I am new to this system. Can you please explain in game terms what happened? I had two successes out of 10. Yokinko was trying to get more to complete the trace. He should need 8 more. Did he report that his task was finished? Jamie should know what actions could result in this effect. Galen does not.
Galen
Well I'm going by all the police films I've ever seen...tracing a comm call requires you to have a connection long enough to get a fix (10 successes with a -ve pool equal to their stealth program which is none in this case). The trace program is designed for icons rather than comm calls as far as I can tell which tend to be less permanent...someone correct me if I'm wrong?!?
QUOTE
Capture Wireless Signal (Sniffer )
You eavesdrop on wireless traffic going to and from a device. You must
be within the device’s Signal range to capture the traffic. You must succeed
in an Electronic Warfare + Sniffer (3) test to start the capture,
and then you may copy, record, or forward the traffic without another
test as long as you remain within the target device’s Signal range and
keep the Sniffer program running.
There is no way for other parties to detect your capture (without
access to your commlink, of course). If the traffic is encrypted, you
must break the encryption before it can be captured.
&
QUOTE
Trace User (Track )
You trace an icon back to its originating node. This is a Computer +
Track (10, Complex Action) Extended Test. The target may increase
the threshold with the Redirect Trace action, and a Stealth program
run by your target acts as a negative dice pool modifier.
When you reach the threshold of the Extended Test, you have
successfully traced the target, learning the target’s access ID and the
location of the device housing the originating node (usually the user’s
commlink). If the target is using a wired connection to the Matrix, you
learn his exact location. If he is using a wireless connection, you have
his location triangulated to within about 50 meters. As long as you
keep your Track program running and the target remains connected
to the Matrix, you may continue to monitor the target’s location. Black
IC can make the trace easier.
You can also use this action to trace a subscription to its other
end. For example, you may trace the subscription from a drone to the
rigger controlling it.

I think that your agent needs to keep retrying (and its -1 die per retry), until it accumulates enough successes. Or Aria can just fudge it and say "these are computer incompetents and your agent just found them".
As an aside for anyone else who wants to join Ember in the separate, just let me know and I will write you in.

It sounds like whoever was on the other end disconnected the call before the trace completed. I'm perfectly fine with that. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something else rules-wise.
EDIT I'm working up an IC post, but I won't get it done 'til tomorrow night.

Have been thinking about Doza, hope the following is ok
- Started life as a street kid in Denver.
- Joined a street gang as a way of getting a regular meal.
- Spotted by a mercenary group recruiter, seemed a good way out of the streets
- Given 2nd hand cyberware to enhance performance.
- Met Jotamon at a gun club and had a year or so dating him.
- Had a few authority problems and didn't care for 1 or 2 jobs the group took on.
- (Has her own code of what she will and won't do)
- Was part of a black ops team, supposedly bounty hunting, in Chicago. It was actually running a spoiler on another team, when things went wrong. Was left for dead as a result of 'plausible deny-ability'. Managed to get out and decided not to go back.
- Went to Seattle to lie low for a year or two until she was forgotten by previous comrades (who think her dead anyway)
- Was going to get back in touch with Joatmon when safe to do so (honest!)
- Has been running as casual muscle etc with no real team since arriving. Picking and choosing jobs that appeal.
Can I clarify what Doza's brief is regarding 'the Kid'. She has quite strong code about what she will and won't do. If he's been used as a courier, will have no problem picking him up and turning him upside down to see what falls out. However, will not cause him any real harm, or deliver him to others if I think that's likely.

