Great, another edition. *sigh*

Well, I, for one, welcome our new draconic overlords. I'm excited about everything save Fifth Edition. I'm cautiously excited, but I'll wanna see how big of a change it is. They specifically say it's building on 4th edition, so here's hoping my huge pile of books will still be relevant.
horvagab
Seeing as I might actually have a group I can play next year a new edition with streamlined matrix rules and less books (at least crunchwise) might be a good starting point...

What concerns me is, if 5E becomes the default ruleset for both SRR and SRO.

I like the idea of having a good, solid "runnign start" crunchwise, if they were close parallels to 4E. That goes away, if they use 5E.

It's great to see that Shadowrun is doing fine - launching that many new games is a sign of success. But should I do now with all my 4A rulebooks? %)
tsuyoshikentsu
I'm kind of interested to see what they do with it. Sounds like they haven't changed too much--and I for one would LOVE some better Matrix rules.

For all I remember, they planned to use 4E as a base for 5E. It's probably the same as 2E-3E Transition.

Yeah. It's not like this isn't pretty much copypasing what EVERY previous new eidition was supposed to bring.

Or Overextension. I hope it isn't, but especially a minis game is a fantastic way to sink cash if it doesn't take off. The idea of a minis game reminds me of that infamous Chris Lonsing newsletter of old ...

I second that. Just when I have gotten used to the last new edition.

I do like the idea of an in-gameworld news feed though.
Blade
Told you so: A new edition with promises for better Matrix rules nyahnyah.gif

First of all THE END OF THE MAYAN CALENDAR (and Awakening) IN SHADOWRUN IS IN 2011, NOT IN 2012. This has always been the case, this has never been retconed. mad.gif

Other than that, I'm curious to see what the new products will turn out to be. I'm really on the fence about SR5, seeing how I disliked many things (both fluff and rules) of all new books since WAR! But I'll give the developers a last chance. I hope that the "grittier and deadlier" will survive the first additional books.

And I really don't like the sound of "Increased Gear Option". I always felt that Shadowrun had too many toys with complicated special rules. I hope that these increased gear option won't make it even worse. And I really really hope that it's not a way to be able to release even more stupid and useless gear books sold to players so that they can raise their character's power by 5% for $10. There are already enough stupid power boost DLC in my video games, I don't need them in my RPG.

I don't know a thing about boardgames or card games, but bringing in Ross Watson is good news all way round, hope he will do some work on fifth edition. The same I can say about Cool Mini, they will most definitely be doing the miniature project. They are, at the very least, a familiar devil.
NiL_FisK_Urd
I hope they also fixed the stupid vehicle rules and perception rules (esp. vehicle perception)
Stahlseele
I thought SRR uses a Variant of SR3 for their basic system?
Abschalten
If they would unfuck technomancers and adepts, I would be very thankful.
hermit
Technomancers are powerful enough as is. They need to be properly rebalanced.
apieros
Call me cynical, but I don't expect a big improvement over 4e. And I'm not looking forward to CGL restarting the splat treadmill.

OTOH, I am looking forward to Shadowrun Returns. So there's that, at least.
DuckEggBlue Omega
I hope 'grittier and deadlier' indicates the return of LMSD Damage.

Everything there is something I already do, so I'm either going to be really happy with my new SR games and broke, or... less broke.
bannockburn
I hope not.
I hope it means an overhaul of the armor / encumbrance / body system.
Xenefungus
To all the people wondering what to do with their rulebooks: Sell them off NOW if you don't want them anymore! Chances are most people haven't heard this piece of news yet, so they are still worth something. In a few weeks, this may very well be different. I sold mine half a year ago and got a really good price (complete german SR4 series), so from my experience I can only encourage you. For me personally, it was also a great chance to go all digital from now on smile.gif
bannockburn
Never. I don't sell books, ever. ^^

Please no. It also depends on the horrible horrible floating TNs nyahnyah.gif
Would even be a won't-buy-argument for me.
Thanee
I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully they will manage to keep the smoothness of 4th Edition alive, while removing the ambiguity and some balance issues. smile.gif

About the Deckbuilding Game... also looking forward to it, that could be fun. smile.gif

But "it features the very best designers in card games" ... I won't say that they are not great, but the "very best" list would certainly have to have a few other names on it, like Richard Garfield. wink.gif

More sceptical about the Miniature Game, but we will see ...

Boardgame also sounds cool. Lords of Waterdeep is a really good game. If they try for something similar, that's certainly a good thing.

I would really, really like a Shadowrun game that is similar to Descent, though (but with game-controlled enemies, aka Castle Ravenloft, etc., not an actual game master; could just play regular SR then).

And the computer games are in development for some time now, absolutely looking forward to those.

All in all, this will hopefully be a good year for Shadowrun! My best wishes to Catalyst - make the right decisions! smile.gif

Bye

Im okay with this as long as they do something to alleviate just how unclear and open for ten different ways of interpretation 4e is. Discussion threads are great and all, but being able to discuss cool concept without arguing the meaning of the RAW would be nice to.
Faelan
The biggest thing that irks me is the "More gear" comment. Really as if SR does not bog down at times into Mallrun the Game of Black Market Acquistions, where the most common question is what book is that in. Play not shop.

Awesome! So excited for this! Not excited about having to read the EXACT SAME COMPLAINTS that I read everytime a new edition is released...

