Ok, I have the rules I need (thanks Madda Gaska!). I just need to know the MCPC rating of the deck, and the desired ratings of the Masking and Evasions stats.

Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to let you all know I’ll be out of town from Monday, Aug 9- Saturday, Aug 14. At this point, I do not know if Tisoz can take over for me, especially because he doesn't know all your storylines (yes, I have stories for all of you). I’ll be certain to get back online and into the game as soon as possible when I return. If anyone has any input on this topic, please feel free to post it. Thanks, and sorry for any inconvenience.

Shadowland IC is up. Anyone cleared to post here is cleared for Shadowland (IC and OOC). I recommend you check it, since a lot of the action will continue there while I'm gone next week thanks to Ditaki, our resident Shadowland SysOp. So feel free to start playing around with that.

Hey, WinterRat -- what should I have Cheng be doing with the information she obtained from Harmony? Would you want an Etiquette (Matrix) roll to see whether she can take those clues and use them to track down the current location of Shadowland's Seattle node? Or would that be more along the lines of a Locate Access Node op?
For that matter, should I roll Etiquette (Matrix) just to see whether or not I managed to get any useful information on the topic?

Everyone- Assume your characters (if they are runners) know how to and have found Shadowland. Also, in case you did not notice the earlier announcement, I will be out of town from Mon, Aug 9-Sat, Aug 14. So Ditaki will be taking care of moving the It's a Small World game forward via Shadowland, so keep checking there. He will be starting it on Jan 1, so it'll be in line with World IC. Consider World IC temporarily 'paused' until I return.
Bearclaw, Paul, and Madda- Your side stories will be wrapped up by Friday, Aug 20 to allow your characters to participate in the runs, if you desire. Just letting you guys know.

If I planned it right, at about a post per day the set-up makes some filler until WinterRat1 gets back, and it should also get me into Shadowland and wind up just as the runs begin next week, hopefully without treading on anything or anyone else or on things still in limbo. This is my first time, trying something on-line like this, so let me know if anything is out of line. Because it's all technically backstory, I'm not yet doing rolls or anything like that, just etching out personalities. (Is it all honour system, each person rolling their own dice? or is there some other way of doing it?)
And that'll be all you guys are getting directly of my backstory, even if it is metaknowledge like everyone else's
I'll need some help though with public transit systems and locations -- that linked map isn't the greatest.

OK everyone, for those who have not noticed, I have returned. Hope you all had a good week, I did, but I'm absolutely exhausted, and I've got to get ready to return to school and get all my stuff together, so I'll be scrambling to catch up and get everything ready. Just a quick update. Also, I figure enough time has passed for a karma award.
Paul, Bearclaw, Madda, Shev, take 1 karma point each for participation over the last few weeks.
Kurukami and Sedna, take 1 point each for participation and another point (each) for quality and consistent posts, particularly over the last week while I was gone.

question for the GMs: Are we using the cash for Karma optional rule in the World IC game thread??
My character was planning on begining a 28 day magic circulation to create orichalcum units as a graduation project for my magic teacher/mentor and donate the units to the teacher for karma and to pay training costs.
Let me know if this is viable or not.
If so I was thinking of posting in one week game intervals since my character will not be able to anything else during this process; unless something happens to interrupt the process.
This will advance the timeline by 28 days ahead of anyone else, so I am not sure if this will be a major problem or not.
Let me know what you think about this.

