Cool. I've raised Infiltration to 5. I'm going to take a specialization and save the rest for Initiation. I'm leaning toward Maglocks for Hardware, but first, I want to ask. Is Dodge a valid specialization for Gymnastics?

While I'm at it, I probably should address some other questions I keep forgetting to ask.

From what I understand, there's been some debate about this. Does the Two Weapon Style apply to fists? If not, I'd like to switch it out for Watchful Guard. I have no intention of giving Mordred any other close combat skills.

OGDWD has been gone for a while. If either of the ongoing plots resolves or a team ends up around Seattle, I'd like to get LeFey back into the game. Maybe with a slightly different build.

Sorry I missed this one...

Tumbling is a gymnsatics specialisation that I allow to be used for dodging.

I don't think by RAW that 2 weapons applies to fists (don't ask me why not?!?) but we need a better rules lawyer than myself for that one - I suggest searching the main forum for the answer.

You could bring LeFey into the Tribes sub thread if you like? She could be affiliated if you don't want her to be one of the tribe members. Feel free to tweak her stats if you want and I'll move her sheet out of the 'absent' PCs if you want to get her going again...

Edited character post to add tribe membership contact per the Recruitment thread. Aria, you had mentioned that the timeframe of this sub-thread was going to be September. Any more specific than that, so I can put up a post in the IC thread? Or am I getting ahead of myself?

Ok, then. I'll take Tumbling and Watchful Guard.

I'll post LeFey's character sheet later. And yeah, I'd prefer that she be affiliated. Maybe I'll a new background, too.

If they do, and Sprogget finds out, he is going to be wangling for VR visiting rights! Just to feel the resonance. For most things, that gives the same bonus as "In Tune", but when away from home, bouncing in there to compile a sprite sounds so good! Maybe for submersion too?
Good job the tribes are friendly isn’t it? smile.gif
Friendly, right ... I wonder if there is a young fem TM over there that wants to come visit. It may not be quite the same, but my In Tune workspace means you do not need to be full VR to get the benefits. Note Sproggets listed age smile.gif At least he has wheels for transportation, although fitting 2 onto [into] an enclosed monocycle is going to be serious 'cozy'. facelick.gif

The question was not about spending karma after instruction tests. It was about using the tutor sprite with skillsoft and proficiency power to assist in a specific task. Say Sprogget has 1 point of Demolitions skill and wants to use a tutor sprite to do a better job of blowing a hole in a wall without taking everything down.
Let’s look it up if the situation arises. We try and stick to RAW as much as possible so no doubt there’s a reading of that, but it sounds reasonable to me…
Another one to put out in the forum about rules then. I posted it initially because RAW does not seem to cover the scenario. Proficiency sprite power
QUOTE
"Tutor sprites possess skillsofts that grant them an understanding of one or more Technical, Vehicle, or Knowledge skills, chosen upon compiling. While it can teach these skills to any person, like an instructor or interactive tutorsoft, it can also use this skill to assist a person in AR or VR as some kind of virtual assistant, with a proficiency power similar to a medkit’s autodoc program or an autosoft for humans. When the sprite guides a user through a complex task (not necessarily only the technomancer) who does not possess the skill in question, the character may perform the skill test without any modifiers, counting half the sprite’s rating (round up) as the level of the skill. Since the sprite acts as a kind of smart tutorial and teacher, assisting someone in this manner is usually more time-consuming than the normal test would be, and therefore requires an Extended or Complex Action depending on the situation (gamemaster’s call)."
That covers using the sprite without the matching skill. It does not seem to cover boosting an existing skill.

Mentioned in another post that I have been doing some playing with adding content to goggle earth. Turns out trivial to take that content and add it to the goggle map. Just need to export each object as kml, then import it to the map. I had to manually break the Puyallup border though, because the shape I had it in 'auto selected' every time I clicked inside it.
Glad you understand all that lol
IRL I have a background in computer programming, including web sites and some GIS (Geographic Information Systems = map plus database). You've seen my previous posts here. Can you say OCD to the MAX biggrin.gif

I moved the existing crime mall marker from 136ave at 122st to 136st at 122ave.
Doh, ah well, I’m not an American if that’s any excuse?
Neither am I actually, although closer than you smile.gif I have noticed that the posting time stamps show up in local time. Makes things a little strange when quoting, since the time displayed for the quoted content is the quoted post time converted to local time for the person doing the quoting. Time traveling posts smile.gif From that, I deduce that you (Aria) are 7 timezones west of me. I'm UTC-7 (Mountain time, Canada), which should put you in UTC+10. That provides a few options. Getting out the crystal ball, I am going to guess east coast of Australia. See how simple electronic tracking and profiling can be? Assuming I did the math right. :evil grin

Also, would you like to provide a bit of a color key, to help with consistency?
That would be a good idea, it’s starting to fill up…I’ll have a go at rationalising it if I get a chance.
How about:
Key Locations/Groups: Cyan+black dot
Key Locations/Individuals: Cyan
Run Targets: Red+black dot
Encounters: Red
Runner Pads: Blue+black dot
Contacts Locations: Blue
Here are some thoughts on the map content.