@Aria
First stab at a background for Jotamon
Nothing came easy to Frank Mareno. Born as an orc, the tenth child of a member of the Marenoclan, he was always the runt. Other people seemed to more gifted, and more likable. Frank found his first life lesson: "Work hard and you can compensate for anything". He wasn't clever, and he wasn't lucky, but he knew how to apply himself to his studies, and he worked hard. The family noticed and rewarded him with his first piece of cyber/bioware cerebral boosters. The difference this made to him was incredible. A whole new world of understanding was opened. This was the start of his love affair with tech.
One problem Frank had was that he didn't really like violence. As the son of Soldato, it was expected that he would take part in the family business. And every now and then the family business involved concrete overshoes or leg breaking. Frank noticed though that he could put off joining the business if he went to college. The problem was that even with hard work, he wasn't making the grades. This is where he learnt his second life lesson "There is always another way". The college needed grades, or sporting excellence. Frank was actually very good with a pistol, and with two years of serious practice he was good enough to get a college sporting bursary. At college he learnt about people: how to talk to people, how to understand them, and get them to do what you want. He learnt about computers: how to get them to do what they are supposed to, and even better how to break through their defences. He came to the opinion that a man who understands people, and understands computers can do anything.
It was in his last year at college that he met Doza. The two got on surprisingly, and the year that he spent with her was the best in his life. Frank and Doza were making plans for how they could escape the destiny that fate had thrown them: She was a mercenary for a "leave feet first only" outfit, and he was the son of Mafiosa. Then she suddenly vanished without a message or anything. Frank assumed that she was dead. This was the start of a truely miserable year
He became a soldato for real, and his negotiation skills and computer skills counted for almost nothing. A Fortunately he was good at acting, and he could put on the act of the Soldato, but he was constantly scared that it would stop being an act, and start being who he was
After a year the Vory happened. With a slight historical bent, Frank called that the night of long knives. It was meant to be a coup de tat, a putsch. The Vory came from nowhere and in a single night half the Moreni family died under a series of coordinated strikes. Frank was visiting the Capo when it went down, and was bored at a family dinner. He had hacked the external cameras to alleviate the boredom of the Capo's birthday speech, when he saw the marks of another hacker looping cameras.
Alerting everyone, the run on the capo was defeated, although Frank was very badly wounded almost to the point of death, he personally killed two of the samurai that burst through the doors into the family meal, that were about to kill the Capo. The capo ensured that Frank lived, and there was no shortage of cyber/bioware to help repair his shattered body.
Frank now learnt his third important life lesson: "In a violent world, it is important to be able to survive, and to be able to dish it out". The ware helps a lot, but Frank has puts a lot of effort into maintaining his skills at combat, and generally keeping fit.
Frank has now proved his manhood in the eyes on the Mafia and is a Made Man. This has worked to his favour, as it means among other things that he can avoid some of the more unpleasant sides of the Mafia business. Frank mostly deals in white collar crime now. The Mafia he works with call him Jotamon: a misspelling of "Jack of All Trade, Master of None".
Frank is currently travelling around the company. He earns enough money to get by as an electrical repair man. He tells the Family it is a cover, and he is still called on for the operations, but he is much happier with a microtonic toolkit repairing a microwave for a little old lady, then he is breaking bones for the Family.

@DH/Seta: Not having seen your character post yet I’m assuming you are a push bike cycle courier but let me know if I’m wrong. I thought I’d reintroduce Scratch from your Loveland game for another bit of inter game continuity. I will probably stat her up as a 400BP character for 2072 too (probably with some modifications to the original stats as I’m always tweaking my characters
)
@Doza: Background looks fine to me but the thought of second hand cyber just makes my skin crawl
Especially something as invasive as MBW – they had to strip it out of a dead guy! But beggars can’t be choosers, and they probably only told you it was knocked off once they’d turned you back on
Your contract regarding the kid was moderately specific – collect him, keep him safe and take him to a specified location which you guess to be a safe house (the implication being he was in some kind of trouble and you would be helping him out). How they knew where he’d be is anyone’s guess of course...!
@Jotamon: It’s going to be a shock seeing Doza again! Weird coincidence heh?!?
@Jamie: You will easily breeze through the limited security on the commlink – see IC post...you just need to let me know what you want to do with the info...

Copperhead is indeed female. Her cyberware actually makes her a pretty poor shaman at the moment; consider her more like a troll ganger with perks.
One way to link her to Ember would be that she is trying to learn more about magic and either her talismonger contact or her totem led her to Ember. Ember could also have noticed the cybered lady troll that seemed to be paying more interest in his spirit than him at the 'Horny Troll' bar. Seth
Jul 15 2011, 08:48 AM
Point taken about Lone Star...that is very relevant TY.
He still said Lone Star, but that's because he is flustered and a bit old fashioned
I really meant to say Charlotte. And he has hung up (he sounded flustered and angry). When you try and reconnect he has put you on his blacklist. If you make some sort of computer roll you can work out how to bypass the black list (2 successes on logic + computer, 1 success on logic + hacking, you can default computer).
Otherwise you can hire someone with those skills, or go there: its only an hour away from where Copperhead is, although his workplace about 10 minutes from where you are. His home place is an hour away. Perhaps you could rearrange the meet with Copperhead, or do it virtually? That wasn't pressure from me: its just a pain for you to travel an hour away and then an hour back.
Computer options:
You can just find mapping software (equivalent of google maps) to show you roughly where his house is and what the terrain is
You can do a data search on his home address, or work address. (default computer skills ok. One success gets you a lot).
If you look for the mapping software you find his home address is a bulletproof condo in the Richmond highlands. He lives with the band. It's designed for keeping out paparazzi not shadowrunners.

