Korrie's 20 Questions
[ Spoiler ]
1. What is your heritage?
Korrie was born in France as part of a very small Pixie community, existing by necessity on the fringes of "regular" society. She was a precocious child and spent much of her younger years getting involved in the wrong crowd, during which she proved especially skillful at playing the "distraction". She quickly perfected the art of the crying lost child while her compatriots were running away with others belongings.
Around the age of 13, she found another avenue for her creative (yet antisocial) tendencies - the Matrix. She idolized the deckers of old in a way that others might reserve for simsense stars. She built her own commlink and soon was getting into (minor) trouble with authorities.
2. What would your parents say about you?
They were traditionalists - traditionalists from a past that really wasn't theirs. In the same way the elves quickly embraced their roles as "ancients" and all the other stereotypes associated with them, and in the same way there is a natural inclination for people to believe dwarves are engineers, so too did Korrie's parents believe that they (and she) were tricksters - like the faeries of old. For that reason, they were proud of her for her more "mischievous ways", when they found out about them.
They would not think kindly upon her leaving, a fact which they themselves do not currently know. To their minds, she went off on a life of trickery amongst the big people in Paris. To know that she was far across the ocean in Seattle would be heartbreaking and terrifying for them.
3. What historical events does your character remember?
The recent Pixie independence near France is the most notable fact in current history. However, She is also a devotee of history and has spent a great deal of time researching the emergence of the Technomancers, the AI, and the events revolving around the Crash and Crash 2.0
4. How did you get into shadow running, and why?
It borders on the cliche, but it was an accident - honest. She was exploring the Matrix - hacking it for bits of pay data she could flog on to the high bidder. Little things like what the next hit record would sound like before it was released, or what the game results would be from the US a fraction of a second before they were released at the betting agency. In a small hole of the matrix, protected by nearly no IC but a great deal of obscurity (things left in the open have nothing to hide, right?) she came across some files. To her the files were gibberish - or at the very least, boring. Genotypes, biomedical scans, and cybernetic blueprints. Certainly not interesting to her (perhaps the cybernetics a bit) but guaranteed to sell, she snagged them.
The French authorities were on to her the next day, finding her as she was having a coffee in one of the cafes. She was arrested and charged but the authorities could not find her commlink. She always kept precautions on where she stored it, rotating it frequently at the time when it wasn't in use - and when she only had the one! She was released, but found out that she was under surveillance. She knew that she had to run, and that whatever this information was, someone wanted it back.
She ran throughout the country until the country became too small. There was no one she would trust with the data she was carrying. She needed to leave fast, and some time creating fake identities was well-spent, as was the large amount of cash she diverted to pay for a less security conscious flight.
Before leaving though, to find a man from the Korrigan, she had to let herself do the one thing she was most afraid of - being arrested. Under a faked identity, she was arrested and used her short amount of time to find the names of Pixel and Argent, a pixie and an elf who had made it "out" and had gotten to Seattle.
5. What is your living space like?
Right now the apartment where she lives is relatively sparse. It is maintained as a middle class dwelling, but Korrie has to take great care to keep up the appearances of three people living there. On the file of Jane Todd (her primary alias), she lives there with her two parents - midlevel corporate citizens who revel in a bit of "shadow running chic". There is always the right amount of trash, the right comings and goings recorded on the door, amongst other tricks she employs through scripted events. Once inside though, the walls look almost institutional, at least to someone not looking through AR. In AR, the location gleams with chrome, neon, and glowing effects that would have looked futuristic 60 years ago. In AR, the place looks like a haven to her heroes who surround the place.
Her shop is in one room where she tinkers with her electronics and performs necessary repairs to her gear.
6. What are your beliefs / convictions and why do you hold them?
Korrie believes that she should use her talents to "take from the rich and give to the poor" especially if that poor is her. If it's fun, she'll do it and if it is boring (or worse - boring without a purpose) she quickly loses interest and gives up. Ideologically, she considers governments to be her enemy if for no other reason than there's only one across the world that considers her kind "people". She doesn't mind regular metahumans, seeing that most of them have the same problems as she does.
7. What do you think is your most annoying / worst trait?
She falls into obsessive patterns of behavior and has a difficult time shaking them. For example, if she does a particular thing at a particular time each day, then she falls into that grove regularly, even if others are not always on the same wavelength. It can't be described as obsessive compulsive, because if forced she can stop the behavior, but it can easily grate on people when she texts the same thing at the same time on a daily basis.
8. What megacorp do you like the most? And Least? Why?
Renraku is one of the ones she would trust and take jobs from, if only because she understands it the most. If it were still truly in existence, Fuchi would be one that she rather likes. She would strongly dislike any corporation that had any connection with anti-metahuman or anti-sapient actions.
9. How did you come to know your contacts?
In Seattle, Korrie has no contacts - only the names Pixel and Argent.