The symbology used on the map can include symbols, lines, shapes. Lines have a color, thickness, and opacity [how see thru]. Shapes are like lines, but also have a fill color and fill opacity [that can be different then the border line]. Google maps comes with a default set of icons, but more can be used if someone wants to take the time to locate or create them. Here are some ideas to extend the key information. Symbols are fixed colors, but line and shape colors can be selected from a larger pallet.
CODE
.....Icon.... .........Line.......... ......Fill......
Symbol Purpose Symbol Color Width Color Opacity Color Opacity | Example
District Boundary line 5 R8C5(Blue) 40 | boundary between Puyallup and Tacoma
Barrens Boundary line 3 R2C3(Red) 40 | Puyallup Barrens, where not same as Puyallup District
SR4 Area shape 3 R1C7(Black) 25 R10C3 40 | Petrosky Farms, ACHE
S2072 Establishment dotted cyan | Loveland Sleep & Bump
NS2060 Establishment dotted yellow | Nothing seems unique
SS2050 Establishment dotted purple | The Retirement
DS-411 Establishment dotted violet | Crazy Joe's
Area of Interest line 5 R3C3(Orange) 40 | wi-fi range, gang turf
Area of Interest shape 3 R1C7(Black) 25 R3C3(Orange) 40 | Specific Gang turf, Hells's Kitchen
Campaign Infrastructure shape 3 R1C7(Black) 25 R7C2(Cyan) 40 | Fre∑dom mall
Business Contact balloon blue | Owner of fixed location establishment
Mobile Contact sailboat blue | No known home address, but regular 'haunts' to meet
Matrix Contact envelope orange | an AI, or someone contacted only via the matrix
Runner Pads person grey | Home Sweet bunker
Single Run Targets house yellow | Where the Johnson or legwork points the PCs
Single Run Encounters pin yellow | Campaign or random
Notes:
  • Given the way selection seems to work in Google maps, larger boundaries should be lines instead of areas. That means no area fill though, so its a trade-off
  • Some contacts will not have a known home location. Street people move around a lot. May need to use a 'center of probability' location. That is what the mobile contact is for. For Matrix only contacts, put [near] somewhere convenient that has a solid matrix connection, and the symbol shows that it is a 'virtual' location
  • I have extended the 'Key Locations' keys based on the information source. Just in case details exist to be looked up. Initial variations here based on information from 4-1-1: Seattle 2072, New Seattle, The Seattle Sourcebook, and Dumpshock itself. Seven different colors available for the dotted bubbles should give room for quite a lot. Combine with area of interest as needed. Some exist in multiple references. Could place multiple icons, or just the oldest one. A quick scan on dumpshock looks like older references mostly carry forward to new books.
  • If have a way to additionally categorize the information [corps, gangs, tribes?] infrastructure and interest coloring could be expanded.
  • I 'switched' run specific information to yellow instead of red. Caution flag, but opportunities too, instead of red for danger. I like to use red for stop / danger / 'known hazards'. Which is what I used for the Barrens boundaries.
  • Opacity is typically set low, to still be able to see what is 'underneath'. For some things, like the Aztechnology pyramid that have no analogue from current day, it is reasonable to set opacity to 100% (unless other map features need to show through, like ACHE and Ork underground)
  • Ork Underground is an SR4 Area, but GM could extend it locally for runs, with as little or as much detail as desired, as a general location area of interest, or as Campaign Infrastructure
  • Additional symbols could be added for additional information. I was thinking the green 'washrooms' icon for meta friendly. Could use something else where only specific metatypes are welcome. The food, drink, bed icons are easy extras. Maybe the green building with flag for private meeting spaces? Yellow happy/sad face mask for nightspot/club.
  • Wi-fi range map from dumpshock 4-1-1
  • Reminder from RAW: being inside one of the matrix circles from the dumpshock map is not enough to get wireless access. Your commlink needs to be within *its* signal range of a device that has a matrix connection, and that device needs to be within the devices signal range of your commlink. If your commlink has a high signal, then the circles are pretty much where you will have reliable access. If the commlink signal rating is less than the signal range of the matrix infrastructure, you are limited by the signal range of the commlink. That is not the same as 'no signal'. You still have signal, if someone else in your commlink signal range has enough range to get a signal. In high population density areas, you get solid matrix access with low signal, because the connections jump from commlink to commlink [unless hidden mode], until they get to a 'real' matrix connection.
  • All of the symbology can be changed after items have been placed, so until major amounts have accumulated, it is fairy easy to adjust
  • Did I mention OCD?
I have not seen any way to use 'layers' with Google maps, otherwise some of this would be simpler, by putting appropriate parts on 'civic' and 'infrastructure' layers, to keep them separate, and hide them easily when not needed. Google Earth has that, but sharing is not as simple.

Oh Goody biggrin.gif a few more points to put into contacts (at least).

In prep for first IC posts, some timeline information would help.
  • How long have the Mechanicals been at their current location? A long time...they've been tinkering around here for 10+ years, so long it no longer really matters
  • How long has Fre∑dom ∑ been at their new location? Here since April '72, they moved from Redmond where they were hunted for their TMs
  • As mentioned in a recent OoC post, what will be the date for the first Emerging: Tribes IC posts? Let's say 1st September, there's no specific reason why it should be a particular date so that one will do smile.gif
  • Your group information for the Mechanicals shows 0 matrix resources. Does that mean that they do not have web site / facebook page where members can send information to each other, about scrounging finds or wants? They have some matrix resources (most people do) just not enough to warrant a contact point!
  • Could the group piggyback on Fre∑dom's resources for that? Yes, the tribes are working amicably together
Got some characters over in OoC, so I'll move other Emerging: Tribes comments and questions over there.

My character will be up sometime this week, the plan was to have it up Monday like i posted, but I ran into some computer issue's frown.gif and Charter has been doing some work on the cable lines where live so they've been down most of all day.

Noticed that you mentioned the Fre∑dom Tribe live in one building, so is that going to be a "free" lifestyle or did you want it broken down a specific way on our characters. They live in the mall but as has been previously discussed for the Mechanicals your monthly rental cost represents how you have personalised your own little piece of the puzzle.

Here's my character for Circles of Power. It's just a re-post from the CoP recruitment thread. If we're starting this one up I'll leave off for a bit on the Tribes game and see how this goes.

As I said originally I've left loads of Contacts points unspent that I thought could be useful for you to use for developing in-game contacts I may have? I didn't really know how to spend them without knowing more about how the game is going to play. If you want me to use them all I can waste them on any number of things but I thought it might be fun to spend them as I went along.

I would say "scavenger" is a more appropriate description of Scrapheap than "tinkerer". Dude can't build anything without detailed instructions (and with LOG 2, he'd probably need assistance if they aren't Ikea instructions wink.gif ), but if you need the parts he's the one to task with finding them.

Anywhoo, working on an IC post now.

With your comment about differentiating, I'll see about tweak that in a bit.

A table would be good for this data, but have not been able to make it work in the forum.

I have updated Sprogget character information. Added a new group contact, to replace the tribal one that became free. There are 'better' contacts for shadowrunning, but this one just fits too well to the background story. Sprogget is just going to have to develop more contacts 'in game'. Also major extension to the background information, and changed the formatting to use only a couple of bigger spoiler tags. The dice pools shown are not correct yet. They do not account for PC and lifestyle qualities.

