to my regular webpage.
Let me know what you think.

I see that many people are working SR4 character generators (Good Luck!). I'm still waiting on my copy of SR4 to show up so I can figure out where and how to contribute. cool.gif
Aku
was that all you added for the new version? is there a full update list you have somewhere?

Sorry, don't have a list. In effect, I've tried to catch all of the posted bugs. So if you see it listed, I tried to fix it (unless otherwise noted). The major improvement is the addition of high/low level character generation from MJLBB (as noted above).

Hello McMackie,

first I wanted to say many thanks for your continuing work on the Generator Program. (Just returned to SR after a long absence and was very glad to find your program to crank out all kinds of NPCs and PCs.)

I've installed the new version from the link in your post and seem to have stumbled over an error:

Your old program (3.68 from your webpage) had the option to put in a number for "Max. Availability number for new characters" under the head "options" - "program settings".

With the new program I get "Do not display Items with Avail > 6" at the same place, but didn't find an option to define the availability number itself. In fact, the program will not allow a starting character made with the Priority System (Default) to buy equip with a higher Availability than 6 and advises to check the options button if I try to add something.

Did I miss something obvious?

Thanks,

Folkert
mcmackie
You're correct. I must've been considering changes to this and forgot it... New version now posted. Please try and let me know.
McShaw
Just downloaded and installed. The new version works perfectly! smile.gif

Many thanks!

Great job ... as usual. Thanks again, mcmackie.

Back again with a few things:

1. The generation method "Sum to 10" has no options for High or Low Level campaigns. (Don't know whether this was intentional.)

2. If generating a PC under the High Level Campaign option, attributes and skill are still capped at 6.

3. Somehow I don't seem to be able to build a spell-casting PC with the new 3.69 version as the "Spells" tab under the header "Magic" is always greyed out.

Sum-to-10 is a non-canon option, and not really conducive to high/low campaign modification.
FrostyNSO
We worked one out on paper. You just keep the point values the same, and adjust the numbers to reflect those in the high-level priority system.
Fortune
But really, it's a lot of unnecessary work for a limited market, when MJLLB rules or BeCKS are quite usable for those that want a variant level campaign.

1. Fortune answered this one... There are no official rules for Sum2Ten. I've only included them for backwards compatibility.
2/3. Again, you're correct.

Unfortunately, this is a very complex change to the program. Between real life issues and not being able to devote extended periods of time to this... the testing suffered. Hence, my posting it here rather than on my main web page. frown.gif

On the other hand, with this change: You now have the ability to customize more.. To understand, open the NSRCG.DAT file. cool.gif

Edit: Forgot to mention: New version is posted at prior link.
Thanks for all the help and expecially the debugging feedback!

I already suspected this might be reason but I wanted to mention it nevertheless, just in case.

Ack!

Just to make sure I did not give the wrong impression: I certainly did not want to complain, just to point the erros out as testing feedback.

Just downloaded and installed 3.69 (16.10.).

The caps on attributes and skills work fine now with the High Level Campaign Option, but the problem of the greyed-out "Spells" tab seems to persist. (At least for me.) frown.gif

Never mind, I had missed McShaw's post with similar problems. Getting the new version fixed it.

First off, let me just say fantastic work, it's made life so much easier for me and the rest of my gaming group.

I was just wondering if i could add a few suggestions, im not a programmer so i can't play with the source code myself but I had the following ideas to help improve upon the program:

1. Making knowsofts/skillsofts show up in your skills section instead of, or as well as, gear, Adding a tag like "[K]" for knowledge "[A]" activesoft etc.. to distinguish them from true skills

2. The ability to customise a weapon you already have - ie adding gas vent 2, scope etc to a weapon you already own, or customising its damage/weight, rather than having to add a whole new custom weapon, then remove the old weapon. (applying this to vehicles would be great too if possible).

3. The ability to "unspend" karma. I saved my character while i was playing around with what skills i would buy, but when i reloaded later and decided to change i found that though i could remove/alter the skills by turning the rules off, i could not get a karma refund so had to go back to a much earlier save.

