Pragma does (magical materials/spells?), I believe, DR might (surgery?). In any case, as long as Cerberus is done with Johnson, you can probably feel free to post ahead. The things they might be asking for/about probably won't interrupt anything you're doing.

Dec 10 2007, 01:21 PM
Okay - you guys are obviously free to continue to RP in the room as much as you like.
Once Johnson does leave, I will be able to do some things that BH and I are working on, and it shouldn't hold other people back since he'll be separated, so if he gets a bit ahead or behind the team timeline it should be okay.
Once he's gone, again, RP at will, but in the interest of moving things forward, the events I am aware of are
first - Fort wards for four hours. By the time he is done, everyone but Angel is declared as crashing for at least 24 hours.
That means that once the RP chatting is stopped and some ICs that Fort puts up the ward, Konsaki should be free to do the stuff he's been planning.
After that, as far as the "room group" is concerned, people should be able to cash in on any heal rolls they've already made or make any they have coming to them, and then we should be able to think about wrapping up the 36 hours and making sure everyone is ready to move forward.

(5P, -1 AP, SA, 0 RC, 15/15(clip) Smartlinked. (6P -2AP after XX ammo)
I forget how many frags I threw but does anyone else want to take any or all of the grenades? Cerberus has TW so he can definately use them.
-Eleven (cylindrical) grenades - 1 Frag, 3 HE, 3 smoke, 1 thermal smoke, 1 flash bang
Did Angel ever grab this gun??
-Yamaha Pulsar

Ok here are my medicine and healing rolls. I spent 1 hour for the stun damage, and 24 for the physical. I had 1P and 5S before the rolls...
Hmmmm I failed to heal my stun damage in one go so is that ok to spend another hour resting?? I would just change my IC post so that Cerberus wakes up at 6 AM instead of 5. See what happens when you roll after!! hehehe.
Medicine= Logic 4+medicine 2 + medkit 6 - 2 indoors? = 10 dice
3, 6, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 4, 6, 4, 1, 2 = 3 hits
Stun Healing= 11 Dice + medicine hits 3 = 14 dice
3, 2, 5, 5, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6, 1, 2 = 3 hits
5S -> 2S
Stun Healing= 11 Dice
3, 6, 3, 5, 4, 6, 6, 1, 3, 6, 3 = 5 hits
2S -> 0S
Physical Healing = 12 dice
2, 3, 5, 4, 6, 6, 3, 3, 3, 1, 5, 4 = 4 hits
1P -> 0P.
@Everyone Johnson left, Angel left. Who needs a van??? Does Fortunato have a vehichle?? If I cant get my bike back I might want it lol. Have to strip that wussy norm interior out and make it Rocky and Cerb friendly.
Anyone wants dibs on the assault rifle?? Cerberus has firearms 3 so he isnt that skilled at using it.

@Abbandon
Great post. Looks like you are covered for the 36 hours. No problem with jiggering the sleep hours so you get rid of that stun.
One thing I would ask you to do is insert whatever actual info Angel sent you - otherwise it disappears into the black hole of PMs without adding to our narrative.
Also, could you remind me where the Predator with the EX comes from...I know the one you've been carrying around that you took from Rosso has APDS, and if I recall correctly you've been keeping careful track of those precious rounds. But the Predator IV with EX slips my mind.
Not doubting your memory, doubting my own.
Looks like you've already marked off two frag grenades from the list. Sounds vaguely correct - actually, without going back I can't recall if you tossed one or two. If you feel like it you can go back and confirm, otherwise marking off the two is a safe bet.
@Everyone - I would indeed like to know if anyone takes any of those weapons...anything not claimed I will assume goes to Cerberus.
At this point, the only person who should be waiting on anything specific from me is BlackHat, and I will try not to let him wait too long.

I grabbed a gun off the guy me and Kyle rushed who had capped the security guy at the clinic, Rosso, and I think Buernhouse. I will go back and check its fuzzy.

Haha sorry about that Konsaki I know you are male but i mixed you up with your character.
@Adamu, After a lot of wasted time I have found the answer sort of....
I got one gun off the Indian Elf(the apds i guess), and another one off the guy the indian Elf shot.
You said Birnhauser had the predator 4 w/ ex ammo
Russo had the stun gun.
That was around page 28-29 OOC if you have it set up to view 50 threads at a time.
The gun that came off the indian elf's victom I left at the clinic, I offered Rocky one(dont remember if it was apds or ex), I took the other and the stun gun.