Now to fill in some family names before actually NEED them, and get a introductory post going.

Key information for the SR4 2072 Seattle Map, both to help interpret what you see there, and when adding new content. There is a visual key on the map as well, over Mt. Rainier. The linked map is publicly editable, but to make any changes you will need to be logged in to a Google account.

Mobile Contact sailboat blue | No known home address, but regular 'haunts' to meet
Matrix Contact envelope orange | an AI, or someone contacted only via the matrix
Runner Pads person grey | Home Sweet bunker
Notes:
  • Given the way selection seems to work in Google maps, larger boundaries should be lines instead of areas. That means no area fill though, so its a trade-off
  • Some contacts will not have a known home location. Street people move around a lot. Or a 'flat-foot' that can only be meet on his 'beat'. May need to use a 'center of probability' location. That is what the mobile contact is for. For Matrix only contacts, put [near] somewhere convenient near the associated character home, and the symbol shows that it is a 'virtual' location.
  • I have extended the 'Key Locations' keys based on the information source. Just in case details exist to be looked up. Variations here based on information from 4-1-1: Seattle 2072, New Seattle, The Seattle Sourcebook, and Dumpshock itself. Seven different colors available for the dotted bubbles should give room for quite a lot. Combine with area of interest as needed. Some exist in multiple references. Could place multiple icons, or just the oldest one. A quick scan on dumpshock looks like older references mostly carry forward to new books.
  • If reasonable categorization groups can be specified, [corps, gangs, tribes?] infrastructure and interest coloring could be expanded.
  • Where extra information is available, include in the text description for the map marker. For example, a 'border' could be marked with the known security
  • All of the symbology can be changed after items have been placed, so until major amounts have accumulated, it is fairy easy to adjust (with a messy final step).

LeFay is linked again in Post 2

As an aside, I've given an aprox description of each character in that thread after their street name but feel free to let me know if you want a more suitable one there, I haven't differentiated much between the various tribes lot yet so you might have a more pithy descriptor for me?

Thanks. I've added some new info on her contacts, and I'll be updating the profile as time allows.

As for the description...

Disillusioned corp kid? Matrix witch? I can think of a few, but what you have is just fine.

I've made a small edit to my character before we start.

I got rid of the Trustworthy quality and took Linguist instead, swapped some language points around, and used the spare 15 points to buy 2 more contacts.

@Aria:
Assuming Copperhead's magic attribute is still 3 at the moment and that BG count is 1.

Overcasting F4 stunbolt at Mouthy:
Magic 3 + Spellcasting 3 - combat 1 = 5d6.hits(5)=2 - oops, magic is only 2 but still 2 hits even losing last die. Might slow him down a little.

Drain (F/2)-1 = 1P:
Charisma 4 + Willpower 5 = 9d6.hits(5)=2 - no drain

I would have been better off just shooting the fragger!

I've left the timestamp blank as I didn't know what we were going with, but I'll edit that with whatever you like

Great. IC is coming thick and fast so I'll try and deal with it in order, apologies to anyone that doesn't get covered by the weekend but I'll do my best before that. Timestamp I'll have a think about once I've consulted my master timeline ork.gif

@Aria, Updated map key information, as a new post. More colors added for SR4, GM, and PC sourced content. You may want to either link to this from info posts, or duplicate it, if you want to maintain it yourself going forward.

It might be a good idea to have a visual key on the map itself - perhaps just off to the east or west where we are unlikely to need to put place markers. That way anyone looking at the map doesn't need this thread to understand it (and we don't have to hunt back for your table).

There's bonus karma in it for you if you want to take on the challenge? biggrin.gif

When you eventually change the date/time stamp can you change the city the party is in to Oxford please? It's a society ball being held in the penthouse of the NeoNet tower in East Oxford. I'll try and update the UK 2072 map at some point with my views of Oxford in the future.

@Aria,

I noticed a typo in the post 2 information: from the character sheet that should be LeFey, not LeFay.

For Sprogget, I changed the language 'Iroquois' to 'Seneca' after a search for Iroquios names found a reference that says Iroquois 'Nations' speak one of 6 related but unique languages. Also expanded the background details some more.

Idea for campaign: While having a look TM Networks information, I noticed "The Cooperative" UW144. Looks like they could have an interest in what happened to Fre∑dom.

KivaNet looks more interesting to Sprogget. Wonder if he can qualify on their Strictures: NAN citizens? I have him as Iroquois ancestry, but whole family SINless, so what is classed as 'citizen' and NAN while living in Seattle. Assuming he can 'find' them, would have to figure out what attendance and service mean here.

I noticed that the way the lifestyle has been structured and described, it is going to be easy to improve during RP. Sprogget is going to want to keep the actual space, but the parents could get tired of the problems with the AI, and move to a different unit. There are a core set of qualities that just make sense living in tribal space, but many of the others can easily change as Sprogett starts getting outside income, and does various renovations.

Fun with negative lifestyle qualities: AI in Residence : deal with constant annoyances : if attempt to eliminate through 'force', escape and return.
- Sprogget gets to 'deal' with the AI, 'sweet talking' it into resetting things when it is being most annoying.
- AI named "Mister Cookie Monster" by Osha (Sprogget's Sister) :
-- for the humor impaired, multiple puns :
--- MCM movies, entertaining, but not always what you want to see
--- Cookie Monster : sesame street grouch
--- Cookie : computer context, see also Courier Sprite power
--- Cookie : even older computer context, where a hacked program would require a 'cookie' before allowing use. Added as a joke to custom programs. An early form of malware.

What is the general 'moral' stance of the Mechanicals tribe around appropriate attack / defense methods? I am thinking that some of the materials used for farming / gardening could be turned into chemical toxins. I created a customized drone to be used in the greenhouses, and had a thought about using the built in sprayer as a weapon / toxin delivery system. How 'deadly' would the tribe be willing to go? With the farming plus technical focus of the tribe, I expect someone has Chemistry skill to mix something up. If not, Sprogget has a tutor sprite that can have a Chemistry skillsoft. The drone I customized is intended as tribal property. Sprogget was just doing maintenance on it, and remembering some of its history.