Aug 18 2004, 07:13 PM
OK now I'm pissed. Stupid comp lost my nice big update for you all. Summary version of original post is as follows.
1. Massive update tonight, will address all your character's individual storylines, and the Salvation sub-game setup.
2. In the next few weeks some of you may be switched to Tisoz to better balance the players out.
3. Great job posting everyone, campaign seems to be going quite well. Hopefully we'll be able to continue the trend.
WinterRat1
Aug 19 2004, 06:56 AM
OK, anyone who was NOT contacted about the job but actually was interested, just let me know.
Sentinel- Yes we do have cash for karma, but it's a variable rate, 2D6 K nuyen per point of karma and vice versa, and if the roll is higher than what you've got (e.g., it costs you 8000 nuyen but you only have 5000) you go in the hole (basically, you overextended yourself somehow or didn't manage your money quite right) to someone. Usually someone bad, but maybe not, depending on how you RP it. Also, it is viable, but I'm not sure how long it will take us to get through 28 days of game time, so you may be a little disjunct with the rest of the players for quite a while. But it is uncertain, at best. Still, if that's what you want, we're willing to work with you.
Everyone- The game will be bumped to 2300 January 4th, 2063 as of Tuesday, Aug 24, corresponding with the start date of the sub-game Salvation. My apologies for the delay, things were more hectic than I had originally anticipated, and posting a bit slower. I want to try to tie up the individual storylines if possible prior to that, but I am perfectly ok if they aren't tied up. Sometimes biz and personal get interwined. Actually, they usually do. So for all who are not involved in a storyline, feel free to get involved with or start one.
Additionally, I have a few projects I'd like some player assistance with, so I don't have to spend precious time on them. They'd be very helpful to me and Tisoz, as well as possibly your fellow players. If you have the time, inclination, and desire to earn some bonus karma by way of payment, post your interest and I'll get back to you either via PM or post, depending on the amount of interest.

Aug 19 2004, 02:22 PM
That's fine Winterrat1. My character would finish this "project" to help pay off his tuition debts to Sara and generate some extra Karma.
This is not to say that he can't interrupt this 28 day process for a couple of hours with good reason, so if anyone needs some last minute magic support he could do it.
As for helping you with projects I seem to have some extra time right now, so if you need some help let me know and I will do what I can. You should still have my email address.

General post comment: standard outgoing nuyen such as her transit pass I consider buried under Lifestyle. Any incoming nuyen I happen to mention in-post (such as the 500

However, any incoming nuyen you happen to mention, unless you tell me otherwise, I'll consider bonus

What kind of extra projects are you talking about? I've got some time on my hands, given my sporadic work situation, so I'd be willing to help out to some degree.
WinterRat1
Aug 20 2004, 06:58 PM
Since there seems to be a lot of interest in these 'extra projects' (I knew offering karma as an incentive would help out with the interest
) I will post their general nature here. Oh, and more than one person can work on them, in fact, for project 2 I'd really prefer a group of you worked on it.
Project 1- I would like someone to create a character database, and a location database. Basically, someone to keep track of every character, big and small, PC and NPC, that shows up in the IC thread. Not much info is needed, I will give specifics, but basically I want to know who they are, whose character they interacted with, when they showed up, and whatever info you can tell me about them. It will simply serve to help me remember who showed up in the game. It would be a huge help since obviously I create numerous NPCs on the fly, and having somewhere they're all listed would help me keep them all straight in my head. The location database is nearly the same thing.
Project 2- One thing I've always wanted was to create a realistic stock market for Shadowrun. It seems to be a very practical, useful, necessary, and fun tool that would greatly add realism and a sense of cause/effect relationship to the aftermath of some runs. Basically, the model I've come up with thus far is something like this. Each corp has a rating in different fields, which total up to an overall rating. See Corporate Download. However, it would be erroneous to simply use that final rating as a barometer of their stock performance, since the corp consists of MANY subisidiaries, AND not all areas of a corp are equally profitable. Not too mention that basically makes all the corps relatively equal among their peers (AAA, AA, A, etc).
Instead, what I would like to do is assign a relative weight, think some sort of 'profitability index' if you will, to each category. Clearly each area of business is NOT equally profitable, so they should not be treated as such. So let us say for example, that the area of Finance has a PI of 1.5, and Entertainment a PI of 1.2. Well then we can multiply the corp's rating in finance by 1.5, entertainment by 1.2, and so forth down the line, to get a price per area, and total them all up to get the corp's overall price in the parent corp, but also have a good idea of the price in the subsidiary corp. Of course, the problem is that I don't HAVE relative weights for each area, and it would take a lot of time and energy to analyze real world industries to figure out their relative weights. Basically, I'd like people to come up with relative weights for each area.
HOWEVER, that is just the best I've come up with so far. If someone has a better idea for creating a stock market that is easy to use, understandable, and most importantly, lends itself to the creation of the statistics of new corps reasonably quickly, that is what I am looking for. So whatever someone can come up with that works, I'm willing to take.
Let me know whatever thoughts, questions, comments, ideas, etc you all may have on these projects. Additionally, if there is something someone thinks of that would be very helpful to us as a community in this campaign, feel free to put forth that idea as well.
Final note, I'm currently out of town briefly until Sunday, so my posting will be sporadic until then, just fyi. Great job posting though, all of you, and the way you're keeping your own stories running without GM assistance is exactly what we had in mind. Good job!