Here is a snippit from the edited IC post to include the info Angel passes along in case you dont want to try and find it:
[ Spoiler ]
On his way to the bathroom after waking up he looked around the room and noticed that Angel was missing. Checking his comm revealed an icon, seeing as they were in a firefight or anything he opened his eyes up to the matrix and fed the message into his eyes. "I did a search to find any info out there on your stuff. Here is a file containing what I found, plus another list of nodes that might contain more reliable info. I can get in, but not for IOU's. You have my contact info in the message I left the team. Good luck.". Clicking on the icon of which he had never seen before on his commlink opened up a file, "Search on "Bob Michaels", his apartment, his accounts, his bike:
Three guys were found gunned down in Micheals' apartment, the most grisly of many signs that a major gun battle had taken place there. The bodies had been stripped of valuables, and all were IDed as known mafia enforcers associated with the Finnegan Family.
Michaels is a suspect. His bike has been identified and impounded.". Pounding the close button on the file, the icon on his commlink disappeared. Fuck fuck fuck!! How the hell am I going to get my bike out of Lone Star's stupid impound lot!! What a god damn shitty way to start my day out. It isnt enough that I've lost two months rent and most of my earthly posessions but now my bike on top of everything else! God damn it, I had that bike ever since I started working at Doc Wagon. That fat italian slob piece of shit!
Cerberus's rage was boiling over and it took everything in him to stay in control and not start smashing the shit out of the room they were all staying in. He angrily walked to the bathroom. After taking his morning dump and washing his hands it was time to get some things done. His body felt better than ever and everything looked to be healing nicely. He had freaking slept for 25 hours.
First was the warm up and he had alot of energy to burn.

Oh I wanted to ask if Angel leaving would affect our ability to use @team ?? When would our little team network break apart??
BlackHat
Dec 12 2007, 04:29 PM
Depends on the rating of people's commlinks, I think.
Your commlink can maintain connections to, what, twice its system worth of devices So, besides all your periphreals (cyberware, contacts, VR gloves, etc), that puts a limit on the number of teammates you can be in constant connection with.
However, with only one channel available, you could either send individual messages to everyone on some list (which would take a lot longer) or route your request to someone else's good commlink which could then send to everyone on the network - which is probably how peopel with Metalinks would do something like this, and probably why the team network would pop when the "server" wanders out of range.
Chances are, between the four of you left in the room, someone has a commlink that is running a rating 3 OS, which is really all it would take to set up a new network that could let the lower-end commlinks participate, with two connections left open for that user's devices.
The only real drawback to doing things that way instead of having a whole team of high rating commlinks who can all send messages to everyone on the team is that if a hacker took control of the server commlink, he has control of all the messages going to anyone. Doing things point-to-point would be safer, but would require people to upgrade.

It might not be a bad idea, at somepoint for us to, as a team, take inventory of what we have (commlink-wise, but also cyber-wise, weapon-wise, etc) and identify areas we need to reinforce/upgrade.
BlackHat
Dec 12 2007, 04:39 PM
For example, glancing at your character sheet. With your rating 1 System, I believe that means you can only maintain two active connections.(COuld be wrong on that rule though, someone feel free to correct me)
One of them should probably be some sort of combined input/output device (trodes) and the other could be any one thing you want to connect to (nearby matrix node, whoever's commlink you're calling, higher-rating teammate's commlink, etc).
If you needed to, say, connect to your cyberware to run diagnostics, or wanted to connect to your gloves to manipulate some object physically in AR, you would have to disconenct from the team's network (although, I think it is assumed that you are always conencted to the Matrix - but to do anything through it, like send a message to a friend, you first have to open a connection to the recipient, which would require you disconnecting your gloves).
That's what you get for trying to use an MP3 player as a PDA.
DireRadiant
Dec 12 2007, 05:04 PM
Sledge is running Response 4, and the Love Machine is Response 5, so for the secure network there shouldn't be a problem. Just slows things down and shouldn't have any impact out of combat time.
Sledge typically has her Agent handle the channel switching if it's needed, which it shouldn't be much.
For non secure network traffic, any nodes in range will do, and non secure is fine as long as you can run decrypt programs.

As far as fake SIN's descriptions for cerberus....
The R1 should be able to get an apartment and shop online. The R2 should make cerberus sound like somebody that is allowed to have cyber and firearms and stuff. Dont care about names or occupation really but the occupation should be something a troll would be hired for.