Quick but customizable resource calendar, to use for visual reference
full year 2072 http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=2072&country=1
September 2072 http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/monthl...9&country=1
Sept 1 is Thursday.

The crime mall information http://redjack.dumpshock.com/?p=2&p2=5 says "The Mall is not open every night, but rather only a number of nights per month to reduce Lone Star's ability to effectively execute operations." Want to post a bit of schedule, about when it will be open in the near future? I guess that Lone Star reference is now KE.

Would a public IC post about some of the 'features' of the Mechanicals turf [lifestyle] be a good idea. Could be done as Tourist Info, Welcome Wagon, Realtor report, View from a resident, or Jackpoint report with comments [fun but take awhile to get all he pieces lined up]

Initial Sprogget IC post up. Given the other starting posts I see so far, Sprogget is going to be way 'quieter'. No scars or nightmares (dreams yes); no special physical abilities. He does his best work at home, in the shop. Quite *willing* to be out and about, but aware of his current limitations, so tries hard to avoid 'encounters'. His current 'uniqueness' for RP options, is the combination of lifestyle qualities.

Ok. I've added LeFey's background, and her profile is now complete.

Yes I take bribes smile.gif

Key information added to the east of Puyallup at Mt. Rainier. Can be moved around, but not easily. Not wanting to move it around, just to see what it look like. If going to move or resize it, want to be reasonably sure to only do it once.

While adding that, I discovered various limitations / features of "MyMaps" in Google Maps. Good news bad news stuff.
[ Spoiler ]

I did a bunch of edits to existing content, to bring it closer to the key. A bunch of those edits are going to be wrong, because I do not know the context, and no details have typically been added to the marker text to give me a hint. It is quite easy to make changes by just clicking markers in the side bar. That jumps the map around without needing to zoom out, search, zoom in. Walking the list in sequence also makes it easy to catch all the markers, without missing something that happened to be off of your map view.

Let's try for 'above and beyond, and try for some 'extra' bonus karma.
Here is a link to your editable 2072 map. Go there and click on "Aztechnology Pyramid", either the shape, or the marker entry on the 'sidebar'. Click the "View only single page map" link (or use browser specific options to open in a new page or new tab). Click the "Sprogget" icon at the Mechanicals Mall location. Click Character Sheet. Bonus functionality smile.gif Click the Mechanicals Icon or map shape (or sidebar equivalents). Link to the Emerging: Tribes Useful Info post.

Messy map update process
[ Spoiler ]

Now anyone opening the initial map page, can jump to the latest saved full single page view by clicking the "Aztechnology Pyramid", either on the map itself, or in markers list (on the left side with my browser configuration), then clicking the "View only single page map" link. Initially, I had that link in the "key" for SR4 Locations, but that key shape is on the second page. The Pyramid is on the first, and near the top of the markers list. Easier to use. That key shape does still contains a link to the posting containing the key description details. That posting has been tweaked slightly, to fix typos, adjust for changes while building the key on the map, and add the above messy update information.

To my mind they have a slightly more moral stance than the average gang, being a tribe is what sets them apart and they function in similar ways to normal society. That said, 'defend your own' is clearly a driving factor as they live in the barrens! Violence is a way of life here and they are no different or they'd have gone under long ago. So assume their moral code is mostly extended to their own members and outsiders are tolerated until they prove to be hostile rather than 'shoot on sight'

Yeah, that was the warning. If you want new or changed content to show up on the view only map, you have to do the messy recreate / update of that link in AzT. The link goes to a snapshot of what the map content looked like when the link was created. Of course that does give the opportunity to 'batch' updates together. You can do a bunch of changes and they will not be visible [in the full map], until you do that final update step. Sort of like doing multiple edits on a post, then doing the submit. I have some more map stuff to do too. Need to get a couple of contact entries in place, and maybe some more district boundaries. When I update the link, it will pick up your changes too.

Probably no use here, but the 'snapshot' view only would give some ability to show progression. Save that link at various stages, then sequence through them. Stop frame animation smile.gif Doing that could for example show the 'move' of Fre∑dom from the original location to the new, instead of having old and new markers both on the map. Speaking of which, adding timestamp info to the marker text could be useful.

I also need to edit that initial IC post. Forgot to add the color tagging.
Machine Ghost
@Aira, I think I must be mixing memory from some other context. I thought there were posting conventions here to show internal thoughts, speech, general remembrances, comm calls, and maybe more. All I found on search though was:
  • [Time/location stamp] in bold and orange
  • “speech” (cyan optional)
  • <<comms>> (yellow optional)
  • first time your character’s name or key NPCs are mentioned in a post in bold
Were there any other general conventions? If that is all, then talking to a spirit/sprite would be normal speech, and responses the same. I have used the convention that text message (separate from a voice/video/trideo call) uses a mono-spaced font (Courier New).
Things that I think (often) deserve visual distinction are:
  • comms 'channel' [speech, [voice] comm call, text messaging / instant message, tac-net / private electronic channel, internal [verbalized] thoughts, remembrances, telepathic [sprite/spirit]
  • source [PC, NPC / spirit / sprite]
with general scene description and actions as the base default

I edited the initial E:T Sprogget post, effectively duplicating it at the end. Just to play with a bit of styling. Thoughts? The indented sections were intended for 'side streams' while remembering, where following one thought would jump to another then back. To try to keep somewhat in character, while filling in background context information. @self: for conscious / verbalize internal thoughts, and @remember for the stream of consciousness flow that goes with the thoughts.

I can see trying to fully style the various situations to be a major effort. But some 'context tagging' might be useful.

Having trouble coming up with some good example tribe names to fill in the gaps. Everything I come up with is closer to a policlub or guild, like Humanis, Green Peace, Save the Seals, Mothers Against ..., than a tribe.

JackPoint Report: Seattle Culture

Tribes

Tribes, groups of people banding together behind a common meme, are a common occurrence in modern society. A tribe can range from a half dozen kids staking out the basement of an abandoned building to 'honour' their favourite trideo-star, like the "Satellites of Venus",
[ Spoiler ]
to a worldwide organization with thousands of members, and resources to rival a mid-sized corporation. Tribes can have widely varying monetary, technological, magical, matrix, personnel, political, and other resources available to them.