4. When you buy a stackable item you already have, it does not add to a current stack, i.e. if i have 3 clips of 15ammo, and buy another clip, i end up with a stack of 3 and a single. The "update count" button allows you to decrease the amount you have of a stack of items, but will not let you add/buy more.

5. Being able to make a "custom" print out page with just the sections you want on it would be great, but not sure how hard this is to setup. For me being able to put skills/gear/weaps/contacts onto one page, without the bio, banking info etc of the main page would be great, whereas others might like a page with spells/contacts/vehicles/weaps etc.

6. An option to print out the weapons page without ammo.

Once again, i thank you for this amazing program that has taken a lot of tedious work out of keeping characters updated smile.gif
Aku
is anyone else having problems adjusting the custom BP under options?
Trax
I have 3.69 and now when I load up a character, it makes a bunch of noises and the attributes are set to 0. Nothing I do in it fixes the problem.
Straight Razor
PsyAdept - way of the magican. When you buy a point in this and then remove it. the spell points stay in the spells tab. In tangent on closeing the program the data dose not clear from the program. I'll go to start a new char and have to go foward and unspend points.
Paul
Once again McMackie rocks.
omi_aoine
I`m a great Fan of your Character Generator, and i used it for nearly every character i created for SR3. I am also a great Fan of Shadowrun 4 and so i would like to see the NSRCG with SR4 rules. Is there any possibility that we will become a NRSCG4?
Aku
Since McMakie hasnt posted here since Oct. I wouldnt hold your breath....

Mcmackie has stated that he isnt going to make a 4ed generator, he is willing to give others the source code so they can make one.

This is mostly true. I've been beset by RL (Real Life) and find free time hard to allocate to this project. I've made the code available to people who ask for it correctly (stated on my webpage).... a "hey dude, give me" will not work. I've posted a poll that should make clear what I need.
Given the changes to chargen for SR4, there is is almost no code to salvage to create the SR4 version. I've had nobody step us as willing to help in programming (lots of people who can work on DAT files, thank you!). If I started this, it would take some time to even program it. So my question is simple, is there any real demand for it?
Also, I've posted the most current version to my website that includes high/low level campaign rules. This was already posted in these pages but many people may not have seen them or realized that they could directly link/download from here.
P.S. I've lost track of bugs (been out of it). Could you repost any bugs that still persist with this version (3.69). Some of them seem to be from prior versions. For those you good enough to post the version number with the bug report (thank you smile.gif )

have a friend that said he might be interested in working with you, he is a professional code monkey.

Hi there, i like this program, it is making my life so much simpler.
One question i have at the moment thoght is after you have finalized a character, and then added some karma, how do you spend the karma to increase an attribute?

I can see how you can spend karma to update skills, but i cant see how the attributes work. Am i missing something simple, or do you have to turn off the rules and manually calculate and deduct the specific amounts of karma?

The characters i am using are all built using the priority method.

Regards

Juzzman
langolas
As I've done it, when you go to Attributes, you have the left and right arrows, just like when you were increasing/decreasing them. Taht is how you should do it here as well, and it should tell you if you don't have enough Karma.

Some Bugs

In 369

Combat Sense Adept Power
Purchasing a new level of the power, say from 1->2, increments the combat pool bonus dice by the new level rather than the new level less the old level.

MNE flag
When you have a character open that possesses an mnemonic enhancer and then load another character without such an augmentation, the effect remains. The newly loaded character gets the cheaper prices for skills.
I have not tested this with the cognition metamagic.

I have other troubles with the MNE flag and version 368 where seems the effect seems to vanish from the character, such that I had to create a 0 cost bit of gear to reapply the MNE flag, but I have not noticed how to repeat that one. Fiddling with the char file to repair the damage from before I noticed it has been informative.

In that line, were there any dat file changes between 368 and 369?
(I use modified gear files and am leery of attempting to merge them.)

Thanks for building it anyway. Very handy.