Are liscenses bought for individual pieces of equipment (cyber-pistol, wired-reflexes, hot-sim capable sim-module, this particular pistol, etc) or for categories of items (cyberware, firearms, etc)?
I don't own any guns in real life, but I think you have to get a seperate liscense for each gun you want to buy, and that it is tied to the gun's registration (you know, in case that gun ever murders someone, and they want to know who's supposed to be keeping track of it). But, like, for driving, I just need a generic driving liscense, and I am liscensed to drive any car. Likewise, a medical liscense might let me legally possess a whole slew of controlled substances that I don't have to get liscensed for, individually.

For SR4 purposes, any gear that has a "R" on availability should be considered as possibly needing a license. "F" can be licensed too, but is likely to be the kind of gear that really isn't allowed to the public under any circumstances.

Dec 13 2007, 03:49 AM
Well I know when I was making my character Adamu gave me/ok'ed general purpose Licenses like "guns" and "ammo" but that may have been just to get the ball rolling.
Hmmmmm. Pg 323.
Each type of item or activity requires a seperate license
I guess it depends on how you interpret "type".
A pistol is a type of gun/A predator is a type of pistol
Bullets are a type of ammo/ APDS is a type of bullet
Bodyware is a type of cyber/ Wired Reflexes are a type of bodyware
I think you should just have to buy a Single Fake license that contains a document for everything immaginable. Or it would be something that you customize. For example.
Cerberus goes to Nym and asks for pistols, longarms, heavy weapons, grenades, apds, gel, regular, bodyware, headware, driving, whatever else he needs and Nym calls him back in a couple of days and has a single Fake License document that includes everything he told nim to.
OOC-wise Cerberus just baught an R3 Fake License package from Nym for 300$.

Check p. 303 Legality. Here's an example.
"For example, you are allowed
to purchase and own a gun when you have
a fi rearms license for it. To
carry a gun with you, you
may need a more specifi c
concealed carry permit."
and
"A forbidden item may
never be legally purchased or
owned, let alone transported
or used, by a private person.
Don’t get caught."
and the sentence prior to the one already cited on p 323
": For those who don’t want to go through
the standard legal channels, a fake license can be obtained
for all kinds of restricted items (see Legality, p. 303) or activities
(hunting, concealed carry, spellcasting, etc.)—as appropriate
to the jurisdiction—can be obtained through the
black market."
I tend to think there's isn't a single blanket license, but one per item, though I think a handgun permit would tend to be for that class of weapon.
But, it's up to Adamu.
Abbandon
Dec 13 2007, 08:24 AM
I agree there is not a single purpose fake license. But I think there should be.
I dont know I just dont like or understand all the SIN and license stuff. If a shadowrunner ever gets caught doing something they are screwed, it wont matter if they have fake licenses in fact it will probably add more charges onto them.
When would we get caught with a gun or ammo or cyber while not commiting a crime?
I guess I will just have to go over my guy pretty thoroughly and find all the things I need licenses for.
This makes me think we should all have a better and more meaningful cover story for our fake SIN's and a good lawyer on retainer instead of just being Bob Michaels plumber extraordinaire with 50 different firearm licenses, grenades, and concealed weapons permits lol.
Hmmm this is making me think I have things backwards. The perfect set up for character's SINs are:
Your Highest rating SIN = your safe non runner SIN. You also buy all the Licenses and attach it to this SIN. This allows you to run around town carrying your gear and looking like your average citizen.
Then you have a R1 SIN or better if you can afford it as your disposable. This is the one you use while running. You have a drivers permit for it and thats about it. Once the run is over you chuck it. You do not load it up with all those licenses because if you get caught your screwed anyways. You just need it to get to the target location, do the job, and get out.
I was going to use my R1 for my safety net and my best stuff for my running but thats stupid. Every run im going to be throwing away my best SIN and all those stupid licenses over and over again.
Blackhat I think you better be real general in terms of what you ask Nym for lol. Like just the fact you need some sins, some licenses, and how much your willing to spend.