Even saying that a tribe is a group of people is too limiting. With the public acknowledgment that technomancers, and other matrix denizens exist, there are tribes that have AI's and Free sprites as members, as well as other sentients.
[ Spoiler ]
The only consistent commonality for all tribes, is that it has some central theme or concept to act as a focus. That focus can be quite general, or very specific, common or quite esoteric.

Tribes can be extremely insular, with any non-tribe member automatically being an enemy, or a resource to be ruthlessly exploited. They can also be very open and inviting, actively recruiting anyone they can get to listen.
[ Spoiler ]

Urban Tribes

A group that gets classed as an urban tribe is typically limited in scope to a single sprawl. There are exceptions. <need reference to multi-sprawl 'urban' tribe>
[ Spoiler ]

Seattle chamber of commerce information

The Mechanicals urban tribe is a group that works out of the Puyallup district. Their main operation is based less than 5 km south of Puyallup City on intercity 161.
[ Spoiler ]
The group performs salvage and recycles technical equipment. They have significant technical skill, refurbishing castoffs, exchanging the results with other groups for resources they do not have themselves.
[ Spoiler ]
The material is collected mostly from the E zones of Puyallup and neighbouring districts, with some from Z zones.
[ Spoiler ]
The operation is effectively a small scale cooperative business operation, leveraging their technical skills to turn end of life equipment into a reasonably comfortable lifestyle.
[ Spoiler ]

Mechanicals Inner Workings: posted by 2XL

The Mechanicals are a socially fairly close knit community of technically oriented individualists. They respect technical skill and expect loyalty to the tribe. As a group, they are not particularly aggressive or expansionist, but they ARE extremely protective of their people and facilities. [Full] members are expected to contribute to the general defence and upkeep of the community. Depending on the skill mix, that could be as simple as occasional security patrols, carrying a squealer or lending a hand with physical renovations or planning. They use peer pressure to keep the worst non-conformists in line.
[ Spoiler ]
So far, as the tribe has grown, they have expanded peacefully one unit and building at a time, convincing any extant residents to relocate.
[ Spoiler ]
Most members are going to have some sort of technical (electronics, mechanical, armorer and more) skills that directly benefit the tribe.
[ Spoiler ]
Membership is by invitation only.
[ Spoiler ]
Their output is not all ‘pure’ tech either. That CoC ‘business’ report left out the rooftop gardens and greenhouses they maintain. They could be nearly self-sufficient, if they were not using some of the produce as exchange goods.
[ Spoiler ]
They also have a bent for some retro technology styles, some of which shows up in the goods at the Crime Mall.
[ Spoiler ]
They present a strong defensive stance to the rest of the world. With the area they control, and limited population to draw from, they do not have the internal resources for full 24x7 armed patrols. They do not have the straight cred to hire a reputable security firm, and are reluctant to rely on outsiders anyway. They do, to a limited extent, use local gangs for street patrols.
[ Spoiler ]
They compensate with some ingenuity. They deliberately and randomly change up their security patrols and other security procedures, making any planned infiltration attempt complex.
[ Spoiler ]
With the community attitude, bribery is a high risk route in. The guards are protecting their home, friends, family, and more important for some of them, the equipment they use. Even the gangers that do some of the ‘protection’ are reluctant to look the other way. They know there would be consequences in access to the fresh food and tech, if they got caught.
Machine Ghost
@Aria, What discount for 'used' would you allow for a working used vehicle (or other equipment). I have a memory only reference that says 'selling' used is typically at 50% of list [+ negotiation]. Now what about for a vehicle that is not currently running, but repairable? I am thinking something in better shape that the typical salvage the tribe does. Pure salvage would work too. I assume with longer repair time, and more parts needed. If in the range for what Sprogget get his hands on in the next post or 2, need to make a trip to evaluate the pickup previously mentioned. Been sitting in a garage, not running for awhile.

As long as it's legible I've no problem with any posting convention you want to use. The minimal one I suggested at the beginning is just that, a bare minimum, and one I tend to stick to myself as I forget the other colour codes. nyahnyah.gif

Assuming success on that, he can put a call out to help him get it home: Borrow a 'flatdeck' trailer and vehicle to pull it with from tribal resources, plus some assistance and cover for the trip there and back with the truck and trailer.

Vehicles are probably ok up to 50% base cost for a (semi)working one...obviously milspec drones might be a tad more! One that's more broken down - you pick the cost reduction and let me know, the higher it is the harder it will be for you to fix / source the parts you need etc. Your posting suggestions for getting it home sound good to me smile.gif

Thanks for doing the research on those quesitons - the forum tends to be a much better rules lawyer than I will ever be!

Done a quick update to some of the Freedom info in the useful facts post. I'm looking over Machine Ghost's Tribes post now to add some details but if anyone else wants to chip in there's bonus karma in it (even if you aren't taking part in the Tribes thread feel free to contribute!).

I like the sound of this. Perhaps we ought to compile it in the OoC thread so that anyone can contribute 'shadowtalk' and then post it up as a single post. Anyone that contributes will get corresponding bonus karma to make it worth their while smile.gif
Here is a start for this.

This is the first in [hopefully] a series of posts, to create a JackPoint style 'report' on Seattle urban tribes, starting with Mechanicals and Fre∑dom. Contribution encouraged [and rewarded]. Additional 'report' content welcome, as are 'personalty' side comments to be inserted. Even good handles to associate with the comments. I'll edit some 'in place', then create a new updated post when it seems warranted. I'll keep embedded post links to reference contribution sources for GM to use when assigning points.

Jackpoint handles scavenged from quick reference searches:
/dev/grrl, 2XL, Aufheben, Axis Mundi, Baka Dabora, Beaker, Black Mamba, Butch : doctor, Cerberus, Clockwork, Cosomo, DangerSensei, Dr. Spin, Ecotope, Ethernaut, FastJack, Fatima, Fianchetto, Glitch, Goat Foat, Green Peace, Hannibelle, Hard Exit, Haze, Icarus, Johnny No, KAM, Kat o' Nine Tales, Kay St. Irregular, Kia, Marcos, Mihoshi Oni, Mika, Monkeywrench, Mr. Bonds, Nephrine, Netcat, Picador, Pistons, Plan 9, Puck, Reality Czech, Red Anya, Rigger X, Riser, Slamm-O!, Smiling Bandit, Snopes, Sticks, Sunshine : [investigative] news report, Traveler Jones, Turbo Bunny, Winterhawk, Wyrm Watcher

This is starting to look pretty good [to me, if I say so myself cool.gif], needs something similar for Fre∑dom. I think there is more IC history for them, so someone familiar should get it started.