I know that I am not a GM, but I would like to propose a third project, as it's been an idea of mine for some time. As a scientist I often use many book chapters as references but see little need to purchase an entire text book. For a while now I've made good quality scannings of book chapters and kept them as a digital archive of work to reference. I would like to extend this idea to archiving SR books, so that more people can benefit from them without the difficulty of tracking down out of print books.
A requirement of this project is good-quality scanning work (because I've seen people try this idea before and do terrible jobs). This does not take a lot of effort, just paitence and rudimentary knowledge of how to use a scanner and photoshop/GIMP. I would be willing to do a lot of the work myself, but I only own a fraction of SR source material.
I own . . .
-SR3
-MITS
-Threats 2
- Target: AL
I was hoping that some of you would be able to make archives of your own sourcebooks ( to help fill in the gaps) and then I would've know problems posting them on the web for use by the dumpshock community. I posted this idea here first because I like the game we're building here and I'll probaly make a request to the general forums in the future. Let me know your thoughts.

I'd be glad to contribute to #1 as well -- and since I use Excel as my primary tool for tables and Word for long, detailed writings on characters, the programs Sedna's using should mesh well with my own experimentations.
Puzzling out stock-market details is, however, a bit beyond my area of expertise.

As per my list of priorities that Cheng mentioned in the IC world thread...
QUOTE |
1. Identify who has controlling interest in Paradigm Shift, and who Mr. Fan might be. 2. Gather information on the Redmond region, and see what risks there might be in and around "Touristville". 3. Solidify my -- Kate Jones's -- next semester's schedule at the University of Washington. 4. Begin creating a program plan for a Camoflauge utility and an Evaluate utility. |
#3, of course, is just an in-character thing I can take care of myself. However, I suspect that for the others I'll need to make some rolls for.
1. Tracking down information on who owns/controls Paradigm Shift, and who "Mr. Fan" is. I'm guessing that this, like most data-searches, should be a Etiquette (Matrix) test.
My roll comes up as: 10, 5, 5, 3.
2. Information about the Redmond Barrens in general and Touristville in particular, the environs and potential hazards or risks. (I'm guessing this one will be easier, since much of the data would be publicly available.)
Another Etiquette (Matrix) roll comes up as: 8, 5, 4, 1.
4. Creating a program plan for a Camo utility. I'm aiming to be modest at first, and wish to create one for Camo at rating 4. (I still haven't found my Matrix book, so I'm going off what I vaguely remember and what Cybercat's cyberdeck generator says are the right numbers. Correct me if I'm mistaken.)
The base TN to create a program plan is 4. The base time to create the plan is 3 hours times the rating of the program, divided by the number of successes I get on the design roll. Cheng's Operational Utility Design Skill is 2, plus 1 die for her mnemonic enhancer-3, plus 1 die from the task pool granted by her cerebral booster-2.
I roll my 4 dice and get: 5, 3, 2, 1.
Only 1 success, so it'll take her the full 12 hours to pound out a workable plan. However, that success drops my TN to actually create the program by 1, making my TN 3 with my Computer of 6. Again, her task pool boosts that by a die, so I'm rolling 7 dice against the TN.
I roll and get: 5, 5, 4, 4, 3, 3, 2.
6 successes against the base programming time of 48 days means that the programming for the Camo: 4 will be complete in eight 8-hour programming days -- 64 hours.