Okay - the trick with RPGs is that you want to stick as close to RAW as possible, so the players have a working idea what they can get away with, but you've got to always remind everyone that common sense trumps all - that's why you are playing SR4 (human gamemaster) instead of Final Fantasy (computer gamemaster).
When adjudicating situations I always try to give the players the benefit of the doubt if they are relying on RAW, and when I make big deviations from RAW, I let them know beforehand if it is going to hurt them. But you have to know that all actions have consequences, and when the RAW is used in ways that fly too much in the face of reality (unfortunately, that must necessarily be MY perception of reality), then logic and common sense have to take over.
First, some rulings on the IDs and licenses:
Yeah, if you want to be fully covered, you may need a lot of licenses. They are a relatively cost-efficient way for society to prevent any thug on the street from wreaking mayhem on the streets to the degree that it will cause excessive interference with productivity. And they help the GM keep a rein on injudicious use of firepower.
So as a general rule, every Restricted item/ware needs a license. Spellcasting needs a license too, and magical capability is legally required to be noted and registered on any SIN.
Note that when I say "needs" I mean, according to game world law enforcement, not according to ME. Not my problem.
As Abbandon pointed out, though - even if he licenses everything, if the cops catch him with the IWK and the rifle and all the grenades, etc. they WILL be suspicious and want to know what the hell he's doing, regardless.
Remember that civil rights in the 6th world have taken a big step back from the USA today, even for SINners. And of course an even bigger step back if you enter an extraterritorial jurisdiction.
Also, Abbandon, a word to the wise - check out the rules on fake IDs and licenses - you put your rating in an opposed test against the verification system...those R1 and R2 IDs are good for online shopping or the Stuffer Shack, and actually they are only any good there because no one gives a crap. Any cop stops you and you are dinged, and few reputable establishments will take cred off an ID like that unless they roll really badly.
Figure any decent commercial establishment will be using at least an R3 verifier...at least. Same for any Lone Star cop or drone - and they can verify at a much higher rating if they just patch it through to their HQ.
Does this all seem oppressive? Of course. It is oppressive. That's Shadowrun. Certain characters like Smith that are set up certain ways may have a relatively easier time leading a life as a "citizen", but as a general rule, runners are marginalized from society - otherwise they'd sell their skills legitimately for more than they can make running.
Do you want guarantees that you will never get stopped by the cops? Or that if you do you will be legally airtight? There can be no more guarantees of that than there can be of succeeding on a run or surviving a firefight.
As players, in a game of skill, which SR is, you can study the rules, the fluff material, and yes, consult with the GM (and you know I am always happy to spend time putting us all on the same page "vision of reality"-wise), to determine how best to stack the odds in your favor.
In this arena, carefully choosing when to carry what, what parts of town to go to and when, and what licenses to carry, etc. are outstanding things to do. And in doing so, you will have to balance cost-effectiveness.
Since I can see that it is a bookkeeping pain in the ass, and that it is really expensive, I will make some rules concessions - but remember, nothing is a guarantee. All you can ever do is try to stack the odds in your favor as much as possible, just like any other aspect of the game.
Assume that purchase of a concealed carry permit includes one handgun (one such double-permit per fake SIN).
Assume that any fake SIN automatically includes a drivers license.
Assume any fake SIN can include the mandatory Awakened registration if you want it to. This does not include a spellcasting license.
Anyone that has already bought these things separately can take a free license of same rating as replacement - let me know.
And as a holy grail of licenses, it is theoretically possible to get a "Security license."
This gives you carte blanche for Restricted weapons and cyber up to 2X the license's rating. That's not number of items, which is unlimited. What I meant to say was Restricted items with Availability ratings up to 2X the license rating.
Such a license has an Availability of +4 and a cost multiplier of 3X.
And if you get caught with one, naturally the penalties can be very steep.
Even a security license cannot let you carry Forbidden items. That needs a special permit from a AAA or a national government, usually military. It is theoretically possible for a PC to get one, but the availability and cost are beyond the scope of simple rules calculations.
Other "activity" licenses, like hunting, locksmith, etc may be easier to get and allow a wide range of illegal items. They will be expensive to fake, but not as bad as security licenses. Talk to me if you have a request.
Hope this helps. Yes, it's a huge pain. But it keeps shadowrunners the rare exception in society, instead of this being the freaking City of Greyhawk where every dude on the street is a fifth level paladin.