Few tweaks from me...oh and I've anglosized it so feel free to change the spelling back to a more American influence as appropriate (sorry, force of habit!)...

JackPoint Report: Seattle Culture
Tribes
Tribes, groups of people banding together behind a common meme, are a common occurrence in modern society. A tribe can range from a half dozen kids staking out the basement of an abandoned building to 'honour' their favourite trideo-star (<insert pompous tribe name here>), to a worldwide organized with thousands of members, and resources to rival a mid-sized corporation.

  • AI's are people too. Puck.
  • Oh, pleeeze. Clockwork.
  • New forum rule: Only real people are allowed to post. Available specimens of Hobgoblins do not fit my definition of people. Someone want to remove the time bomb? Sticks.
  • Maybe the Mechanicals can recycle him. They are into obsolete tech. Snopes.
  • Slot off. Clockwork.
  • Children. [waves admonishing finger]. Stop bating the clock. Stop making it so easy. FastJack.
The only consistent commonality for all tribes, is that it has some central theme or concept to act as a focus. That focus can be quite general, of very specific, common or quite esoteric.

Tribes can be extremely insular, with any non-tribe member automatically being an enemy, or a resource to be ruthlessly exploited. They can also be very open and inviting, actively recruiting anyone they can get to listen.
  • Too right <us against the world example> <all good neighbors example>. Traveler Jones.
Urban Tribes
A group that gets classed as an urban tribe is typically limited in scope to a single sprawl. There are exceptions. <The Stillwater 'urban' tribe for example>
  • Discount the capabilities of a group, just because it is classed as an urban tribe at your own risk. Plan 9
Seattle chamber of commerce information
The Mechanicals urban tribe is a group that works out of the Puyallup district. Their main operation is based less than 5 km south of Puyallup City on intercity 161.
  • They have converted and renovated several empty industrial buildings around 43rd ave SE. No one seems quite sure when they started. Seems to be about 2060. At the time, those building were nothing more than squatter hangouts. By 2062 though, they had a solid presence, and were successfully defending the space. Not that there was initially much pressure on them. The space they were defending was of no special interest to other groups. It was easier to go somewhere else just as good, than to contest the tribes claim to the area. That has been changing slowly. The improvements that have been made, including significant rooftop farming, have been attracting covetous eyes from other groups, including various local gangs. Sunshine.
  • Not mentioning that they are less than a km from the barrens. On 2 sides. Almost in typical commlink direct signal range. Kay St. Irregular.
  • They initially moved in as squatters, quietly displacing existing residents, then made improvements, starting with defences to discourage poaching. They have been careful to keep the ‘value’ of the improvements less than the ‘cost’ to take the space over. Riser.
  • The Mechanicals leader is a Rat Shaman. That could help account for their success in keeping their gains. Dr Spin.
  • Spindle’s a canny bastard. He’s got his totem’s desire to run and hide in the face of conflict but he wouldn’t have held on to any measure of power without an understanding of how to motivate others to do things for him. He’s a consummate politician, in the worst use of that word. Winterhawk
  • Could also be the leaked information that the whole place is mined. If someone really pushed hard enough to oust them, BLAMM! No useful resources to take over. They’d rather run than fight but they are prepared to defend what’s theirs. Glitch
  • Smarter [group] opponents will know that it takes skill to keep that operation running. They do not need to mine it. Even if the whole tribe just walked off, someone moving in would not get much benefit without the skill walking away with the tribe. Those facilities are built from a patched together jumble of mismatched equipment. It would fall apart without their TLC. It would as likely eat a stranger, as provide an liquid assets, or much in the way of ongoing benefits. They are good enough to keep out the idiots, and most of the 'smart' individuals. Cerberus
  • Which is just another way to mine it. DangerSensei
  • Yeah! Better to continue to trade for what they are willing to offer, so have something next month or year too. Reality Czech.
The group performs salvage and recycling operations of technical equipment. They have significant technical skill, refurbishing technological castoffs, exchanging the results with other groups for resources that do not have themselves.
  • Not all of their output is strictly [or even close to] legal. They also sell interesting things at the Crime Mall made from the salvage. Rigger X.
  • Try scavenged as well as salvaged. My intel says some of that is also ‘re-appropriated’, though they do seem to keep that to a minimum. Would not do to have other groups angry at them for more than existing. Reality Czech.
The material is collected mostly from the E zones of Puyallup and neighbouring districts, with some from Z zones.
  • They do a fair amount of work around the Barrens, seemingly pretty good at avoiding active attention from the gangers and such. Netcat.
The operation is effectively a small scale cooperative business operation, leveraging their technical skills to turn end of life equipment into a reasonably comfortable lifestyle.
  • Yeah, they’re good at turning gomi into usable tech. In some very creative ways. Pistons.
  • That ‘comfortable lifestyle’ is misleading. How well each member lives depends on how much effort they put into helping the tribe, and how much extra time and skill they have to upgrade the individual units. The tribe has not done full apartment renovations throughout. Only the needed facilities are totally a group effort. You can be sure that the shop space used to process the salvage is going to be up to date, but the same cannot be said of basic living units. The members will have a roof over their head, and food to eat, but beyond that, improvements are done on your own time, or based on your usefulness, productivity, and street cred within the tribe. Sunshine.
  • Yep, there are ‘fringe’ members and hangers on that are effectively squatters. Glitch.
  • Although they work extensively with technology, on a very small scale, they are mostly recovering resources that are already well past the 'use by' date. They have to be very efficient with their resources. Their whole tribe is a recycling centre. Their farming operation uses fairly high tech, but they are also trying for organic output. I'll give them a {grudging} A for effort on ecological awareness and support. EcoTope.
  • Why Grudging? Haze.
  • They do not really care about the environment. Efficiency and minimal waste are just the best way for them to get the most out of the resources. EcoTope.
  • That says a bit about them, but what are they like? Haze.