10. What do you do on a day off?
A day off? What might that be? Seriously, a day off would be spent shoring up her identities to make sure they were still solid, and then hanging out in one of the virtual clubs. Once there, she would begin flirting, drinking, and making deals to perhaps indulge in one of her vices - BTLs. BTLs are a particularly heady experience for her as they were designed for the metahuman body, and even a simple experience can leave her breathless with the intensity of it.
11. How did you come to learn your skills at your present proficiency?
A youth misspent by community standards and a drive for self-preservation, coupled with the fact that in the Matrix you could be whatever you wanted drove her to pursue her skills in hacking. Her skills in forgery came from a need to spoof a lifestyle to which she did not really have a hold. She is skilled with automatics only because she once knew a gunsmith who took a liking to her, calling her a "good luck charm". When he found out she was leaving France, he gave her her modified gun as a parting gift.
12. Are there any moral limits on what jobs you take or things you'll do?
She does not like wetwork and is distrustful of those who ask for it. She won't refuse it but it certainly feels uncomfortable. In the matrix, she has no qualms about the nature of the work, but she will only use Black attacks and neural damage as a last resort. She also will not do work that requires the "unique use of her type". For instance, she will not be engaged only as a "flyer". Should she need to to accomplish her task, she will fly but she wants to cut a life for herself as a hacker, not as a pixie.
13. How do you view magic?
It works, and it is a part of her, but she doesn't want to think about it too much. Her dread fear is "dying", because she does't want to disappear. She always performs maintenance on her biomonitor first, since she does not want to die and then have her body vanish, when she could perhaps be saved by some heroic intervention. She likes the ability to look beyond into astral, but for her it's just kind of "cool" rather than particularly useful.
14. How do you feel about augmentation/implantation?
The big shame of her existence is that she doesn't truly "feel" like a hacker yet, since she doesn't have a data jack. All of her heroes did, but she's been told on numerous occasions that she cannot have one - no doctor can implant it. Besides, there's some "poor girl" laying in NAN care in the US who had a datajack and "look what happened to her". She would love to have a datajack, even knowing the consequences of losing her "magic sight". In fact, her consistent "hobby level" analysis of the data she's carrying seems to suggest that in there is hope for her being implanted. The data looks (to an untrained eye) as possibly relating to sapient critter physiology and the possibility of implanting it with cyberware. It is a hope she holds to.
15. What do you think of ordinary life and those who live it?
Pleasant work if you can get it, but it's not for her. It's not interesting enough, not fast enough, and not "intense" enough. She likes the bright vibrancy of the world and wants to live in the exciting world of the runners.
16. What would be a bad nightmare for you? Any deep-rooted fears? Why is it so frightening to you?
Most creatures have a fear of dying because they don't know what happens to them after they pass on. For Korrie, the fear is even more deep seated because *something* does happen to her kind when they die - they vanish. If it is her time then it is her time, but she's heard stories of hackers who have "died" but then managed to be resuscitated by their companions. What happens she thinks in her deepest nightmares if someone is coming to help her and she vanishes before they get there?
17. What is your "sacred object" or "close one" and how did they become so important to you?
Two objects compete for being sacred to her. The first is her modified commlink. Due to its size, it looks on her like a deck from the 2050s. This fits for her since she idolizes them so much, and she treats it similarly to a beloved journal - it is highly decorated, but also functional. It's packed with as many modifications as she could make, and it is also heavily armored. Additionally, she has a slip of paper which has the names Pixel and Argent on it which was the source of inspiration for her trip across the ocean.
18. What did you want to become as a child, and what are your goals now?
As a child and fairly early, Korrie wanted to become a hacker. Her goals are still the same, and she wants to become one of the best that there is. She fantasizes sometimes about receiving a personal invitation to Jackpoint, or some other mark of her "status" amongst the community of hackers across the world. Then, perhaps, she has considered revealing herself as a pixie.
19. What does your character look like, and what inspired her choices?
She wears an old army jacket that is for her the size and comparative covering of a lined coat or duster. She wears jeans and t-shirts that she makes for herself by having a plain t-shirt and cutting logos out of others to stick on. Very few tailors craft "shadowrunner-chic-for-children" so she has to improvise. She wears boots, and carries a backpack that is used to help conceal her wings. Her hair is electric blue and worn in (perhaps appropriately) a pixie cut. She likes to grin sometimes when she walks around in public, as people have a double take in reaction to her profile. "What kind of parents…" and all those other thoughts she can nearly imagine in their heads.
20. How did you get your street name?
Her street name (or more accurately Matrix handle) is Faetalist, and it is one that she created herself. She likes the balance of it containing a term for "follower of fate" plus the term fae, which of course relates to her kind.
Further, my IC post was edited and DocWagon removed. Things I still have to put in are Knowledge Skills and something for that 5k from DocWagon