After however long the data search takes, I'm going to say that Cheng puts four hours into the program plan (working until, say, 4:30 am), grab three and a half hours of sleep, and get up at 8. Then, most likely, she'll do her morning exercise regimen, grab some breakfast, and jump back into planning at, say, 9-ish. I'll go into that within my next IC post, but barring unforeseen interruptions she should be done with the planning stage by 1700 on January 3, leaving the evening and night free.
The day of January 4, well before the meeting over in Touristville at 2300, she'll put 8 hours into the programming of the Camo utility. That should leave her with plenty of time to prep for the meeting.
WinterRat1
Aug 22 2004, 06:49 AM
Kurukami- were you planning on having the Camo utility by the meet? If not, I'll get working on it while the meet is playing out, when I have a little more time.
All- Just fyi, by and large Tisoz and I will only be posting when GM action is needed/planned. Using Sedna's posts as an example, she is doing a lot, but none of it requires our involvement. So feel free to advance your story in a similar manner. Basically, we will post when either the plot or the mechanics of the game are involved with your post. Otherwise, feel free to entertain us all while moving things forward in your life, if not necesarily your shadowrunning career. Everyone follow?
Projects- Sedna and Kurukami, would you two mind working together on the project 1?
Kurukami
Aug 22 2004, 04:36 PM
Nah, I'm figuring that the program
plan will be done by then, but she'll have just done the first steps (the first day of eight needed to code it) by the time of the meeting. I'm just putting things in motion.
And Sedna and I are already corresponding on just that.
Sedna
Aug 22 2004, 10:13 PM
Ditto Kurukami.
To the other point, I'll entertain you all you like
but I hesitate to go too far with NPC actions, especially as they might relate directly to the PC and to the wider world. As one example, today's posting will have the distinct possibility for violence, or (ideally and very much preferably from Hobbes' -- and really from everyone's -- pov) for diffusion of violence: but, well, accidents happen. I know how everyone involved would prefer it spun out, and I could just write that -- but being primarily a PC, I feel I'd be overstepping. It's an interactive RPG after all, not a story I'm authoring.
Could you give a guideline as to the degree of flexibility -- and limits -- you'd like us to use in describing NPC actions?

Since Virgil has lived in the barrens his entire life and spends most of his time working at an outreach center that sends dontaions and volunteers to many barrens shelters . . I believe that he might have some passing knowlede of the "Open Arms" soup kitchen and it's supervisor Siser Perkins. Before he puts the word out to some other contacts I thought I could make an ettiqutte roll to see what Virgil can recall from his own dealings.
1. Reputation of the Open Arms soup kitchen. Does St. Margret Mary outreach send any help their way?
(ettiquette) 9, 1, 4, 2
2. What about this Sister Perkins lady? Where is she from? Does she seem a legimate down-in-the-trenches outreach worker? Has Virgil ever met her?

This post goes along with the post to IC that I just made.
1. Asking Father O'Grady about Sister Perkins and the Open Arms soup kitchen.

2. Virgil is searching the rectory library for information pretaining to historical or modern individual who have displayed similar signs to those shown in Julia. Seeing tears of blood and latin prayers just seems too much like a mark of the saints for this not to be worth the effort. I do not know what skill applies to this the most since it is simple library work. Below I present the rolls of an intelligence test and a magic backround test.