  • I was interested in how the operation worked awhile back, and did a bit of research. Here’s my take attachment. 2XL
  • Peer pressure she says. The power goes off to your pad, suddenly no extra tomatoes from the greenhouse. No one available to fix the broken SPU. Yep, that’s peer pressure. Hard Exit.
So far, as the tribe has grown, they have expanded peacefully one unit and building at a time, convincing any extant residents to relocate.
  • Since the area they are claiming is abandoned industrial, with no in place amenities that they do not provide themselves, it is usually not difficult to convince the squatters to look of another crash pad, when the new neighbours become too noisy [or nosy], applying a bit of incentive to move on. The non-tribal hangers-on are normally willing to move a bit further away, to stay in the good graces of their meal ticket, of before they become surrounded by ‘un-friends’. Some of that expansion is from hanger’s on becoming a member, expanding the territory by default. Monkeywrench.
Most members are going to have some sort of technical (electronics, mechanical, armorer and more) skills that directly benefit the tribe.
  • Family and community is important to them too. They provide decent education for the kids, and training resources to members. Those that are willing to make the effort to learn anyway. Home schooling, and a lot of virtual classroom stuff, but what isn't now? Snoops.
  • They do emphasize practical skills, not completely matching public curriculum. Just passing through their node, I noticed an upcoming seminar posted "Building a Crossbow from Common Construction materials". /dev/grrl/.
  • Passing through? They are at the south edge of Puyallup, next to the barrens. Where could you have possibly been passing through to? Slamm-O!.
  • Privileged Information. /dev/grrl/
  • You could reasonably accurately compare them to nomadic hunter/gatherer societies from centuries ago. With modern transportation capabilities, they do not need to move the 'home lodge' while gathering the salvage that is the food fuelling them. With the dross being expelled by the larger sprawl, there has been no problem with over hunting, and needing to move to a new range. Some would compare them to old style wind powered pirates with an island base. That would not be accurate. While there are cases where members would have picked up 'salvage' through questionable means, in the main they work from discarded and abandoned materials. They do the work themselves, not taking from the effort of someone else. Historian.
  • Salvaging from empty buildings is still theft. Somebody still owns it. Wyrm Watcher.
  • Pretentions of morality? Practicing for a bar exam? Marcos.
  • Maybe owned on paper. Sometimes. Given what the crash did to records, ‘who’ is often unclear. They mostly avoid places where someone with a ‘legitimate’ claim is showing continued interest. In a lot of cases, the ‘owner’ should thank them. Any future ‘official’ interest in their targets is likely to start with a wrecking ball. Mr. Bonds.
Membership is by invitation only.
  • A first cut tribal evaluation is done before the initial invite. Whoever proposes a new member will do so internally before the prospective member knows anything about it. The invite may or may not come from the member who proposed the new person. They may never know who initially proposed them. Kat o' Nine Tales.
Trial memberships may be offered to those without much in the way of directly useful skills, if someone sees enough potential for the future. There does not seem to be a simple evaluation checklist. 2XL.
Their output is not all ‘pure’ tech either. That CoC ‘business’ report left out the rooftop gardens and greenhouses they maintain. They could be nearly self-sufficient, if they were not using some of the produce as exchange goods.
  • And for ‘protection insurance’. Smiling Bandit.
That farming is pretty hi-tech. Good use of some of that salvage. Turbo Bunny.
They also have a bent for some retro technology styles, some of which shows up in the goods at the Crime Mall.
  • That’s for sure. I picked up this crazy looking holo projector from them one time. Totally ancient 2D flat screen look, with moving mechanical linkages, but when activated, holo pops up just fine. Pistons.
  • The style is called steampunk. Turbo Bunny.
  • Right, Basically ‘protection’ payments. Icarus.
  • It does help cut down on the competing protectors. The devil you know. Black Mamba.
  • Or is that keep you friends close? DangerSensei.
  • The low population density, is due to all of the shop space they use for processing the salvage, and to build the ‘toys’ found at the Crime Mall. Seems like every other member has some sort of shop. Monkeywrench.
They compensate with some ingenuity. They deliberately and randomly change up their security patrols and other security procedures, making any planned infiltration attempt complex.
  • I’ll say. Had a target suspected to be hiding on their turf one time. Did some research to see what a hard extract would take. Found out there could be fixed checkpoints, armed roving patrols, spirits, mages, roving sensor and combat drones, building sensors with spider and patrolling IC. The could be is because it keeps changing. Typically there are only a couple of items active from that at any one time due to the available resources and limited population to pull from. The roving patrol might be a couple of kids with squealers, or it could be heavily cybered combat veterans. The spirit could be a watcher, or major fire spirit with a flaming chip on its shoulder. The spider could be a kid in AR watching the cameras manually, or a professional that would qualify for work at a triple-A. The drones might be a simple repurposed garden weeder, or a heavily customized combat drone. It all depends on just when, and which particular building you are interested in. If your luck holds on the timing, null sweat, but if the lady figures your karma needs some payback, you might wish it was just a corp fire team. Turned out we did not even need to try. One of their ‘concerned citizens’ spotted the gong trying to steal from a greenhouse. They escorted him out [with bruises], leaving a beacon on him inviting any interested parties to collect the little drek. A little reminder for others. Monkeywrench.
  • The matrix resources, not part of but available, to the group have recently increased. They are on friendly terms with the Fre∑dom tribe that took over the South Hill mall just north of them earlier this year. Common Interest in tech, but not competing for resources. FastJack.

Do we need some 'legalize' about borrowing the Jackpointer's names for this?

@Aria: Some rolls for Copperhead:

Infiltration roll to avoid the VTOL:
Agi 3 + Infiltration 2 = 5d6.hits(5)=2

Throwing grenades, if required (smoke, flashpak, flashbang):
Defaulting to Agi 2 = 2d6.hits(5)=1, 2d6.hits(5)=0, 2d6.hits(5)=0 - smoke is glitch plus a hit, flashpak is a miss, flashbang would be a critical glitch, but I'll edge that down to a normal glitch.