Ok here are the details on Rocky's request in game terms, I'll be adding it to the IC shortly.
Looks like I may be late as I didn't have Rocky knowing his ID was burned till Friday morning. Guess thats what happens when you sleep for 24 hours. Hope this doesn't make things to hard.
SIN (include Drivers License/Awakened) R4 = 4000
Conceal Carry / Gun License - Super Warhawk R4 = 400
Ammo Liscense (EX-Explosive) Liscese R4 = 400
Total 4800
Thanks

Assume that purchase of a concealed carry permit includes one handgun (one such double-permit per fake SIN).
...
Anyone that has already bought these things separately can take a free license of same rating as replacement - let me know. |
Reviewing my charcter-sheet, when setting up his "Aaron Smith" ID, he did get a concealed carry permit, but only got one license for "slivergun" (of which, he owns two). So, those will cancel-out, and I think he is, otherwise, fine.
Does the concealed carry permit cover all weapons the person is licensed for, or just the specific one that is included with it? Typically, Smith carries three concealed weapons (four if you consider a Pain-Inducer in a briefcase "concealed" which I think most cops probably would - five, if its illegal to conceal a perfectly legal taser). Not a big deal either way, but I might have to spend some of what's left of my starting cash on some extra permits while I'm already doing buisness with this guy.
Also, to everyone else, as far as the ratings go, since both sides are rolling (and I don't think anything besides the devices rating is rolled), the rating differences arn't as big of a factor as you would think. For the most parts, R3-R4 liscences can be counted on to get 1 hit. Same goes with R3 or R4 verification systems.
If the NPCs are using R5 or R6 systems (1-2 hits standard), my money would not be on the newbie shadowrunner (max rating 4). R1 and R2 systems on either side are hardly worth using. They would almost never work, and 17% of the time would glitch-out. I've usually treated it like there being 3 tiers of fake IDs. The first tier is really only going to work when its not worth the other person's time to check up on it. The second tier will hold up against stuff when it mostly doesn't matter, but if the other side takes security seriously, its a 50/50 crap-shoot. The third tier can be counted on to work most of the time against most things.
Still, since rolling is involved, the Star could be running their top-of-the-line verification techniques (rating 6) against a SIN whipped together overnight by a highschooler (rating 1) there is a (small) chance it will work just fine. Likewise, you could have the best fake ID known to man, and the zitty 15-year old behind the counter at the local Gas-n-Go might tell you the credit-card machine just told him to press the Panic Button .

So, take that for what its worth. Like adamu said, there arn't any garuntees, for either side.

I'll put it together and get it posted tonight - hopefully earlier rather than later, so it doesn't hold anyone up any more than it needs to.

Basic tactic will be to try to negotiate for a lower-price, ideally by highlighting the fact that I'm bringing him in a lot of business, and can potentially find more. He's delt with me before, and doesn't
have to deal with these untrustworthy third-party clients at all, if he doesn't want to, as well as the usual nuances of convincing a merchant to drop the price.
Secondly, reguardless of his interest in any of the above, I want to make sure I drop the idea (and plant the seed) of bringing one another business. Even if he's not interested, Smith is, and if this guy knows any other Shadowrunners or people in need of Shadowrunners, I'd like to make a good enough first impression that he might consider calling.
Avalanche of dice-rolls:
[ Spoiler ]
Requested Willpower (4) + Charisma (6) = 10 dice
#D=10 : 3463536164 n1=1 n6=3 nHit=4
Might as well make some sort of Intuition(4) + Psychology(1) = 5 dice check to see if I think this guys is interested in me seeming like a real person because he actually LIKES meeting new people because they help him flesh out his fake IDs. Even if that is the case, he seems cautious about it. Maybe I could even spin things that I could help him meet MORE people, after making sure they're cool.
#D=5 : 41555 n1=1 n6=0 nHit=3
Negotiation roll to haggle. This is the big one here, so I'm willing to use edge since we're talking about around $9,200 (bringing me to 7 remaining uses)
Charisma(6) + Negotiation(5) + Edge (8) = 19 dice
#D=19 : 3566146165635411663 n1=4 n6=7 nHit=10
#D=7 : 1261432 n1=2 n6=1 nHit=1
Total of 11 hits - counting on him countering some of those, but if I can save the team any money, that's pretty much my job. Edge well-spent.
I'm not sure if it would be Con, Leadership, or Etiquette to convince him that we'd make a good team, but it doesn't matter, because my dice-pool is 11, reguardless. Hell, I might as well use all three. Con for convincing, Leadership for getting him to follow, and etiquette for phrasing the pitch the right way:
Con #D=11 : 42341646551 n1=2 n6=2 nHit=4
Leadership #D=11 : 15254212151 n1=4 n6=0 nHit=3
Etiquette #D=11 : 23155441561 n1=3 n6=1 nHit=4
That should do it for now, I guess.

Oh yeah, for those interested. I did the twenty-questions thing with www.20q.com, and only gave it 19 questions (since Nym lost one) and even then, on question 19 it really did guess 'Kat', which I thought was pretty freaky.