Thanks for the tip. I found that it worked on the version i had at work, but not in the main version i use at home. I removed and re-installed the program at home, and now they both work.

Thanks for the pointer Mate

I'm having a problem with v 3.69. I can't figure out how to edit the build points for points creation system. It says "Default High/Low points set in NSCRG.DAT in DAT directory. Opening up the "data" directory under NSCRG, it gives the options of adept, bioware, contacts, cyber, deck, edge, gear, magegear, spells and vehicles.

Am I missing something?
Machine
Actually, never mind. I Just got it. Thanks, though.

My .dat files were listed as vcd wrapper files. I just opened them with notepad, though, and it let it happen. No biggie.

Although....why /are/ they listed as VCD wrapper files? That's sorta confusing.
Kagetenshi
Because .dat is a ridiculously common extension, and some applications (like VCD) claim it as their own.

It's a good reason to avoid .dat where possible. Avoiding extensions would be even better, but if what you're putting in it is plaintext, just use .txt.

Yeah, I thought of using a simple txt extension but didn't want people routinely hacking the files... this keeps the hackers out. Besides by now, many people refer to the ability to "edit the DAT files". In effect, a defacto standard that I would have difficulty changing. I wanted it more complex without making it so hard that people couldn't modify if they wanted to...

New version posted (same 3.69 but different compile date)... should fix the MNE flag but and others... Additionally, many people were unable to comprehand how to edit an INI file so I put the ability to change the default build points again.
Let me know how it works out. sleepy.gif
Paul
Thanks because we hated the default high/low stuff. We do a lot of tailored gaming, that requires some different levels of points on a regular basis.
ChuckRozool
What are the chances of making a "super simple" CharSheet? Like ascii based,
no tables or graphix, kinda like MechDesigner had a simple mech record sheet?

A way to auto-fill one of the official SR3 sheets?

Are you not supplying the source code, for the app anymore?
Calvin Hobbes
Any chance of an override cost option for things other than gear, such as foci, vehicles and decks?
bit_buckethead
I am having a problem with the biography section in the XML character sheet not displaying properly. All of the information runs together into one big text block. Is there any way to fix this. It is happening with the latest version of NSRCG 3.69 3/22/06 for Windows 98 and XP.
Trax
Is McMackie no longer supporting the program? I just recently got a new pc and unfortunately have no install version on my old one. I went to his website it does not load. Plus the fact that nobody has posted in this thread for almost a year as I just noticed...
warrior_allanon
Trax, shoot me an email and i'll see if i can mail you a zip file with it
Trax
Thanks for the file Warrior_allanon.

I really hope someone can help me with THIS now: nyahnyah.gif

However, it does not work on Vista. Unless I install it the old way in safe mode perhaps? I don't know. I can't figure out how to do that on this OS right now..

Right now I get an error that says:

Run-Time error '339':

Conponent 'comdlg32.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

This is version 3.69, installed normally on Vista through the setup. During the installation it did open up a window stating that one of the files in the installation was older than what I currently had, and I naturally kept the newer file. The rest of the installation works fine, but trying to start the program and start Character making makes that error above pop up.
Tiralee
I realise that this thread might be long dead with the release of 4th Edition and all, but I would once again like to thank the good Sir McMackie for the best damned character generator I've used.

We had a change of guard and a few newbies...within 20 minutes they were cranking out characters. I have never seen that done before.

Again, Thank you for such a valuable resource.

Tir.

(Now, if only the Allied spirit thingy was finished grinbig.gif )
Vagabond Elf
I had some verteran players building characters with this last night, and they were all being very impressed with how smoothly it worked, so thank you muchly for that!

However, I've had some weirdness happen. After saving a file, NSRCG can see it - I can load it, edit it, etc. But Windows 7 won't see it. I can't copy it, attach it to an email, I can't even see it in windows explorer.

Any ideas? Given how old the last post is I didn't bother reading the thread, so forgive me if there's somethign burried in there.
Stahlseele
yeah, that is normal since windows vista . . look up virtual storage or something like that . .
look into the program itself and watch where, exactly, the save path is going . .