Casting F4 death touch on ant spirit assuming it gets close enough to touch:
Spellcasting 3 + Magic 2 - Combat 1 + Edge 2 = 6d6.hitsopen(5,6)=3, base damage is 4P, all edge spent again!

Resisting drain (F/2)-2 = 1P minimum:
Charisma 4 + Willpower 5 = 9d6.hits(5)=4 - no drain at least.

Aria
You need to roll unarmed combat +2 to make a touch attack. You have +1 reach too...
Notsoevildm
@Aria:
Agi 3 + Unarmed 2 + Cyber 2 + Touch 2 + reach 1 = 10d6.hits(5)=1 - not so good and if cyberweapons doesn't count that one success was the last die! Bugger, this is gonna hurt.

Few tweaks from me...oh and I've anglosized it so feel free to change the spelling back to a more American influence as appropriate (sorry, force of habit!)...
Anglicize away as far as I am concerned. Canadian spelling usually matches British not USA. I end with US, because I sometimes have trouble getting the various spellcheckers to use the right dictionary. USA keyboard should not equal US spelling dictionary. ... Although I guess since the 'scene' is Seattle, US spelling would be appropriate here ... as modified by 50 years and some major Japanese influence. Of course each independent 'author' in the posting and comments will have their own background and preferences too. The main chamber of commerce article does have a bit of 'British professor' feel to it.

That reminds me. I have seen IC content in alternate languages, with English translation on mouse over. I know how to do that with straight html, but how is it done in the forum posts? What I came up with, is inserting a url but putting normal text in place of the usual link path. Is there another way?

I copied Aria's content, added a few more tweaks, fixed some more typos, and put the edited content back in my initial JackPoint post.

@Aria, I think this is going to come under the heading of GM discretion, not rules lawyer. Both Sprogett and the Daedalus paragon are 'tinkerers'. The Daedalus descriptions says:
QUOTE (UW150 Daedalus)
Named after the famous Greek inventor, Daedalus is the embodiment of the machine tinkerer, the master of devices and (sometimes dangerous) technical inventions. As Daedalus is the personification of the constructor and innovator, technomancers with a love of robotic machines, drones, vehicles, and electronic devices feel especially drawn to this paragon.
which implies that 'inventions' are valid, and expected.

I have some ideas for customized equipment, and want to know what is going to be allowed in game. With actual functional improvements. The Targeting(sprayer) autosoft I used in the initial post is a trivial example. It still fits in the standard RAW. Just need to determine attack rolls, if it every gets used IC. Probably similar to the light pistol range of the Ares S-III Super Squirt SR4319/321, although a sprayer could have a larger ammo capacity, and could do something similar to autofire and wide burst.

Getting more 'inventive', I have an idea for customizing the Doble Revolution Enclosed Monocycle AR108 that Sprogett already has. If I have a good 'story', for the modifications, can they be made real IC? This could entail over modification AR129 of devices, so may need to adjust other specs to allow it. Initial proposal will not over modify, unless it gets ruled as needing more than 3 slots. For now, I am going to assume that this sometimes works. I'll post the design thoughts IC, along with some build rolls OoC. GM will need to determine if the change is feasible, the threshold, interval for the build, modification slot requirements, and how much of the intended improvement is actually realized. If it does not work, parts used will be removed, returning equipment to it's previous state. I'll also assume that equipment is available in its initial state during the build/modify process, only needing it in shop temporarily for measurements and tests (in case of longer intervals). At least up until ready to do field tests. That last step would be a relatively simple install, with all parts available, and needed steps known from the extended build rolls. Any needed mount points prepared earlier. If the interval and threshold turn out to be long/high for practical IC work, the project may get abandoned as not practical.

If the idea looks good, but you do not want to deal with 'clones', you could include the paragon negative of -2 dice for any others to use the modified equipment. Parts of the modification are just too 'intuitive' to be easily duplicated, except maybe by another TM with the Daedalus paragon.

Some of the initial thoughts, I would like to have the design and build process done, ready to install now IC.

BTW, Morgan looks like a good teammate / hands across the border with Fre∑dom, for Sprogget. Mix the technical and social skills. Now to figure out how to meet her IC.

@Aira, Since this is 'fluff', I won't worry too much about rolls, but figured this is a good chance to check some dice pools

In Sprogget's Shop, doing remote repairs.
Compile Machine sprite: Compile(2)+RES(4)+In Tune(2)+Daedalus(1) Machine Sprite(3) with Linguisoft(Senca) = 9d6.hits(5) -> [5,5,5,6,5,6,6,1,1] = (7) vs 3d6.hits(5) -> [6,5,5] = (3)
High dice, 4 tasks, but this could hurt. Noticed I could have done the rolls together.
Resist Fading(6): INT(4)+RES(4)+In Tune(2) = 10d6.hits(5) -> [5,3,4,5,5,5,2,2,2,4] = (4)
2 stun damage
task 1: Stability power

Want a dice roll for any of the shopping? The Shop is availability 8. Rolling on his own, Sprogget gets Negotiation(1)+CHA(4), but I think for equipment like that, the Tribe has a reasonable chance of either already having it, or having most, and needing a bit of scrounge for the rest.

AR160 workshop/facilities shows that setting up a shop needs at least medium necessities. The workplace lifestyle quality AR162 says in increases the space aspect of necessities by 2 levels. Base necessities is medium, so with the workplace quality, space gets boosted to luxury. Given the jumps shown in the necessities description, I'm going to assume I have LOTS of space. Enough for half a dozen shops, without crowding. A Facility now ...

Task 2: Diagnostics Power, Teamwork Test 6d6.hits(5) -> [1,1,3,4,2,1] = (0)
How about that, a critical glitch, but downgraded to a glitch due to the Stability power. No extra dice on the repair test. Just for fluff, will say this is an easy fix SR4A140, with no situation or tools modifiers, but with AR enhanced reference material, and a 30 minute interval.
Hardware(2)+LOG(4)+Daedalus(2)+Feng Shui(3)+ARRef(2) = 13d6.hits(5) -> [3,4,5,5,5,4,1,1,2,5,4,6,6] = (6)
done in first interval.

I wanted to do some posts for the day job and lifestyle qualities, to provide some 'feel' for the environment. I'll start condensing those, at least when I have 'campaign' stuff to do. Unless you want more detailed postings like these?