OK, this is going to be a bit difficult to answer. As a general guideline, if the plot of the world is affected by the actions of the NPCs, or if any sorts of mechanics are necessary, then you should allow the GMs to post. So I suppose it depends on what your intentions are. Consider the following three scenarios springing from Sedna’s most recent post.
In scenario 1, if this is simply an incident that illustrates the dangers of the city, then regardless of how it ends, in violence or otherwise, it’s perfectly fine to end it how you like.
In scenario 2, if she had intentions of it being a prelude to a mob war or something, then that is not appropriate, because the plot is affected.
In scenario 3, if she plans on getting directly involved, then the mechanics of the game are affected, and that is not appropriate.
Note that if you want to place yourself in a situation where mechanics may occur, that is ok, depending on how you do it. In general though, try to stay away from situations where this may occur in your posts, unless you clear it with your World GM first.
Additionally, if a GM introduces a character or situation to you, assume that plot and/or mechanics are involved, and only write your character’s response.
If you introduce a character or situation, you may run it as you choose, but be aware a GM may step in at any moment, and you may find yourself in a situation or with ramifications that you did not plan on. If it is necessary, we will collaborate to edit your original post to accurately reflect events, but ideally no one will proceed that far ahead of themselves. Consider this to be the case in Sedna’s most recent post.
And the golden rule: If you aren’t sure, ask. We’re more than happy to collaborate with you to create stories you’re interested in seeing played out. Almost anything you come up with is a possibility for being used, so don’t be afraid to be creative. So feel free to ask us about any situations you have in mind. I will add that player creativity is what creates stories and fleshes out the world, so don’t stifle yourselves because you’re worried about crossing any lines.
In general, if we don’t say anything, you’re doing fine not involving the plot or mechanics, and proceed apace. At whatever point we feel you’ve crossed the line, we’ll just discuss it with you, collaborate where appropriate, and make whatever changes necessary to get things back on track. How is that for clarification?
Sedna
Aug 23 2004, 01:55 PM
Perfect, exactly what was needed. Thank you.
It can be difficult to describe continued PC actions without touching significantly upon NPC choices, both existing within a broader series of events that do touch upon the location and the individual. In fact, I didn't see how I could do it. This represents a good compromise.
The three scenarios you described were those I had seen, with the primary intent here to illustrate the nature of the place and difficulty of keeping reasonably good relations with widely disparate and -- non-harmonious -- elements of society ... but I wasn't sure if you wanted it even as illustrative. So the next post will jump a bit in elapsed time, this particular trigger point has been neutralised for now, and you can consider the overall situation diffused or not as suits your purpose.
Consider that the absolute widest afield I will ever go then, and most times not even that far: strict canon as it could apply to a specific place (
New Seattle 98), sometimes with the possibility (at your discretion) that the situation might expand -- but always with the definite intent and hope that it does not -- and with the constant understanding that you might wish to "make something of it" at any given point

Aug 24 2004, 07:47 AM
Everyone- Sorry posts have been a little slow. In addition to trying to catch up after a nearly two week hiatus and planning the run, Tisoz and I have been working on transferring some characters to him. As you may have noticed the players under his domain have not posted in World IC. My character, Dragon, has been tied up in a nearly dead run. The rest of the players have posted nothing in World IC and have shown us no interest in posting in World IC. As such, we’re removing them from the list and transferring some of my players to Tisoz.
In case you're wondering, Bandit, Kurukami, Shev, and Sentinel are being transferred. Those four plus me give Tisoz 5 players. I will retain Bearclaw, Paul, Madda, and Sedna.
In regard to sub-game 3, Salvation, I count 5 of you (Shev, Kurukami, Paul, Bearclaw, and Sedna) who have shown an interest and been invited. That’s a little short-handed, and you have ZERO muscle. If any of you know anyone else who’d be interested in getting involved in this campaign world, feel free to invite them. If they can get something to me relatively quickly, I’ll work them in. Otherwise, I’ll try to scale it a bit to who we’ve got.
Finally, I will be bumping the World IC time to the time of the meet at about 1am, Wednesday, Aug. 25 Eastern Time. At that point in time I will post the IC and OOC threads for Salvation and the opening post. If any of you have anything you want your characters to do between whatever time you’re currently at and then (2300 Jan 4 2063), please post a summarized, story like version of what they’ve been up to. Assume it’s been a relatively quiet few days for all of you, and you basically did what you’ve been doing. The only exception to this quietness might be Bearclaw; the rest of you have generally been pursuing things that don’t really need GM intervention.
For those who are wondering how it works, basically, post your characters showing up exactly as you would (time stamp and all) except in the Salvation thread. From that point on, anything related to Salvation directly or indirectly will take place in the Salvation IC and OOC threads. Anything not related to Salvation will still be posted and handled via the Shadowland or World threads. That about covers it I think, again, sorry for the slowness, once we get this transfer handled things will pick back up and return to their usual smoothness.