Fifth edition Deadlier combat, really was this a problem? Another matrix revision. Shadowrun could do with an open Beta if it really wanted to fix what's wrong.
Two failed projects cards and DMZ resurrected. Will these incarnations get the audience they need?
A boardgame? Ok so some of this is obviously reaching for some new audience.
As a staunch tabletop guy with limited time I'll hold out hope for the new edition and the Stormfront plot. But with the glaring problems we've seen since revised 4 came out I'm prepared for "2013 year of the flames".

Oh live feeds sound interesting.
NorthernWolf
Stoked. Love it. Hated 4th edition so much we Hacked another game's rule set just so we could play with the awesome SR Setting.

Backer for Both SR Games via Kickstarter, so super excited for those, and anything more Shadowrun (card games etc) is always a good thing.

As someone said above, this just means SR seems to have good backing and support, so that's always a good thing!

I kinda wish that people would hold off on Next Edition Hate™ until we at least know something about it, aside from the fact that it's planned.

Deckbuilding Game: Meh, nice for a short game but the genre never excited me too much. And the market has been saturated twice over
Miniature Game: DMZ part 2? Meh. Also, another heavily saturated market.
Board Game: Playing the evil side for a change of perspective sure sounds like a cool concept, if the mechanics work I'm in.

Which leaves the elephant in the room...the prophecy has come true, CGL did not release errata till doomsday and now announce an errata edition on doomsday biggrin.gif
Mechanically, 4th Edition is the first edition of a whole new game and accordingly has its flaws, so a fixed Edition was overdue. I only wish I could muster more confidence in CGL's abilities to produce that...as things stand, reading that "Catalyst had the pleasure of fact checking Jordan’s story" caused a spontaneous sigh.
Pariahpaladin
I wasn't thrilled with 4th ed's rule-set. I am optimistic about a retweaking of it into 5th though. It's nice to have a clear direction for the game line as a whole. Now I just hope it pays off.

And the wondering of what will come begins...

I see some chance of success for Boardgame, especially if they let Pegasus Games (the German publisher) handle it. Pegasus is one of the large publishers of Euro-Style tabletop. In that market, they know their shit. Not sure if an American company is capable of making such a decision, though.

The notion of Catalyst being asked to fact-check anything after War...

But it made sense. Shadowrun Returns is supposed to be in-continuity with the tabletop universe, so Jordan needed to make sure anything SRR said wasn't contradicted by other gaming material. Since Catalyst is the caretaker of continuity, he asked them to fact-check.

Working on uncovering secrets on shadowruntabletop site. Not sure if doing it wrong or just working like its supposed too. Getting snippets of cover art, anyone else working at it?
Stahlseele
YotC was never and will never be Catalyst Material.
That was still Fanpro, if i am not misremembering.
So it was his own Material. And SRR is set in the 2050s.
While SRO is set in the 2070s. As is SR4.
If they keep that up at least, SR5 will be in the 2090s . .
Rebooting to 2060 would be an idea, to bridge the gab between the two.

No hate here. Just not thrilled. SR4 works fine mostly, but I can see that a new edition is due. SR4 ran longer than SR3 and 2, so it's okay on that front.
Still, it is an uncertainty, and I hope the changes won't be too grave. Personally, I don't need deadlier and grittier, nor do I need more toys to play with. I didn't even need the gearporn releases.
My most sincere hope is that character conversion will be possible and easy to do, since I do not really get to play very often and I would like to see them develop a bit more.
So yeah. I'll have a look, but I don't hold my breath.

And I'm really just uninterested in the cross-genre stuff. Worst case scenario is, it tanks, best case is it brings new players to the RPG. If it looks good, maybe I'll even buy it wink.gif

The Live Feeds sound interesting too.

The rest? Meh.

About the game I got to the little birdie 1, according to the message I'll never solve it on my own.
So I guess I need your help, or something?

EDIT: Oh stupid me, it's probably a twitter related thing. Probably has to do with this new Jackpoint site...
Tashiro
I'm reasonably optimistic about this upcoming edition. I would like to see smoother Matrix rules, and I would like combat to be a bit more lethal, so this is a bonus for me. The idea of having gear be a bit more modular, giving them options, is also to my liking - it fits with the evolution of the setting, I think.

The other things? Well, we'll see. I did own DMZ when it first came out, so I might get the figures - even if we don't wind up using them for the tactical combat, having minis for the game would be nice. The card game, I'm curious to see what it is like, I might be able to use it as a springboard for sessions.

I'm definitely wanting more information.
Draco18s
I'm certainly curious about the deck building game. It says that it's cooperative which is different from the other deck builders I've played (and don't own personally).

The minis game I'm a little wary of, as it appears that your gang/army/faction can grow in power by playing, which seems to me to be a balancing problem (don't get to play often? Hope you like losing).

5E I'm on the fence about. Ideally it will come in modules that simply overwrite sections of 4E and allow players and GMs to decide which sections they want from which edition (and of course, just how good are these new matrix rules?)

SRR/SRO: excited

The board game looks interesting, but will wait to see how it turns out. I highly recommend that Catalyst looks at attending a convention like Dreamation, Dexcon, or Metatopia. Metatopia being a con specifically for game developers to find interested players to given an honest feedback on their in-progress board or role playing game (Dexcon and Dreamation are for more established games, but I have seen a handful of games that showed up to demo a WIP).