@Jamie et al.
2072 Locations EDIT: link doesn't seem to work...can you follow my sig link to my website and checkout the links there?
Thanks to Google Maps I’ve got some additional info for you so that you can picture where you are (note I’ve made some changes to account for 60 odd years but in essence it’s the same)
NE41st street is an offshoot of NE40th street and housed Microsoft execs before that company sunk in the first crash. The condos are large and spacious, set back from the street with gardens (or what were once gardens, now dust bowls with straggled weeds)
You are at the intersection with 40th street and the kid came from between two buildings off 41st to the north. The trace reports that the Bastard and team are in the warren of cul-de-sacs to the north west of here.
Your shooter is in a 4 storey apartment building on the south side of NE40th street (all the southern side of this street is lined with low level apartments which aren’t there 2010s), about 20-30m from your position.
The jackrabbit is facing west towards downtown and therefore on the north side of the road (I had to think about this carefully, fancy driving on the wrong side of the road
)...
@Seth, do you have a location for the Horny Troll and I’ll add it to the map...anyone else want anything adding on I can see about opening this up for collaboration (don’t know if that’ll work but we’ll see...)
@JxJxA: Well I think Ember and Demon would seriously annoy each other (might be fun
) so I’m sure we could find a reason for him to hire you too! Given the French connection there’s a chance he knows you already...
Otherwise I can work you into the thread with Seth, Alyena and Galen? Or if DH get’s back to us I can work you in with him on the courier run. Let us know which you’d prefer?!?

How are we handling Initiative Passes? By my estimation, the sniper had a Surprise round to shoot our previous opposition.
Now we are actually in Initiative. I defined Jamie's actions, Seth defined Jotomon's actions, Aria defined the snipers actions. I understand we are waiting on Doza. No pressure, just trying to understand.
Aria indicated what had happened so far. Once Doza posts, do the three of us post our intended actions for IP number 2? Then the GM resolves?

Aha spot the D20 player. That game gives you cancer you know!
As I understand it (although I have to reread the rules everytime)
1: The attacker rolls surprise (with +6 die)
2: Everyone else rolls surprise (only getting +6 if you knew that the attackers were there)
3: In IP 1 unless you beat the attacker, you are surprised, although you can still do things that don't affect the attacker (for example draw weapons, put children in the car, move).
4: Then you go to IP 2, and no one is surprised.
Surprise is far more damaging in shadowrun than d20, but you "only" get one IP of surprise.
@Aria/Ember
I'll let you and Copperhead get together before posting any more IC. Tell me when you want to go somewhere.
galenbd
Jul 15 2011, 02:39 PM
Thank you for clarifying surprise. I'll include that in our next, inevitable, firefight. I've been corrupted by too much d20, I agree.
That still does not answer my base question. How are we handling communication of actions in a given IP? Is the way I described it correct? Seth has define tentative actions for the entire Combat Turn. Should we be doing it that way? What convention are we using?
Galen
Seth
Jul 15 2011, 02:41 PM
Everyone seems to use their own conventions in play by forum. I recommend mine (obviously) as reduces the time taken to process it by the GM. Occasionally I have to go back and edit the post, but mostly it seems to work well.
galenbd
Jul 15 2011, 02:57 PM
I ran a one shot d20 game to test 3 Combat Turns at once. The players defined their tentative actions for 3 turns. It meant a lot of work for the GM typing everything out once I figured everything out. It has unfortunately been deleted.
That's why I was skeptical about defining all action for the entire Combat Turn. I didn't want to overload the GM.
Galen
Aria
Jul 15 2011, 03:20 PM
I'll be the first to admit it doesn't always work but I try and make things as free flowing as possible (sometimes at the expense of initiative orders etc) so that people don't have to wait for anyone else to post.
One thing that has worked (given the ease of invisible castle for doing multiple rolls) is to get people to roll 2-3 attack rolls and 2-3 defence rolls and then I just run through them in turn as required, ignoring the rolls that aren't needed...that way you shoot someone, if they get to shoot back I can use your roll to IC the defense and don't need to wait for you to roll and the IC keeps moving.
Sometimes you change your mind and then it's easy enough to go back and edit out a section of IC
Your are all tentatively on IP2 I think...and just because you've 'spotted' one shooter, who's to say there aren't 2?

TM, so we can meet up. I suspect Jamie and myself had better introduce ourselves to each other...

Holy crap, it's been a long ass time since I've been to this neck of the woods, and imagine my surprise when I found out that this game is still alive.
Aria, you are bloody awesome. Hats off to Grimm as well, who as far as I understand also had a hand in keeping my baby going. I would apologize to my old players for dropping off the grid so suddenly, but none of them seem to be around anymore. Life's been crazy, I've had to move to a new country, and stuff still ain't settled yet. Maybe when it does I'll pop in here to GM a run or two.
Aria: with you as an operator, I'm sure that this game will go to places I've never even dreamed about when I first conceived it. I look forward to reading the stories you and your crew come up with.

Good to hear from you Unsound! Come back any time
@Jamie et al. Do you want me to escort you to the stuffer shack or do you want to go elsewhere first? Don't want to override you before you get a chance to make some decisions

I think we can get there our selves. Jamie doesn't know where it is so I hope Jotomon will suggest it at some point. Jamie's currently just trying to get the hell out of Dodge.