As for muscle in the Salvation game... I have a character that's running in another online thread that might fit. He's a troll and a Seoulpa enforcer, and if what you've indicated about the mission being a breakout from a Japanese internment camp in CFS is accurate, he'd probably be up for it. Drop me a PM if you'd be interested in my bringing him in -- I've already got all the background files and whatnot prepared, so there'd be no lag-time.

I'll have to check against MitS for the # of day-hour details and it's your judgement call as to cross-compatibility, but if you'll allow those posts as access, she's starting the attempt to learn and/or adapt this specific formula -- something that will most likely interweave with the run. (The watcher ritual, on the other hand, will fall flat again.)

Aug 24 2004, 11:31 PM
There are a couple of things Cheng would like to get her hands on prior to the meet at Paradigm Shift.
1. A complete blueprint of the club. This kind of thing needs to get filed at the County Records office before a place goes into business, I'd expect, so there should definitely be a record of it somewhere. Basically, she wants something that'll tell her where various staircases, exits, and corridors go, should things by any chance go sour. She wants to know the place before she ever steps inside.
2. A map chip of the surrounding environs, at least as much as one can get such a thing in the chaotic Zero Zone that is the Redmond Barrens. Something that includes streets, alleys, and the nearest highway on-ramp if a quick getaway is needed.
Yeah, I know, getting paranoid before the run's even begun, but... well, Cheng's methodical that way.
Do you want me to actually make some Etiquette rolls to track these things down, or will they be available with a bit of decking into the proper hosts?

1. You deck and find the original blueprints from when the building was constructed, and 10 more sets of blueprints for the various remodels. One of them looks like a scan of a napkin and the lines indicating the walls are not even straight.
2. You can download a street map from several public sites.

Salvation is up. I set it an hour early so you guys have a chance to do stuff beforehand, if you want.
Remember, if you wanted your characters to do/finish anything before 2200 Jan 4, just post what you’ve been up to in a story format, otherwise we will assume that nothing of note has happened and that everything is as it stood when we left. Although a short summary, at the least, of what you’ve all been up to is highly recommended, especially for those of you who were involved with stuff these past four days (which is nearly all of you).
Finally, the transfer of players has been finalized, the lists will reflect the modified player assignments.

Instead she'd gone hunting through public databases and Shadowland for "Sister Perkins" and the "Open Arms Soup Kitchen" and "CorpDeVo". |
In finishing up this section of the LitS IC:

Spirit lore (per the possession reference): 4,3,1

I had to reregister my login name. Ninj was my old login. Sentinel is the new.
Sorry for the confusion.

Summoning the city spirit outside of Tommy Chong's . . .
6 dice allocated from conjuring skill. No totem modifiers. Force 4 city spirit.
4, 1, 8, 4, 1, 9: 4 successes which means 4 services.
Use one service to have Dragon concealed on the steet adding +4 to the TN of any perception tests to detect him.
Drain: six dice from charisma against 4M (stun) drain
1, 3, 4, 2, 4, 8
4 successed means drain is staged completely down.
Spirits last task as I leave the city domian is to use it's fear power on anyone entering the alleyway adjacent to my shop.

Tisoz will handle the Julia situation. He's getting caught up to speed right now, so just have a bit of patience. He'll be on it shortly. Just wanted to let you all know we're not just ignoring it, we'll get on it soon. Thanks for your patience!
